My 3 greatest strengths/weaknesses/doubts

If you're wondering where these posts come from, I'm following (unofficially) this set of prompts here.

Catching up on several posts.  I'm going to combine a few here, bear with me.

My greatest strength:

Tenacity (which some people might see as the flaw of stubbornness ;)). Once I get an idea in my head, if it has staying power, normally, I'll see it through even if it debilitates me. Case in point, a few years ago, I wrote 38k words of a novel in a week. Ouch!

Verbal ability. I can talk up a storm, once you get me going. :) Just ask my friends!
Creativity. Well...I am a writer. :) Hopefully, eloquence comes along with that.

My greatest weaknesses:

1) Self-doubt. Ye gods, I can fret with the best of them! Ever wonder why it takes me so long to put a book out? Blame it on self-doubt and panic. Every manuscript goes through the following cycle: "This is good; this sucks; it's ready, it's not; everyone says it is, I'm sure it is; no it's all wrong; I need to tear it all down and start again"). Even after me and my editors and critique partners have gone over them and over them and over them. Yep, usually, this is what delays me. Plain self-doubt and self-induced panic. Drives my editors and critique partners nuts!

And, confession time, it's also why I hesitate to speak up in a group-like setting (see, social media below). If I had my druthers, you'd look at my stories and not at me, the witch behind the curtain. ;) I'm trying to break that bad habit, if for nothing else than the sake of my business.

2) Over-researching. I do way more research on most of my books than you ever see inside the stories. More often than not, the research subjects preoccupy me for a while even after the books are released. Case in point? Tarot, the interest has hung on even after I finished my series surrounding the topic.

Another case in point, particularly this month for a WIP I'm almost done with, Italy, Italian mythology, and particularly, all things Pompeii. I don't know how that one will manifest in any yet-to-be-written stories, or if it'll just fade again, (sometimes the intrigue does), we shall see.  On the other hand, I've been intrigued with Italy ... only a scant few years less than I've been with the Celts.

You think my Celtic warrior based PNRs and Welsh-blooded ghost-hunting fictional witches give branding experts a headache next to my Gothic and Victorian-era set romances? HA! Try my heritage on for size. I'm mostly Italian, with a dose of Liverpool Celt (we think). In other words, "Hail Caesar!", "By gods, drive Caesar back into Rome where the despot belongs before he wipes us out!" (Too late!)

That? That's me, y'all. I have a sneaking suspicion that's part of why I write more than one genre, or at least it might be a contributing factor. My sweet maidenly side, and my raging Morrigan Warrior Goddess side, are constantly at (ahem, pardon the pun) war.

Ahem. Like I said, over-researching.

3) Salty snacks. Yes, not chocolate. Shocked, aren't you? I am not a big chocolate lover, like most women claim to be. I go for chips more than sweets. Don't get me wrong, I like a good cake, cookie, or (lately) jelly belly from time to time, but my go-to snack is salty.

My social media hangouts:

Twitter and Instagram have been my biggest lately. My others are in the sidebar. If you'd like to follow me on any of them, please do. :)

Some of these (okay maybe all of them) have been pulled into what makes me me, contributing to my sense of personal power, whether spiritual or just as learning experiences, writing-related, business-related, you name it.

Those are my strengths/weaknesses/doubts. What are yours?

I'll continue these prompts in the next post. Really, the next topic is a bit long to include here. :) Stay tuned!

This Samhain visit the magical forest ravines of Marsha A. Moore’s Coon Hollow Coven

I'm pleased to welcome my friend and a fantastic fantasy author, Marsha A. Moore to my little home. She's got a brand new book out in her popular Coon Hollow Coven series, and since we love witches and their stories around here, I invited her to tell us a little about it.

This Samhain visit the magical forest ravines of Marsha A. Moore’s Coon Hollow Coven

Thank you, Juli for allowing me to invite your readers down to the Hollow. Autumn is the right time to pay a visit to Coon Hollow Coven set in the dark, woodsy ravines of Southern Indiana with these two books: Blood Ice & Oak Moon, a new release and Witch’s Cursed Cabin, a chilling-good tale Samhain tale now on sale for 99 cents.

Blood Ice & Oak Moon is a newly released Coon Hollow Coven Tale by Marsha A. Moore
Genre: Paranormal romance
Description:
Esme Underhill is about to discover a darkness hidden inside her that could destroy her chance for independence and possibly kill her.

Esme’s mother took her young daughter away from Southern Indiana’s Coon Hollow Coven to prevent her from learning about the unusual witchcraft she had inherited. When Esme is twenty-seven, her beloved Grammy Flora passes away and leaves her property in the Hollow to her granddaughter. With this opportunity to remake her life and gain independence, Esme attempts to emulate Grammy Flora as a wildwood mystic who relies on the hedge world of faeries to locate healing herbs. But fae are shrewd traders. When they open their world to her, she must meet the unknown malevolence of her birthright.

Thayne, the handsome king of the fae Winter Court, faces his own struggle to establish autonomy as a new regent. He is swept into the tempest of Esme’s unfolding powers, a dangerous threat to his court. His sworn duty is to protect his people, despite Esme’s beauty and allure, which tear at his resolve.

Both Esme’s and Thayne’s dreams of personal freedom are lost…unless they can trust each other and overcome surmounting dangers.

Series description:

The Coon Hollow Coven Tales series is about a coven of witches in a fictitious southern Indiana community, south of Bloomington, the neck of the woods where Marsha A. Moore spent her favorite childhood years surrounded by the love of a big family. The books are rich with a warm Hoosier down-home feel. There are interesting interactions between coven members and locals from the nearby small town of Bentbone. If magic wasn’t enough of a difference between the two groups, the coven folk adhere to the 1930s lifestyle that existed when the coven formed.

A note to readers: ALL THE COON HOLLOW COVEN TALES NOVELS CAN BE READ AS STAND ALONE BOOKS. The series is about one community, and its residents may pass in and out of various books, but each book has its own unique and special story to be told.

Excerpt:

Dear Miss Rebecca Esmeralda Underhill,

Please accept our deepest sympathies concerning the loss of your grandmother, Flora Esmeralda Freestone. She was much loved and well-respected in our community.

As per her documented wishes, the ownership of her property on 10510 East Lost Branch Run passes to you. This transfer has been filed in our office. At the request of High Priest Logan Dennehy, all council members have voted to reinstate you as a member of Coon Hollow Coven after your absence of twenty years.

However, despite Coon Hollow Coven being your birthplace, a majority indicated the lapsed time was sufficient cause to withhold transfer of Ms. Freestone’s ceremonial standing to you, which customarily would accompany a property transference to blood kin of adult age. For explanation of how you may attain ceremonial approval in your name, please visit the council office at 50013 Owls Tail Creek Road.

Enclosed, please find pamphlets describing the expected dress and personal property code of our coven, which adheres to the time period in which the coven was founded in 1935. This is to best protect our witchcraft traditions.

Sincerely,
Nathan Wells
Coon Hollow Coven Council, secretary

Esme’s gaze fixed on the words that acknowledged her as the property owner. She’d never lived alone. First her mom, then a roommate and finally Doug. Esme’s shoulders straightened and chest lifted with strength and independence at the thought of owning her own place. But, why wasn’t she approved for ceremonial status? Her hands gripped the edge of the table, knuckles whitening, and her heart raced. It’s not fair. I won’t be accepted as a healer. Only children not yet graduated from the coven’s secondary school were kept from participating fully in ceremonies. Esme loved learning the ways of a hedge witch and helped Gram every summer from grade school through college. Fascinated with tending Gram’s plants, Esme even studied botany in college.

The research company she worked for had already accepted her request to work offsite and study mystic plants…at the stipulation she be reduced to part-time. She needed work here as a healer to supplement her income. She’d assumed incorrectly that her experience with Gram and college studies would’ve qualified her as an accepted healer. Her standing in the coven would be important to patrons, all except Gram’s closest friends who knew Esme well. An attempt at independence seemed bound to fail before she started.

Her gaze drifted to the name used in the letter’s greeting. She hadn’t seen her full name in print for decades. It didn’t even appear on her birth certificate, which labeled her as Rebecca E. Underhill, one of the many things her mother insisted upon. Mother wanted nothing to do with the coven or witchcraft and said, “Esmeralda sounds too much like a witch. No need to encourage the darkness out.” Grudgingly, she accepted her own mother’s middle name for her child to uphold custom. Esme never understood Mother’s view since Gram was well-respected for her kind and gentle strength by all who knew her.

To Esme’s Indianapolis friends, she was Becky. Only her mother addressed her as Rebecca. But inside, she was Esme. Gram had always called her that, or Esmeray in carefree moments. Her middle name suited the mystic inside Esme, something Gram must have known. If only Esme could use Gram’s last name Freestone. Underhill felt like a lead weight.

Esme set the letter aside and paced the length of the rag runner through the small kitchen. Frustration wound her along a circular track through the sitting room, to her closet-sized guest room, and back. The space was too small to work answers out of her tangled mind. On the second pass, she sank onto the goose down comforter of Gram’s iron bed. Billowing fluff sheltered her from the problems. Gram’s linens, scented with homegrown lavender and rose sleep liniment, comforted Esme and tugged on her eyelids.

She forced her eyes open and pushed herself up and off the bed. Hiding wasn’t the way to begin this fresh start in life. She’d done enough kowtowing to stronger wills, letting Doug and her mother run over her. At the back door, she paused long enough to grab a rain parka and pulled it on as she strode outside.

Gram’s cat, Dove, zipped alongside with a sharp meow, slipping out before the door closed. Esme smiled, grateful the tomcat kept Gram company during her illness. She’ doted on the smoky blue stray that happened into her garden one early fall afternoon and never left. Gram swore he was an omen and chose his name ‘cause of his white-winged breast patch. She used to say, “One day soon my spirit will fly on those outspread wings, and together Dove and me we’ll roam the wooded hills.” Gram loved those hills. Thinking about the hills drew Esme to gather Dove and head outside.

Ice still peppered down, adding more layers to the spiky crystalline grass blades. A breeze blew at Esme’s back. She allowed the wind to guide her toward the woods behind the cabin. At the trailhead, ice coating the bittersweet vine berries glistened the same shade of blue she’d rubbed from Dove’s coat. Alert to the strange color, she followed a line of branches dangling sky blue icicles, each one more fanciful and richer in hue than the last. A beautiful play of light, ranging from cerulean to ultramarine. Even worth the chill at her ankles, which were bare in her cropped jeans.

Whenever Esme paused to marvel at the colored icicles, Dove pawed them and then dodged when they dropped.

Minutes later and deeper in the forest, the ice pelted heavier, and Esme reached for the hood of her raincoat. Strands of hair fell forward, woven with frozen ultramarine threads. The same purplish tint coated twigs along the path. Light from the sky reached this far into the woods since all but the oak trees had lost their leaves. The unusual color couldn’t be caused by light refraction. She’d never seen any rain, sleet, or snow like this, not even in the Hollow. Grammy had taught her a little about omens. Was this a sign?

Esme scurried along the trail, sliding at times and spotting richer and deeper shades of purple and red-violets. At the far side of the woodlot, iris-hued spider webs clung to berry brambles. She gasped at the beauty. Tempted to touch, she extended a hand but at the last instant resisted.
A deep groan echoed from the adjoining property ahead.

She snatched her hand back and scanned for some god of nature angry at her ruinous attempt. Grappling for Dove, Esme crouched behind a thicket.

The cat gave a single hiss, then clung to her leg.

In the distance, a big middle-aged man, both tall and wide, staggered behind a shed, dragging a long, clumsy load wrapped and tied into a blanket. His balding head snapped in her direction, eyes wide and face blanched gray-white. “Who’s there?” His booming voice sliced the delicate webs from their branches. Crimson freezing rain assaulted both trail and yard.

Esme froze, afraid to move and attract his attention. Her heart, drumming against her ribs, threatened to give her away. She wanted to run home. But if the colored ice omen was meant for her, she needed to stay and learn its meaning. Could the man see the omen?

Thankfully, her cover must’ve fooled Baldy. He resumed lugging the limp bundle, and didn’t seem affected by the magical ice.

From between the tangle of branches, Esme studied him.

His wet, black shirt clung to his round belly. Blood-red ice coated his load, tracing the outline of a human body. Smaller than his, probably a female. Was she dead? Of natural causes? Or had he murdered her? The thought wrapped around Esme’s breath and trapped it deep in her lungs. Her legs twitched. Gaze riveted on Baldy, she positioned to bolt from potential danger.

He rolled the body into a depression Esme couldn’t see.

She leaned to one side, bracing herself with a hand on the ground.

Over what looked like a freshly dug grave, Baldy grunted as he shoveled and kicked dirt and large rocks. Clumps of red clung to long strands of his comb-over, now hanging along one ear. Was it ice or real blood?

Dove huddled closer, and Gram’s voice from years ago spoke in Esme’s mind. “Blood ice is stained with revenge.”

Crimson liquid dripped from the man’s eyes and fell from grimacing jowls. The face of a demon.

August 29th. the Two of Wands.

And the 29th, : I drew the two of wands.

Two of Wands tarot cards from Llewellyn Tarot, copyright Llewellyn, The Druidcraft Deck, by Phillip Carr-Gomm and Stephanie Gomm and the Smith-Waite Centennial Tarot by US Games, photo by Juli D. Revezzo
2 of Wands from Llewellyn Tarot, copyright Llewellyn, The Druidcraft Deck, by Phillip Carr-Gomm and Stephanie Gomm and the Smith-Waite Centennial Tarot by US Games

This one was a new draw for me so I've not done much work at all with this card. I see it as a choice between the what the world wants of you, and what your dreams ( or intuition denoted by the crystal ball in the Llewellyn deck ) demands of you. Also, focus on that goal.

What the actual meaning is? OMG, it depends on where you look. Biddy Tarot's interpretation makes sense (and I swear I didn't look it up until after I wrote all the above down!) and the Druidcraft Tarot deck's book make sense (there, they say the two wands are seen as a doorway), but I also happened to read another book that says it means "be wary of a rich man". Okay, maybe? I can understand why someone might think that of the fella in the Smith-Waite card, but dude that's not the meaning I get what I see this at all. He reminded me more of a Magellan type than a mustache twirling money hungry fanatic out to ruin everything. I guess he could be be, but I don't see it. So that one just left me scratching my head. #tarotproblems

Tarot perspective from August 9--The 10 of Swords.

This is part 1 of the previous post regarding #tarotperspectives for this week. For August 9th, I drew the 10 of swords. The end of a conflict(?).

Again, I always like to take a look at the differences in the art. So, here, in the Llewellyn deck, Anne-Marie Ferguson (copyright Llewellyn) stepped back from the traditional imagery. Her image (left) doesn’t have the poor woman stabbed where the Smith-Waite Centennial Deck (Copyright US Games) and the Druid Craft decks' men are. She does seem to be mostly drowned and trapped by them. So, whatever their battles they still all came to bad or exhausting ends.

And yet, an end is just an opportunity for a new beginning, and can I just say "Woohoo!" to that? New beginnings are awesome, aren't they? (Pay no mind to the pile of newly-started manuscripts behind the curtain!) But it's still an ending of some kind. I look at these cards and I see what various interpretations say about it, that it might not be a horrible end, and I have to agree. (Ironically, I'm almost finished with something I've been working on, so hey. Ending. Not so bad).

Yet when I draw it, all I can think about is, yes, she's going to have some sort of headache there (back ache?). Taken altogether with the draw from the other day (that I've posted here), would anyone be surprised if I wonder if I should be the teensiest bit nervous? Again, newbie me could still have this all wrong.

And yet, looking at the gal in the Llewellyn card, maybe it's not so bad. Maybe she just needs a breather. A few moments and she'll be up, grabbing one of those swords, Xena style, and charging back in. Not so bad!

On the other hand, it would make for an interesting story: Some girl walks into a bar, ten swords sticking out of her back and... Herm... Scuze me. I think I have an idea! ;)

What are your thoughts on the 10 of swords?

The Devil card--Tarot Perspectives

Oh, lord! Of course this one would show up now. Nothing like starting off (so to speak, I did pick this on the 9th) with a bang. I actually chose two cards this day. The Devil (reversed) and the 10 of swords. This post covers my thoughts and "perspectives" on the Devil card.

In a word? Aww...nuts. Now what?
devil cards by Llewellyn Tarot, Smith-Waite Centennial Tarot Deck, copyright US Games, Druidcraft Tarot deck by Phillip Carr-Gomm and Stephanie Gomm
devil cards by Llewellyn Tarot, Smith-Waite Centennial Tarot Deck, copyright US Games, Druidcraft Tarot deck by Phillip Carr-Gomm and Stephanie Gomm

Ahem. The Devil card, reversed.

Reversed cards drive me nuts. But then, aren't they the bane of most readers? So I've read.... Looking at this one... Eh. I guess I feel like it means whatever had hold over you is truly gone. The imagery holds true in the Carr-Gomm deck and the Smith-Waite Centennial Deck (Copyright US Games ) but not so much in the Llewellyn deck (copyright Llewellyn ) as no human (other than the "huntsman/devil guy") is involved.

The Horned One/devil card by Llewellyn Tarot
Llewellyn Tarot, The Horned One/Wild Huntsman/Devil by Amne-Marie Ferguson, copyright Llewellyn

He's just.... hermit-like. (While his companion fox might be Mr Trickery to others, I think foxes are adorable, so the traditional interpretation of him doesn’t hold for me either). So maybe for me, his appearance here means "you're not so easily tricked" and (reversed Druidcraft devil)  not complacent. Or maybe even you are clever, wily, and artful--and you know it!

That doesn't sound so bad. Although, yeah don't we all have our favorite illusions?

So, maybe some skepticism has its advantages! ;) I do love that fox, though.

Meaning aside, honestly this card just always makes me groan. The image and even the name of the Devil card is another one of those that make me wonder, historically, wtf were the creators thinking including a devil in this deck that they wanted not to freak people out? Yes, yes, I know what they wanted it to mean, but didn't they know anything about the fundamental leanings of the Christian world they lived in? (Didn't Waite know that people were executed two centuries before based on fear of this mythological creature? *shakes head*) Or did they just want to screw with people's heads?

(And if that's so, what does that say about the creators?)

I mean, come on, cards themselves were being denounced as devil's tools right there in the beginning of its life (some sources say) . It's one of those images that, if I had been on the consulting committee about this, I would've suggested picking some other image. *sigh* I'm not sure that the "Wild Huntsman" (like in the Llewellyn Deck and the Druid Craft Deck) doesn't still hold the same superstition-inducing mask for some really staunch fundamentalists. Look, I've been pagan for a long time but some of the decisions of the creators of the Craft just leave me shaking my head, and this? This (along with the pentacles, hello!) leave me wondering at how  ... unproductive the perpetual use of such imagery seems. I guess they were never cornered by well-meaning Bible thumpers. Explain its "true meaning" all you want, but it's still THE DEVIL about which a huge swath of the population are paranoid, and have been for millennia. And you don't change millennia of feeling by waving a red flag in the proverbial bull's face. (In fact, cynical me wonders if some of the interpretations of this card aren't fueled by that paranoia and superstition about the figure of THE DEVIL, whatever the writer might want you to believe they believe or don't about the Judeo-Christian pantheon from which the devil springs). It's why I don't think I'll ever have anything but head-shake relationship with this card (but never say never).

Just my two cents.

Whatever. We're stuck with it. Now what? At least it can help with writing villains...muwahahaha! What do you think of the Devil card?

What mysteries will Cait find in the palm of a teen's hand? http://bit.ly/2b4xxor #newrelease in Antique Magic #paranormal @julidrevezzo [Tweet this!]

Welcome to yet another Weekend Writing Warriors.

And, yes, my friends, your eyes do not deceive you, the new Antique Magic novel, MOURNING DOVE LOCKET, is here! :) So what are Caitlin and company up to this time? Here's a little taste of the book in 8 lines. A little set up, a teenaged girl has come up to Caitlin in a thrift store and offered her a gold locket, now she's checking with the mother to make certain she has permission to offer it...or that's the plan, anyway, until the teen opens her mouth:

A woman of clear Hispanic descent stood [at a display], perusing [some] items. Caitlin approached her yet her daughter made the introductions. “Mom, she’ll give Abuela her necklace.”

Did the teen have any idea what she said? [Caitlin] peered at the girl. She was no ghost.

The woman blinked dark eyes. “It’s a locket, mija, and you know she doesn’t need it anymore,” she said, a hint of accent to her voice. “Don’t pay any attention to her, ma’am.”

She doesn’t need it anymore. The grandmother might indeed be dead.

More significantly, the locket’s owner is surrounded by Otherworld spirits. Caitlin recognizes in the girl all the signs of a budding witch in the midst of a dangerous crisis.

Can she and her covenmates protect the girl and assist her in embracing her powers, before those beyond the veil extract their revenge?

Witch’s Cursed Cabin--new release paranormal romance By Marsha A. Moore

Fantasy author Marsha A. Moore stops by today on the release of her latest paranormal romance, in her series, Coon Hollow Coven Tales, to tell us a little bit about her new release,  WITCH'S CURSED CABIN. You know how much we love witches, around here, so I asked her to tell us a little about their her heroine's newest adventure! Take it away, Marsha.

Would you dare to visit Coon Hollow Coven’s haunted carriage house?

by

Marsha A. Moore

Coon Hollow is the setting for Witch’s Cursed Cabin, the second of my series, Coon Hollow Coven Tales, and there are a lot of strange happenings going on down in the Hollow.

The Hollow is a fictitious small valley in southern Indiana, south of Bloomington. Somewhere in Brown County near Nashville and Bean Blossom, if you’re from around those parts. It’s Hoosier hill-country at its finest.

The coven was founded on strict rules of adherence to lifestyle and customs that existed at the time of the coven’s conception, in the mid-1930s. The rationale: to keep the transmission of witchcraft from one generation to the next as pure as possible. Members dress in styles of that period and drive long sleek Packards, Studebakers, and Nashes.

Coon Hollow’s coven members stay to themselves but sometimes need to do business in the nearby small town of Bentbone. When witches and townies mingle, all sorts of trouble and fun can happen.

Several times during the year, the coven puts on magical events open to the public as charity fundraisers for their schools and eldercare. Witch’s Cursed Cabin opens with the coven preparing for their annual Halloween haunted house. Real spiders are enchanted to drop onto guests’ faces. Bespelled live rats run the length of the halls, not stopping for human feet, legs, or other body parts. Ick! Floorboards randomly are set to give way and take selected guests to unknown destinations. Common bedroom objects, such as brushes, nightgowns, and toys, are empowered to chase guests. The scares are so real, people come from all over the state to see these attractions!

You’re invited to enjoy the thrills and magic at the coven’s haunted house, and while you’re in the Hollow, stay for the chilling Samhain celebration in Witch’s Cursed Cabin!

Thank you, Juli, for featuring my new release today on your blog!

Thank you, Marsha. Spiders dropping onto people's faces? EEKK! Thanks for the warning. I think maybe I'll try to find another path through the haunted house, this year. ;) Want to check out Witch's Cursed Cabin? Here's the synopsis:

Book Description:

Eager to be on her own away from home, twenty-year-old Aggie Anders accepts a relative’s invitation to live in Coon Hollow Coven. Although she’s a witch from a different coven, what locals say about the Hollow confuses her. How can witchcraft there live and breathe through souls of the dead?

Aggie’s new residence in this strange southern Indiana world is a deserted homestead cabin. The property’s carriage house serves as the coven’s haunted Halloween fundraiser. It’s a great opportunity for her to make new friends, especially with the coven’s sexy new High Priest Logan.

But living in the homestead also brings Aggie enemies. Outsiders aren’t welcome. A cantankerous, old neighbor tries to frighten her off by warning her that the homestead is cursed. Local witches who practice black magic attempt to use their evil to drive Aggie away and rid their coven of her unusual powers as a sun witch.
Determined to stay and fit in, Aggie discovers not only that the cabin is cursed, but she alone is destined to break the curse before moonrise on Samhain. If she fails, neither the living nor the dead will be safe.

About the Coon Hollow Coven Tales Series

The series is about a coven of witches in a fictitious southern Indiana community, south of Bloomington, the neck of the woods where I spent my favorite childhood years surrounded by the love of a big family. The books are rich with a warm Hoosier down-home feel. There are interesting interactions between coven members and locals from the nearby small town of Bentbone. If magic wasn’t enough of a difference between the two groups, the coven folk adhere to the 1930s lifestyle that existed when the coven formed.

Excerpt from Chapter One: The Homestead

A shove of my shoulder pried the rusty hinges on the heavy log cabin door loose. I flung my blond braid to my back and peered inside. Beings and critters, alive and furry as well as undead and translucent, flew, crawled, or slithered across dark recesses of the hallway, sitting room, and stairwell.

“You weren’t kidding. This place is haunted.” I shuddered and looked over my shoulder at Cerise. She looked perky as always with her dark bobbed hair and lively brown eyes beneath horn-rimmed eyeglasses. “Were those things relations or varmints?” I took a cautious step over the threshold to escape the blustery weather and unbuttoned my corduroy jacket.
“Oh, both, Aggie. Ghosts of witch kin and their talking animal familiars,” she said and moved past me to lift sheets off the sitting room furniture.

I raised a brow, curious about what talking familiars were but was too afraid to ask. She didn’t seem to think they were bad, and I needed a place to stay.

Cerise dropped the sheets in a pile and wiped her dusty hands on her skirt. “Those sorts of ghosts are in all the homes here in Coon Hollow Coven. Maybe some animal spirits, too, from the surrounding woods. This property has at least fifty acres of forest. The ghosts are harmless, part of the family. At least no neighbors have complained, that I’ve heard.”

Eyeing corners of the parlor and the length of the hall, I wondered if I could ever get used to living with ghosts of people who’d lived here before. In New Wish, Indiana, where I’d spent my entire twenty years, we only had an occasional ghost. Usually lost souls who, for some reason, hadn’t found their peace before death took them. Most times, those folks had been tormented by darkness and experimented with black magic while they’d lived. Or so Mom told me, but I always thought that was just her way of keeping me in line.

I pushed those thoughts out of my head. I wanted a place of my own more than anything else, and not in the tiny town of New Wish where everyone knew me…or thought they did. They all said I was the spitting image of my Aunt Faye, with the same light blond straight hair, deep blue eyes, dark brows, and quiet personality. Everyone thought I’d grow up to be like her with a houseful of kids, seven or more. Fact was, they didn’t know me. I wasn’t sure I even knew myself. There was so much I wanted to learn and do that wouldn’t happen if I stayed at my parents’ home.

Cerise struggled to open the stuck window. “Aggie, can you help me here? Some fresh air might tempt a few spirits outside. This place has been vacant since my mother passed in 2009. We might find just about anything in here after five years.”

Witch's Moonstone Locket by Marsha A. Moore, New adult paranormal romance, witch fiction

Synopsis:

Twenty-three-year-old Jancie Sadler was out of the room when her mother died, and her heart still longs for their lost goodbye. Aching to ease her sorrow, Aunt Starla gives Jancie a diary that changes her entire life. In entries from the 1930s, her great grandmother revealed how she coped with her own painful loss by seeking out a witch from nearby Coon Hollow Coven. The witch wore the griever’s moonstone locket, which allowed whoever could unlock its enchantment to talk with the dead.

Determined to find that locket, Jancie goes to the coven’s annual carnival held in her small southern Indiana town of Bentbone. This opposes her father’s strict rule: stay away from witches. But she’s an adult now and can make her own decisions. She meets Rowe McCoy, the kind and handsome witch who wears the moonstone. He agrees to let her try to open the locket, but they’re opposed by High Priestess Adara and her jealous desire to possess him. Desperate for closure with her mother, Jancie persists and cannot turn away from a perilous path filled with magic, romance, and danger.

Also available on Kindle and in paperback.

Catherine Stine bewitching blog tour--Witch of the Cards

Author Catherine Stine has released a new novel,WITCH OF THE CARDS, that mixes witches, magic, tarot, and a little suspense. I couldn't help but invite her here to tell us about it and a little about the tarot. :)  There's a giveaway at the end, too. Do read on.

All About the Tarot

by Catherine Stine

tarot cards

The Tarot has fascinated me for quite a while. I remember when I first left home I was not quite eighteen. I moved into a large ramshackle house in Philadelphia, and I would climb over the fence dividing my place from the next-door neighbors. Why? Because the lady who lived there was an expert Tarot card reader! She would read my cards almost every night. Did I take it all seriously? Not really… but it was completely entertaining and sometimes the cards messages rang true.
