Summer Solstice #WitchBlogWed #SummerSolstice #litha #bloggerblast

Summer solstice, aka Litha, is here once again.. I don't know about you, but I feel like it started weeks ago. (In fact, I was talking to my current narrator, yesterday, who lives in Britain, and she said they're sweltering too!). Since starting to follow the "Wheel of the year" the official holi-dates have always posed a conundrum.

(Word of the day: Conundrum! I've used it twice already this morning.)

There's the official belief that the cold/heat doesn't go away/get started until certain dates, that just don't jibe with the reality of the good ole south. (Or to be honest, the modern "We've screwed up our environment" world). Nonetheless, remember, the solstice marks the tilt of the earth toward/away from the sun, so whatever the official weather (1 million degrees or just 90) the energy of the day is evident and important. The flowers are sweltering er, blooming. If you can't stand a bonfire right now (who could?) there are other ways to honor the day.  in lieu of a fire, you could light a yellow, or red candle for your ritual.

For a fire-less version (and hey, don't knock easy ;)), you can go sit outside and take in nature (don't forget your sunscreen!). Maybe pour a  libation to the summer gods--of some iced tea, maybe?

Putting a few ice cubes in your plants to give them (and/or the landwights and faeries!) a break from the heat Personally, I'd think of doing this after sundown. My dad always watered plants after dusk. they hold the moisture better, he said.

It's also a new moon, this solstice so that gives you a bit of opposites to reflect on (the height of summer, being the darkest moon--there's irony for you!)

And you could pop over to Eternal Haunted Summer and check out the latest issue of the zine for some solstice reading. :)

For me, I'm inside with the A/C blasting and, as ever, finishing up a new book that should've been out by now (stay tuned!). :)

Whatever you plan to do for the day, reading, beaching, listening to your favorite "summery songs" or watching your favorite summer movie, or bonfire-ing in the heat, I wish you all a blessed Summer Solstice (and a stormless summer!)

Five Facts about Samhain--#Sundayblogshare #Samhain #Samhain2016

Samhain (or Halloween) is one of my favorite holidays. I always loved dressing up. I've been Alice in Wonderland...a witch, an angel, a vampire. Even Princess Leia!

Since I've gotten a little older, every year about this time I find myself revisiting the stories around Samhain. By now, most of you have heard the accepted stories about Samhain, how it's night when the veil's thinnest, how it's the Celtic new year. Well...

According to the lore, there's no doubt Samhain was important.

What we do know is the Celts would hold their most important Tribal meetings at this time of year. And the lore itself bears this out. For instance, in "The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn" we find this at the very opening:

"EVERY year the men of Ulster were accustomed to hold festival together; and the time when they held it was for three days before Samhain, the Summer-End, and for three days after that day, and upon Samhain itself."

So they definitely saw it as the end of summer. Many a time when a fae being or god crosses into our world, it's at Samhain.

In the story of Nera, a mischievous soul asks the hero Nera to "put a rope around the foot of a hanged criminal" The ghost then wakes up and asks Nera for a drink. EEP!!!

So supernatural mischief, yes. Important day, yes. New year? Well.... some sources say yes, some sources don't mention new year in conjunction with it at all. Whatever the ancient Celts really thought about Samhain, we'll never know. But they left us with what has become a day of fun.

Foods of Samhain
I thought I'd send you off with a little feast. Some sources say Pigs were slaughtered to give to the kings as tribute. So definitely pigs formed some portion of Samhain feasts. Some sources I read suggest pomegranates are good to eat on this night, however…. Remember Persephone. I think I’d stay away from the pomegranates, if I were you!

Apples were bit, too. Apples were considered a food of the Otherworld. For instance, in the Irish epic poem  The Voyage of Bran, about the god-king's journey into the Otherworld, a woman comes from the Otherworld and offers a apple branch (silver, no less!) to Bran. With this, he sets off on his journey.

Peeling an apple was used as a divination tool: The longer the peel, the longer the person doing the peeling would live. They were cored and candied and baked, for the Samhain revelers' feasts,
Also, pour a libation (of apple juice?) for loved ones who've passed, esp. if you've lost a few this year (I have, alas!)

(*it's hard to say whether Samhain was a holiday outside the British isles. I'd have to do more research on it to answer that question!)

So, there you go. A few little facts about Samhain. And if you do invite your Ancestors in tonight? Do leave them a little feast, perhaps on a little plate on your altar. They will be hungry! Have a wonderful Samhain.

What are you planning for the festival?

This week and a blog hop. #SundayBlogShare

Sunday post image
Sunday Post was conceived by Kimberly at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

So, this week, I spent some time working on a new book--starring Caitlin. I'm having fun with it, so far but time will tell what its length will be. With the Antique Magic series, I've gone a little loose with expected titles as it seems to just keep shelling out the ideas. I'm hopeful with this manuscript, as I was with MOURNING DOVE LOCKET when it popped into my head. *knock on wood*

Also this week I took part in the #OctoberFrights blog hop, found some great new blogs and writer/blogger friends and added a few blog posts to the mix myself.

And I picked up a few books.

Struck by Clarissa Johal

Which I found via the hop, and
Tapas, Carrot Cake and a Corpse (A Charlotte Denver Cozy Mystery, Culinary Cozy Mystery Book 1) by Sherri Bryan

I did a take a few pictures this week. A pretty sunset, that I saw while driving that, by the time I got parked and out of the car, moved behind a cloud. *sigh*

sunset by Juli D. Revezzo
Went from bright pink to dull gray blue. But at least I got to see it.

Also a little factoid related to my Gothic novel Lady of the Tarot, today is the anniversary of the beheading of Marie Antoinette, in 1793 during the French Revolution.

So... hail the queen, as my grandmother used to say (except she meant Elizabeth, but it fits)!

Blog posts for the week:
October Frights Blog hop final and a giveaway. (The giveaway ends tomorrow, if you'd like to put your name in the hat--tonight at midnight, I'd say. Because rafflecopter has tricked me before.)
a blog post about my zombie novelette being free (which it isn't anymore so...read the post if you like, but the freebie day is over.)
A guest post by fantasy and paranormal romance author Marsha A. Moore about her Witch's Cursed Cabin sale.
And a post about her new book Blood Ice and Oak Moon.
And finally, the hop's first day article, When is Death not Death.

So, how was your week?

'Roman' roads were actually built by the Celts, new book claims - Telegraph

'Roman' roads were actually built by the Celts, new book claims - Telegraph.

I found this article online some time ago and you know? I almost feel like saying "Well, d'uh." I mean, it's not surprising. Really. I'm waiting for the day researchers find out we got a heck of a lot more from the ancient Celts than we know... After all, there were Celts spread all over Greece and Rome at one time. If nothing else, it'd make an interesting (at least to me) alternative history story. ;) Just thought I'd share.

10 Books On Your TBR pile From Before You Started Blogging That You STILL Haven't Read Yet

A meme by the Broke and the Bookish.
This week's topic: Ten Books That Have Been On Your Shelf (Or TBR) From Before You Started Blogging That You STILL Haven't Read Yet

Oh, let's see... This is easy. Sort of. In fact it would be very easy to double the number! I've been blogging for many years; my first site was built in 2000 and centered around, you guessed it, books (yes, that long ago), and (unrelated) I've been collecting books for longer than that. So I've got a huge collection. Alas, yes, there are books on the shelves I've never gotten around to reading, even though I've meant to. In no particular order:

The Fortress of Grey Ice by J.V. Jones.
I started the series, with the first book, never actually finished it, and so that left book 2 sitting on my shelf. I loved her other series.I don't know why I couldn't finish this one.

Lady of the Forest by Jennifer Roberson.
Like Fortress, I keep meaning to get to this one and just haven't had a chance. I like the era, I like the character of Robin Hood, I like Jennifer's writing, I just haven't got to this one yet.

In Conquest Born by C.S. Friedman
Another I bought round about 2004, with the intention of reading years ago.

Idoru by William Gibson.
Probably got this one around 2005. Nope. Still haven't read it.

The Ten Thousand by Michael Curtis Ford.
I got this around 2002 in another fit of trying to find something different to read, still haven't gotten to it. (Jo, you want a book?)

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin
Another, got but not yet read. Luckily, this one was only bought, like, last year.

Decision at Doona by Anne McCaffrey
I bought this book the year she died, yes five years ago, or the year after, I forget which but it was fairly soon after she passed.

Bard by Morgan Llywelyn

Red Branch by Morgan Llywelyn
Yep, yep. Had these a few years (since 2010?) and I've put them on and off my reading list for years. They're back on so I hope to get to them this year.

The Trouble With Demons by Lisa Shearin.
I got this (brand new) right after I read Armed and Magical, about the time it came out. Alas, it too still sits there.

The Opposite of Fate  and also The Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan.
I read The Bonesetter's Daughter, The Kitchen God's Wife, and The Joy Luck Club in 2004 and 2005, fell in love, so got this one. My relationship with literary fiction waxes and wanes and, these two poor books, it waned before I got to them. I still love Amy Tan's stuff, though. Definitely check them out if you haven't!

Also, Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Four Kings  by Amy Kelly and Duchess of Aquitaine by Margaret Ball, when I was in a fit of reading about the queen. I have actually read bits and pieces of Eleanor and the Four Kings, though.

Why haven't I gone back and read any of these? *shrugs* My own writing got in the way, interest in the titles waned, ebook reading got in the way, review reading got in the way (when I was reviewing).  In some cases (like The Ten Thousand and Duchess of Aquitane) I decided I'd rather read non-fiction about those subjects. Take your pick. And too, I think some of these were bought not just out of sheer curiosity, but as a learning tool while I was digging around getting a handle on writing, and deciding what to concentrate on (Or I'm just a book collector, that has a lot to do with it too). I'll probably get to them some day or thin the herd, but gods know, other books will take their places. :)

Ooops! That's more than ten. So what are your "books you haven't gotten to yet"? Do you have any?

July 20--walking on the moon

Today is the anniversary of the first time Man walked on the Moon. For those of us Pisces, well, the moon's always been a favorite. :) That won't surprise you, I bet. I take lots of pictures of the moon, after all, and (though I do have some version of it that don't quite work for me) the Moon card in the Tarot is one of my favorites. I wish I'd been old enough to remember Neil Armstrong's walk, firsthand. Alas, no. But the moon's always fascinated me. I just love a full moon, don't you?

Every artist....

Luxury Pen by By khunaspix
Luxury Pen by Khunaspix

Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.

Henry Ward Beecher

Yeah, I know, but don't you just love this quote? I, of course, would change brush to pen, paints to writes, and pictures to stories, but I thought it was a great quote and inspiring for all sorts of artists out there. :) To all my artist (writers/poets/painters/sculptor/creator) friends out there, go forth and... celebrate your art. :)

Vampires in Pop Culture--Movies #‎Octoberfrights‬ #giveaway

2015 October Frights Blog Hop, #‎Octoberfrights‬

Vampires in pop culture

Silver-Screen Vampires
Hollywood has always been fascinated with vampires; from the early days of the industry with such classics as Nosferatu and Bela Lugosi's portrayal of the Undead Romanian Count right up to the present day and works such as Dracula 2000, Interview with the Vampire and the (tragically underrated) Queen of the Damned, these beings are constantly recurring film stars. The most notable portrayal of him would have to be Christopher Lee:

Dracula and Bram Stoker Today--Christopher Lee

Short Bio and list of his movies to 1999

The Dracula Myth
From HH : the UNofficial Hammer Films Site

Christopher Lee talks about his stint with Hammer Films and his role as Dracula

http://youtu.be/XY-xzYbEocM

I'm not too impartial to Gary Oldman's portrayal of the Count either. Now, that's a rendition to swoon over, ladies but never forget...he's a monster!
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMt47xHvjGo]

And the much maligned but actually quite good rendition of Anne Rice's Queen of the Damned starring Stuart Towsend, as Lestat de Lioncourt

And of course that giant of Pop Culture, Tom Cruise took his turn as Lestat de Lioncourt, and Brad Pitt took his as Louis... Or the creme de la creme Dracula portrayal by the inimitable Bela Lugosi.

They've all put some sort of stamp on the face of the vampire, and probably will continue to do so, for better or for worse! Some will no doubt fall flat on their faces (like USA/SF Channel's Dracula, Prince of Darkness--for all that they tried, bless their dark hearts. ;))

And then there's that paragon of teen angst, Twilight.

*cough* Well, I only saw the first one; honestly that was all I could stand. As bad as the novel is, the movie's worse. *shakes head* High school was never like that for me, and me? been there, done that. Don't remember it in quite that light, thanks.  But me, I prefer the "real" vampires. The ones that would rip a girl's throat out without worry about it. This whole, emasculated, "mooning love slave" vampire thing...*shrugs* eh.

Whatever.... It's done the author(s) well...For the moment. I always wonder what will be the thoughts on our "latest thing" a hundred years down the line. Will Twilight survive the test of time? We shall--or rather our descendants--see.

What's your favorite portrayal of the vampire?

Thanks for stopping by. You can see the rest of the participants in the hop by clicking the blue button below. Happy Halloween!!
