Sunday--where is my transporter? #authorblogs #SundayBlogShare #BloggersBlast

Sunday Post was conceived by Kimberly at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Here we are, Sunday again, and I do hope y'all are having a good one. Life has been...well, the usual, these days. Mostly staying inside away from the heat. Reading. I'm partially done with an audiobook I've been chunking away at. I did some work on some guest posts (one up today here at Romance Lives Forever, and one Friday at vvb32Reads, if you'd like to see them.) I've also finished the next stage of revising my next book.

There are even thoughts of the next one. :)

This week saw the Summer Solstice, of course. Unfortunately, I didn't make it to Stonehenge again this year, like some of my blogging friends. Alas, that dream still remains unfulfilled (where is my transporter, damn it!)

I forget if I mentioned this here, did I tell y'all I bundled Reign of Tarot? Yes, aside from now having the nifty cool audiobook of Lady of the Tarot, now that the series (duology) is finished, I've made a box set. If you'd like to get both REIGN OF TAROT books for the price of one, you can find it at Amazon.

What else did I do this week? Well, I got a book or two.

On the fiction side:

Thief's Blade by C. Greenwood,
Changeling: An Appalachian Magic Novel Book 2 (Appalachian Magic Series) by Debbie Herbert
Nefertiti's Heart (The Artifact Hunters Book 1) by A. W. Exley

and a few non-fiction titles:  Buried Cities, Complete Pompeii, Olympia, Mycenae by Jennie Hall. It's an old one, but if you read my posts from the last week, its subject has piqued my interest.

Nothing too exciting (depending on your point of view) ;).

Also Gods of Stonehenge by J.P. Reedman

Are we sensing a theme here? I wish I had a transporter, I'd probably be here and there and all over the place, every single week.

But oh no!

Here we are in futuristic 2017 and we have no bloody transporters! Come on, science people! You've had fifty-three years to work the problem. It's time to catch up with the science fiction writers.;)

(We'll get there. According to this, we are.) I would just prefer it to, you know, flying. Of course, there is the danger that if I do go to, oh, Naples, Pompeii, Ireland, or Stonehenge, my husband might have a hell of a time getting me to come back! ;)

Anyway!

Posts from last week.
A dandy new review for House of Dark Envy that I had to post about here.
My 3 greatest strengths/weaknesses/doubts
Summer Solstice
Oh and I posted a review for my last read on my book blog for A Victorian Grimoire by Patricia Telesco.

Anyway, that's been my week. This week I've got some posts scheduled up as I'll be hunkering down doing final work on the book. Yes, that's right, the new book will be coming soon! By next Sunday, even, if all goes well.
I even have a cover to show you. *rubs hands gleefully* Stay tuned!

And, in order to link on those two sites, here's a picture (are we sick of silly pictures yet? Although, I have to admit, thus coffee cup by kaboompics.com is cute. ;)):

Have a good week, y'all!

See that little swatch of green knitting? I had hoped to knit a Brighid doll by now...ee-yeah. As you can see, it didn't work out. But My Lady is kind-hearted. She sent me a new story idea overnight. So, we're good. It's a little late, but we're still on the day, so....wishing you all Brighid's blessings this fine Imbolc! May you all have a peaceful, and productive, early spring. All Hail Brighid!

Happy Birthday, Virginia Woolf

Yes, yesterday was author Virginia Woolf's birthday. Most people know her from their school reading, or that (god awful) movie the hours. I discovered her work in college when a lit professor assigned us To The Lighthouse (right before I got into a car wreck that threw me out of school for a while. Ugh). Mainly her fictional work, but she also wrote essays, short stories, and tons of letters and diary entries.

Yes, I found her novels a little hard to wrap my head around, the flow of her narrative is not what we've come to expect. Dare I say, it takes work to understand? Her writings are definitely not for the lazy reader. And she didn't bother herself with the "rules". Remember, she was writing in the 19-teens and '20s, so, unlike the writers today, not everything is always wrapped up in a nice little bow.

And she wasn't afraid to try things no one else had. I mean, think about it? Who else do you know who takes a paragraph out of their narrative to give the point of view to a crab? The Modernists might've played around with the novel's form, but as far as I know, none of them (*coughmencough*) had the balls to do that.

But, to me, I think that's probably what makes her so cool. The fact that I have to wrap my head around her stories makes it worth it to me. One of my favorites? Well, Jacob's Room. I won't tell you why. You have to read it, and follow it all the way to the end, to find out. I wouldn't recommend a new to her reader start with Jacob's Room, though. If you've never read her before, her earlier books, The Voyage Out and Night and Day, especially, are easier reads. But her experimentation, to me, even outside the impact she made on feminism, is what I especially love her for. (It's a shame writers aren't allowed to try such bold experiments, these days...but I digress) Even today, she still inspires me to forge ahead, and try things I maybe haven't before.

So, I have to take this day just to say, once again, happy birthday, Virginia and salute her bravery as a writer and a woman. :)

A smattering of her work:

A few quotes:
“Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written large in his works.” —Virginia Woolf

“So long as you write what you wish to write, that is all that matters; and whether it matters for ages or only for hours, nobody can say. ”

“My writing now delights me solely because I love writing and don’t, honestly, care a hang what anyone says....”

Have you ever read any Virginia Woolf?

8 of the best posts from my last blogging year.

Hi folks. I hope you're having a good Monday! If you've been poking around the internet this week, you've seen a lot of blog posts titled "My goals for the year" or some such. I thought I probably shouldn't add to the pile, as I have had a lot of work to do this week.
I've been busy this week, getting some revisions done on something while waiting for final edits for another. *rubs hands* All of which should (might. I hope) see the light of day this year.
More on that soon.
So those are obviously, on my goals for the year. Instead, of making yet another list of things I "plan" to do, I thought I would share some (5) of the top posts from 2016. This was the year that I shifted back to this blog, in, what? June? So I started from there. These were the most popular in that time frame--at least according to the hit counts in my dashboard, a mix of essays, quotes, and guests. :)

Indie Advent Calendar and deleted scene from Lady of the Tarot (Shucks, y'all liked this one? Thanks!)
What blogging gets done with carpal tunnel
Every Artist....
Top Ten Books With X Setting--fantasy settings I'd love to visit.
So it starts, Summer Magic

And from my reading blog:
my review of Whimsical Tendencies by Suzanne G. Rogers (which I could've sworn I copied over here but I guess not) did fairly well this year, so gotta give it an honorable mention. :)

And so, for your reading pleasure, there you are. My posts from 2016. Thank you so much for reading my blog(s) and  my novels this year! I look forward to this year; I hope you do too!

Out with the Old, In with the New...year, that is.

Just popping here to wish you all...
happy new year from Juli D. Revezzo

What's on the goal's list for this year? Well, writing. (You're shocked, aren't you? ;))

As I write this, I have projects still in the not ready to go stage from the last several years (although, I do hope to get all of those out  at least to betas and editing this year!). So, new year=new starting line. Not in my agenda. We will see, come next New Year's eve, where all those projects stand. I do, however, believe you will see a new Victorian/Steampunk, a new Celtic Stewards Chronicles book  *knock on wood* and a new Antique Magic book (*knock on wood harder*) this year--and possibly some other dibs and dabs. That's the plan, anyway. No solid dates yet, but I'll keep you posted! Keep an eye on the blog or you can join my mailing list here.

So, the plans for the new year are to hopefully get all those going and/or out. I might do some vlogging, too, we'll see.

Anyway, I hope y'all have a good year.

Nanowrimo update day #19 #amwriting #Nanowrimo2016

Just a quickie for today. How ya'll doing? I'm ...ouchie! And a day...well,I won't say wasted. Some days I've not hit the 1667 needed, and some days I've exceeded the count. It just all depends on the day. I did do some writing yesterday, but I'm starting to feel my carpal tunnel rear it's ugly head, so I needed a break. So I shot some videos for the Youtube Pagan Challenge. Who, me? Perpetually behind? Surely you jest?

The Videos are:

and more here, if you'd like to take a break and do some mindless Youtube surfing.

On the writing front, I decided to make a left turn with my Nanowrimo manuscript so a little bit of the wip has changed. It's been a fun change, though. I've also noticed (again) that Nano's counter vs. my computer's word count are slightly different so I always have to seem to do a little more than my goal mark to make sure Nano's goal fits correctly. Oh well. it's not a big deal.

How'm I doing today?  25k words down, more to go, and 10 days to do it. Yeah. I got this. :) I think, with the idea I'm coming up with, in the end the manuscript will exceed 50,000 words. I'm just hoping I can hit that 50,000 before November 30th's cut off. I've managed before (yes, even with Thanksgiving break).

How are y'all doing with your Nano projects?

Catching up on tarot perspectives

For those of you new to my blog and writing, several years ago, I wrote a short story based on the tarot, at that time I was making a casual inspection of the cards for the use of storytelling...mainly. I'd had tarot readings at renaissance fairs in the past and some missed key incidents in my life that made me pooh-pooh their use but I got the idea for this story and started investigating meanings and so forth for the characters' use. I also had a deck I used occasionally and other than occasional use, I didn't use it very much. Meanwhile I had a specific deck I wanted, that I'd seen the cover of once, a billion years ago at Borders (I want to say it was about 2008 or 2009), and that picture stuck in my head and I was trying to find it--unsuccessfully, thanks to the fact that I don't know.... What I'd seen wasn't what I remembered or the company changed the cover or something. But I never found it again. One year, for my birthday, I had a tarot reading and discussed it with the reader. At that time, the reader suggested the search for said-deck might be part of my journey. I knew the deck was based on a Celtic mythological system somehow and that was all. Not a lot to go on when you're trying to find a specific image, especially when there are so many decks out there.

Well, this past Christmas I finally found the one I was after and since then, I've been making a more detailed investigation of the use and history and all such things about the cards. If you follow me on Instagram you've seen some of my posts about it, as I participated in Ethony's Witchytarotchallenge in June.

Cut to August and the #tarotperspectives challenge. I get involved with these challenges once in a while, but always fall behind. #tarotperspectives is no different. (A couple days ago (last week?) I drew the Queen of Pentacles which I'll post here.) Now here we are 10 days in and when I made my draw today its accompanying text turned out so long, I figured I'd just save the trouble and post it on my blog. :) For the challenge, I'm using the Smith-wait commemorative deck, the Druid Craft tarot deck, and the Llewellyn Deck--that's the deck I damned near went crazy looking for! Due to copyright stuff, I'm just going to post my one picture. For close ups of the decks you can search through Google. For yesterday's #tarotperspectives (and I say yesterday because I'm always seeming to be a day off in posting these...) I drew the 10 of wands.

10 of wands, tarot cards, Photo by Juli D. Revezzo
Tarot decks used: Druid craft copyright Phillip and Stephanie Carr-Gomm, The Smith-Waite Centennial tarot deck, copyright US Games, The Llewellyn Tarot, copyright Anne-Marie Ferguson and Llewellyn.

Now, the traditional image on the Smith-Waite/Rider-Waite (the center card in the pic above) decks always confuses. Sometimes, I think some of Pixie's imagery doesn’t make logical sense even though I get what Waite wanted her to depict: Your daily burdens obstructing your view of things and/or extra burdens weighing you down. I get that, I do. Maybe just the first glance of the picture triggers my intuition or something because then the logical part of my brain looks at the SWR picture and goes, "Well, dingbat, why would you carry a bundle of sticks in front of your face like that? Of course you're going to trip!" It doesn't make logical sense. (You'd carry your groceries that way [and too bad that couldn't somehow make its way into the Housewives Tarot or I'd be sold on that one! If you're at all into kitsch that certainly qualifies.]I digress. Anything else, I can see, but a bundle of sticks? Me, I wouldn't carry them that way. But then, I trip over unseen cracks in the floor.) The way Pixie's cards and some of its copies are painted, you'd likely be tripping over the sticks at your feet rather than anything you didn't see in front of you. Anyway, I don’t know, it's just another example of how the traditional imagery (irony on irony) trips me up sometimes. There are just so many logical ways to accomplish what the fool in the picture is trying to accomplish that I wouldn't even try that way. So the picture itself trips me up (like the lobster/crawfish problem in the moon, no logical sense--even though I get the provenance of the imagery). And yes, I get the meanings, that's not where I'm complaining. I'm thinking logically; why would these interpretations even be in the artist's mind in the first place. *sigh* So set hers aside for the moment.***

Now, the 10 of wands in the Druid Craft and Llewellyn decks make more sense to me. In those two decks, the overburdened man has at least had the sense in his head to carry his bundle more comfortably. Sure, it might still be too much for him, but, at least he doesn't make himself look like an idiot. So, don't overburden yourself. What can you drop? (Herm.....I'll need to think about that one). However, it's good advice, in this day and age where we're "on" nearly 24/7. (And don't be a fool! ;)) To the perspectives part, the Llewellyn Deck and the Druid Craft deck both show the carrier as old (or older) in age vs. the character on the SW deck that seems...well, his hair's not gray so younger. So that puts forth the idea in the former two decks "with age comes reason"? Maybe.

(Yes, there are a lot of things about the traditional decks that, were I the artist, I probably would've argued against including, but I digress... I'm betting you're not supposed to be distracted from the meaning of the card by the imagery itself, but even the art historian in me has yet to let a few things go in these artistic representations. Patrick from @inthe78cards,  who dreamed this challenge up, is right about narrowing perspectives of the cards, at least as far as this one goes for me! I hope, in time, as I learn more, I won't be so distracted by the art. )

***I stand corrected but it still doesn't mean it makes sense to me. To each his own.

Every artist....

Luxury Pen by Khunaspix

Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.

Henry Ward Beecher

Yeah, I know, but don't you just love this quote? I, of course, would change brush to pen, paints to writes, and pictures to stories, but I thought it was a great quote and inspiring for all sorts of artists out there. :) To all my artist (writers/poets/painters/sculptor/creator) friends out there, go forth and... celebrate your art. :)
