Every artist....

Luxury Pen by By khunaspix
Luxury Pen by Khunaspix

Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.

Henry Ward Beecher

Yeah, I know, but don't you just love this quote? I, of course, would change brush to pen, paints to writes, and pictures to stories, but I thought it was a great quote and inspiring for all sorts of artists out there. :) To all my artist (writers/poets/painters/sculptor/creator) friends out there, go forth and... celebrate your art. :)

Once Upon a Time

This is also on my main blog here.

So, I started watching this new show on ABC, Once Upon a Time. Have you seen this? It's a twisted-fairy tale series. This cop, Emma Swan (played by Jennifer Morrison, the gal that was a doctor on House) comes to Storybrooke and (somehow--yes, I need to catch up ) gets stuck there. The mayor takes an immediate dislike to her, but then she seems to hate everyone, especially a young woman named Mary Margaret--AKA Snow White-- (played by Ginnifer Goodwin). Emma's son has this book he carries around full of all sorts of Fairy Tales that help Emma figure out each week's episode (erm, more or less).

Back to Mary Margaret, poor girl, supposedly, killed someone and the evil queen--erm, mayor--wants her dead. Emma moves in and takes over the position as town sheriff and has to incarcerate Mary Margaret....

Fast forward to two weeks ago, which was the first one I saw, Mary Margaret is, apparently, Snow White, and out to kill the Regina (played by Lana Parrilla), who is her evil queen stepmother/Regina the mayor of Storybrooke, who "banished all storybook characters to our world"--and Rumplestilskin(AKA Mr. Gold--played by Played by Robert Carlyle) is her lawyer. Oh, yes. I can already see where this trial's going to go, can't you?

Anyway.... I won't give you a spoiler for last week, but let's just say what happened at the end, had Emma out searching Storybrooke after dark, when she runs into...the Mad Hatter.

(Yeah, they're really playing with the "fairytale" definition. Never mind). I'm a huge fan of the book Alice in Wonderland, so I'll forgive them. :) Anyway, Emma runs into the Mad Hatter, he kidnaps Emma and insists she make him a magic hat that'll work to get him back to Wonderland and his daughter. So! Poor Emma, who has no idea how to work any kind of magic is forced to try to make this hat, meanwhile learning a little bit more about the wacko who's kidnapped her (he had a daughter, whom Regina tricked him into leaving behind in order to take her to Wonderland--and left him there) and now, somehow he got to Storybrooke.

There's a lot lacking in network television these days, but this show's pretty darned good, enough for me to say I'm getting hooked, even after only two episodes (which of course I hope this doesn't mean it's about to be canceled--like Terra Nova was last year *sigh*).

Anyway, it's a pretty darned cool show. If you'd like to see the Mad Hatter episode, "Hat Trick" it's still up on the ABC site , if you'd like to see it, it's here. In fact, the whole series is up on the Once Upon a Time website. The next episode is on tonight (Sunday at 8PM).

Have you seen Once Upon A Time? What do you think of it?

A writer's take on SOPA

Cross posting, sorry...just want to make sure it gets seen. ;)

I'm sure you can't go anywhere online today without seeing the blacked out sites. Rather than blocking ourselves out, however, shouldn't we be discussing this subject?

As an artist, I have mixed feelings about this. Ya!!! for being down on pirates, but... a lot of sites and artists offer their stuff up for free (ya!! to them for being aware of the fact that not everyone's last name is Rockefeller). See that lil ole sexy security guard I have hanging out on my writing site? here. That came from a Free to Use (for certain terms of use) stock photo and art site called Freedigitalphotos.net. And its terms stated, yep, it could be used, so there he is to look all sexy and hot and catch any bad guys that slip past my guardian dragons. *weg* In fact its tou states: This royalty free image, "Security", can be used in corporate, personal, charitable and educational projects: it may be used in web design, printed media, advertising, book covers and pages, music artwork, software applications and much more. For more information please read our terms of use.

I figure being a selling writer falls me under the corporate thing although technically at the moment, I'm hosting and selling other folks. So either way, I'm good with regards to that babe above.

There's also a FTU section of Dreamstime.com (which is where my gravitar fox came from), and various other FTU sites and artists. Gods bless these sites for having the artists willing to, basically, share their art and photos with the world for things like, websites, book covers for, you know, books that'll end up for sale, and other sundry uses. I've watched the FTU/PTU (pay to use) image use debate for a long time, in the Paint Shop Pro community and I always, always try to find the terms of use on pictures I display for that reason. When in doubt I often don't use it. (Like mama always says, "When in doubt, throw it out!")

(Curious about this subject? You can read about it on sites like Copyright Corner and Bel's Safe Graphics School. The terms for use on art under pay to use art sites like MPT, CILM, AMI, Up Your Art, and the like usually go something like this: buy the tube for a nominal fee, and certain restrictions apply--usually that the art is *not* allowed to be used to make a profit--like for a book cover or a graphic on an author website. So you're paying to use it for personal use only (like making an wallpaper for yourself that you won't share with anyone else--possibly icons but again, I think putting them on an author site violates those tou, so I avoid it).

So, no buying and downloading the pic and putting it on your professional site or a book cover. No taking that cute half-naked guy you spotted on the web and posting his pic for a bit of eye candy. Think you can claim fair use exists? Not hardly. Not the way so many on the net think. (I could tell you a story about that that goes back decades, but I don't have the space).

What bothers me most about this SOPA thing, I think, is that I wonder how they will note those sites that use FTU/Free for Commercial use stock art, legitimately, in their "block out" logs. I'm thinking the artists and website owners who use them will have to prove the TOUs of said pic or poem or what-have-you after the fact. So I'm supporting this, on the one hand for myself and my writer friends who've been struck by book pirates, but for the users who know about and follow TOUs, to the letter? Not so much. I'm a little worried this is going to hurt them too because this SoPA thing might cover all in one big wet blanket and put the burden of proof on us, the users.

We could debate all day what constitutes copyright infringement and what doesn't, so I don't see that there's a middle ground in this debate. On the one hand, I thank the authors and artist who offer up their works FTU, on the other hand, heck, no one wants to be a thief, right? And certainly we don't want the government to make that decision for us. So what do you do? Damned if you do, damned if you don't? But happily, I found a ground of artists who seem to agree. Don't know what I'm talking about? Check out this site: An open letter to Washington from Artists and Creators.

(For the reviewers, I don't think posting book covers as part of reviews falls under this block out thing, not that I've heard, anyway. If I hear anything otherwise I'll share it, or if you hear anything otherwise, I'd be curious to know.)

So for whatever good it'll do, that's my three cents.Whatever side of this debate you're on, I wish you all the freedom make that choice for yourselves. blog BUY JULI'S BOOKS NOW AT AMAZON

Book related music--Alice in Wonderland

I know at least one of my Blogger friends might know the answer to this...so, please point me in the right direction....

I'm looking for songs related to Alice In Wonderland, rock, preferably. See, I've been on an Alice kick recently (some of you know why)and it's bleeding over into my music collection--or searching thereof, anyway.

Right now, I have two songs that I can think of "Go Ask Alice" by Jefferson Airplane (one of dad's favorites)

and "Alice" by Stevie Nicks.

There are more out there, aren't there? I might even have some (though I don't think the Sisters of Mercy song "Alice" counts) and I'm pouring through my records trying to figure this out. It's driving me nuts. Help save my sanity....

A classic feud

Again, I'm sorry for falling behind. I have had so much on my mind lately, and trying desperately to get anything finished to review, the blogging part's kinda been lost. But I did find an interesting tidbit to share--well, it's interesting to me as I studied his work in college. Who? John Steinbeck. Yeah, yeah, Classics, I know. Don't groan; I love them. Anyway, there was a news story up today about him, and I thought I'd share it with you.

Steinbecks lose copyright feud.

Of course, not a happy story, but I found it interesting.

Tired return

I had no time to do anything the last few days, but I did get some reading done, at least. You'd not believe how many I'm reading at once. LOL I've never been too fast a reader, but I'm speed reading now, boy, let me tell ya!

As for the writing thing...well, same there: I've been so tired today, after our Universal trip yesterday, that I've not really done any. Have been thinking about it, though. Trying to figure out how to work the major climax, now that the original ending doesn't seem to fit anymore.

Someone once called me the queen of resurrecting characters, so ;) I'll figure it out.

And I got one more article out for the week, for whatever's it's worth. I hope to have finished up at least one of these books for next week, and after that, we'll see what happens.

In fangirl news, I'm still kicking myself for forgetting Stargate's been on around here again. *grr* I hope I don't forget again between now and Sunday night!

Found this neat story about deceptive social behavior. Sort of Pavlov meets Asimov?
For Evolving Robots, Deception is in the genes.

Cool, huh?
