Summer Solstice #WitchBlogWed #SummerSolstice #litha #bloggerblast

Summer solstice, aka Litha, is here once again.. I don't know about you, but I feel like it started weeks ago. (In fact, I was talking to my current narrator, yesterday, who lives in Britain, and she said they're sweltering too!). Since starting to follow the "Wheel of the year" the official holi-dates have always posed a conundrum.

(Word of the day: Conundrum! I've used it twice already this morning.)

There's the official belief that the cold/heat doesn't go away/get started until certain dates, that just don't jibe with the reality of the good ole south. (Or to be honest, the modern "We've screwed up our environment" world). Nonetheless, remember, the solstice marks the tilt of the earth toward/away from the sun, so whatever the official weather (1 million degrees or just 90) the energy of the day is evident and important. The flowers are sweltering er, blooming. If you can't stand a bonfire right now (who could?) there are other ways to honor the day.  in lieu of a fire, you could light a yellow, or red candle for your ritual.

For a fire-less version (and hey, don't knock easy ;)), you can go sit outside and take in nature (don't forget your sunscreen!). Maybe pour a  libation to the summer gods--of some iced tea, maybe?

Putting a few ice cubes in your plants to give them (and/or the landwights and faeries!) a break from the heat Personally, I'd think of doing this after sundown. My dad always watered plants after dusk. they hold the moisture better, he said.

It's also a new moon, this solstice so that gives you a bit of opposites to reflect on (the height of summer, being the darkest moon--there's irony for you!)

And you could pop over to Eternal Haunted Summer and check out the latest issue of the zine for some solstice reading. :)

For me, I'm inside with the A/C blasting and, as ever, finishing up a new book that should've been out by now (stay tuned!). :)

Whatever you plan to do for the day, reading, beaching, listening to your favorite "summery songs" or watching your favorite summer movie, or bonfire-ing in the heat, I wish you all a blessed Summer Solstice (and a stormless summer!)

Beltane 2017 #MayDay2017 #Beltane #Mondayblogs

Queen Guinevere's Maying by John Collier, 1900

Blessed Beltane, my friends. May your early summer be merry, productive, and mild. I love this painting.  It reminds me of the "Lusty Month of May" song/scene in the Musical Camelot.

For us here, it's already warm  (it was 93° yesterday, y'all!). But yesterday morning, it wasn't too bad to keep out of the garden. Not a bad way to commemorate Beltane eve, honoring Blodeuwedd and Flora. :)  I cleared out some of the (very) dead flowers and added some new pretties. Unfortunately, not Hawthorne, (I don't even think I've ever seen that in our local nurseries!) I did bring home some purple flowers--bugleweed and Mexican heather.

Bugleweed
Ajuga reptans

Yes, lo and behold, I was able to pick up something with a magickal use at a local nursery. It's not every day that happens. :) I haven't found much about it beyond a few simple mentions around the web, (that it might be horehound [which, since Cunningham doesn't mention the name "bugleweed" at all, I'm not total certain of], that it's associated with Venus, and love and beauty) but I'm still looking. I'm a happy little pagan today.

For the week, I'll be babying them a bit and as for writing, I plan to finish the follow up to Druid Warrior's Heart and get it off to my editor soon-like.

(Oh, and if you're interested, the spring-return-related PNR Passion's Sacred Dance is on sale for one more day!)

For now, though, may your Beltane be mild and joyful! :)

Youtube babble and favorite Youtubers #amwriting #blogs #BloggersBlast #pagan #favorites

Speaking of Youtube (which I brought up here this weekend), with the weather getting... (nigh unbearable) warmer again, I might make a few more vlogs this year. That was on my Bloggiesta list, too but I didn't get a chance to fit them in. We'll see how that goes. The Pagan Youtube Challenge is on again but it's focused on a topic that, well, I already covered so I bowed out. I thought about the new challenge, but, nah.  (First of all, I can't even find the damned thing, right now, to link it up for you, so that seems a sign from Themselves, as ever, to stay out of it.

But, I've been watching quite a few channels lately, I find myself pulled toward the pagan/tarot ones, more than anything. I particularly enjoy Tarot by Arwen. Arwen's videos are always fun. I enjoyed her interview with Joey Morris of Starry Eyed Pagan.

And of course, on Youtube and instagram, I've been watching out for Ethony's Spreads. She's got a new one up, her, new moon in Aries spread. (Although, I hate to do it, but a quick search of google tells me to correct one of her opening lines. Ares and Aries aren't related at all, so says this article in Gods-and-monsters.com . I knew that didn't sound right. (Sorry, Ethony. *cringe*)

Then there's my new latest stalk (er, subscription): New Aged Hipster. And, as I mentioned above, Starry Eyed Pagan also, Itty Bitty Celtic Witch, and obviously, The Sea Priestess. I like her monthly tarot blogs too. (ah, there's the challenge!) For Non pagan stuff, Orna Ross. Some of her videos are informative and...well, I just enjoy most of what I've watched. I really love Ted Forbes' The Art of Photography. (yes, his Nobody cares About Your Photography video went viral, no it's not about what you think it's about. He titled poorly. Words mean things. The Work that Matters and Creative Doubt videos are  even better). But his videos are fantastic. So inspiring!

Okay, back onto the subject. I may (or may not) make a few more videos this year. We will just have to see. As ever, writing comes first. I've got a couple writing related biz things to tackle this week, for HOUSE OF DARK ENVY so for now, I'll let you out of here. :) (Maybe I should put them down for CampNanowrimo--which I probably won't be participating in this April, but still). That's what's on my Youtube and "thinking about doing" list, this week.

How about y'all? Got any favorite Youtube channels? Have a good week, everyone!

Sunday morning March 26: Bloggeista fail. #amwriting #blogs #BloggersBlast #SundayBlogShare

blog banner, Sunday Post blog banner, author Juli D. Revezzo's blog, paranormal romance author, fantasy author, pagan paranormal author

Sunday Post was conceived by Kimberly at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Good morning, all. How are you? I'm just up, but thinking about...stuff. Thunder Brain, a friend of mine calls it. I've been having dreams of some lost family members this week. Very strange. (Strange that it happened more than once, not strange dreams.) I don't know what they mean except that the boys are checking in on me, but it's always welcome.

All right, for my non-pagan readers, I think that's all the woo stuff right now (I don't know about you, but I just discovered that word "woo-woo", via the tarot blog/youtube community, and I kind of like it).

So, what did y'all do this week? I tried to participate in Bloggeista, but didn't get as much done as I'd hoped. Though, in my defense, I did look at the behind the scenes things that were bothering me (didn't find my solution yet, but I'm working on it) and I made a comment or two on the Twitter chat. So there is a little half tick on the list.

I also had some pictures on the camera that I meant to, well, get off the camera and haven't done that yet either. What's keeping me from all this? Well, I have something important to get out to a *cough* audiobook editor *cough 😇* so my computer time went to that. (Stay tuned [via my mailing list, here, or you can follow me at Amazon] or stay tuned to the blog or my site.). More on *cough*audiobook*cough* in the near future!)

I had lunch with my writing ladies, too, and that's always something I look forward to. We plan and plot a lot, and that's always fun. It's nice to get into a new environment every once in a while, too. Shakes the cobwebs out of ye ole brain, don't you know! 😉

The rest of the week was filled up with, you guessed it, working on writing and of course, mucking around on Twitter. I'm just about ready to send a certain other story off to a last *fingers crossed* polish reader, so we'll see. I would've done it already but that Thunder Brain of mine decided, "Wait!! do this first". *sigh* Oh well. Now, we wait and work on something else. Again, more on that soon.

What'd I read this week?
Progressed in Rules for a Proper Governess by Jennifer Ashley and Grace Unbound by Suzanne G. Rogers. Finished a book on Social Media. Didn't think much of that one, oh well.

Also, if you missed it, here's what I blogged about this week:
How my family deals with my writing.
Yeah, a whole lot, I know. Maybe next week will be better.

So that's been my week! How was yours? Good, I hope. Now, please excuse me, won't you?  I need to get some more coffee, and try to schedule up some posts. :)

before it gets too late...

I wanted to pop in here and wish you all a happy Valentine's Day, in however and with whoever you celebrate it. For myself, yes my hubby and I celebrate.  But also, it's a bit of an ancestor day. One of my grands was born on Valentine's Day. So, along with the usual hearts and flowers, there's a moment or two of good ole libations to be done.

So between that and Facebook events, editing, and such I didn't want to neglect to wish you all a good one!

See that little swatch of green knitting? I had hoped to knit a Brighid doll by now...ee-yeah. As you can see, it didn't work out. But My Lady is kind-hearted. She sent me a new story idea overnight. So, we're good. It's a little late, but we're still on the day, so....wishing you all Brighid's blessings this fine Imbolc! May you all have a peaceful, and productive, early spring. All Hail Brighid!

Planning--a writer's writing life #indie #authorhelp #IndieAuthors #mondayblogs #mondaymotivation

Good morning Hey look, she's done something new? What is that, you ask? Scheduled a post!

I know, breathe. The shock will wear off in a moment. :) Yes, I know, I should schedule more of these ahead of time. Most of the time, however, I can't. I have this idea in my head that, if I'm going to update you on my writing/non-writing life, what if I post a post and then, something important comes up? Do I bombard you, my loyal readers, with another post? Edit the last? Eek!

Yes, I know, silly rationale, but there it is. If the last six months is any indication, you'd think I'd just know to bite the bullet, write the darned post, and schedule it. I mean really, what does it matter when a babbly post goes live? That's my plan for the year, blogwise: try to schedule a few more of these for posting at later dates.

So what's been on my mind this week? Mostly trying to catch up. I have investigated the whole planner craze, even have one (see?), but I can't seem to keep it in my hand.
planner belonging to Juli D. Revezzo, photo by Juli D. Revezzo

Let's face it, I'm an indie author and an occasional blogger. Aside from promotional stuff (blog tours, blog posts, the rare Facebook event, daily tweeting, an Instagram post, or a reminder to get a darned vlog posted, here and there) there's not a whole heck of a lot to write down on the ole schedule.  In fact,*thinks* most stuff I do I can pre-schedule to go live at any given point. (If I remember to get off my duff and actually write them up here before the day I intend them to go live). But since I do have a planner, I'll try to get better using it.

After all, I enjoy looking at the new calendars and I always seem to have a plan as to which one I want when I buy them after Christmas. The problem with buying them after Christmas is invariably you have to set your heart on a few different ones, just in case someone snaps up the one you really want. I've never really been disappointed though;there's always something to pick from.

This year, everyone and their mom are collecting and showing off planners.Even those of us who work at home, writing. I myself like the look of Danielle LaPorte's (except for that price tag: sit down for this--$44). I've even seen some that are (yeah, you should sit down for this one.) $60.

WHAT??? Now don't get me wrong, they're pretty, and I really like Danielle's site, but that's a wee bit too rich for my blood. I've  considered making my own (because you know, expense). It wouldn't be that hard if you know how to use a pencil, ruler, some stickers, I think... but...you know what?
I got that  teeny one on sale at Walmart and a stack of blank books (which I go through like water) for... wait for it....

$10 total. (you can see I paid less than $3 for the planner above). It doesn't have slots (that I can see) to add more pages, but...*shrugs* I don't know about you, but as most of my day consists of sitting in front of my computer, tapping out new stories [or edits for ones already in progress] or emails to various colleagues and bloggers (see above), and, heck, let's face it, being an indie, even my deadlines are fluid... to invest more than that seems pointless. I can't figure out why I (an indie author) should add another blank-ish book to the pile, on top of my notebooks, journals (where I more often than not just write out what tarot card I pulled that day [an ongoing process, even though Lady of the Tarot has already seen release], or my phone.* Sure, I like having a calendar where I can write down birthdays, anniversaries, and what few appointments I have on what dates (anyone want to talk about that? I have a  few semi-new witchy novels out!), and when I sent my latest manuscript in the Celtic Stewards Chronicles off to various editorial rounds), but a book sized calendar? I've never bought one that I've actually ended up using all the way through. However, never say never. Maybe this year I will utilize that whole planner.

Speaking of planners and inserts and so forth, Love From Mim gave out a freebie blank Monthly planner page. Mine looks like this:

Month at a glance by Mim

Yessiree, I live a pretty darned exciting life, don't I? *lol* (I wonder if I can moosh that page down to make it fit in my Blue Sky planner....probably not)

For those of you who work mainly at home (like us writers), have you been sold on planners? Why? And more importantly, how do you use them?

Planning--a writer's writing life http://bit.ly/2jmuTQP #indie #authorhelp #IndieAuthors #mondayblogs #mondaymotivation Tweet this!

*which, actually, I don't like as much as I like writing in a blank book.

Autumnal Equinox--Honoring the darkness

Honoring the darkness

spiritual meaning of autumn equinox, autumnal equinox, magic of equinox, autumn equinox traditions, celebrating the equinox, autumn countryside picture by Juli D. Revezzo

Today is the Autumnal equinox (or Mabon as it's sometimes known) and with it comes what most in the pagan community think of as the dark end of the year.

(And don’t you just love the word Autumnal? It’s so much more lyrical and poetic than “Fall”, don’t you think? Especially in our part of the world where the leaves don’t actually change colors and fall off the trees until—if at all—November).

But I digress. In ancient days the approach of the dark half of the year struck dread into the hearts of our ancestors—the sun was dying, in their view, after all. With the advent of modern society, “the death of the sun” doesn’t bother us quite so much. In fact, we do tend to look forward to the lower temperatures and the change from shorts to sweaters; which seems a time of rejoice for the knitters who can start planning that autumn wardrobe (at least in some parts of the world *points  designers to that 90 degrees on the temperature gauge*--come on winter!) ahem...

But there is another phenomena tied to the “dark half of the year”.

Let’s face it, this year has been an incredibly, erm, shall we say aggravating one? Just step onto Facebook or Twitter for five minutes and you can’t help but be thwacked in the face with indignation and strife. I’m looking forward to autumn, not just for the idea of getting the freakin’ election behind us, but hoping that with the change in seasons, moods will change too.

They do tend to, around this time of year, to an inward focus. I think some of us in the pagan community are more sensitive to it. I hear many witches refer to it and to being able to sense the wild hunt in full swing. Even those in the tarot community speak of changing to “darker” decks this time of year (I’ve found myself using one with a bit of a heavier vibe the last few weeks: The Fenestra tarot). Some of us find we’re inundated with stuff that ain’t too sunshiny and rainbows and for those I send hugs. You’ll get through this, you always do.

So with the darkness folding itself out for us starting today, how does one weather it? Simple. Honor the darkness. It comes, and thankfully here in the modern world, we’ve come to realize (with apologies to my friends in colder climes) it goes just as quickly.

How does one honor it?  That’s a personal choice. Of course you can pull out the harvest decorations, the pumpkins and cornstalks (personally, I usually keep those for a little later in the autumn). Sometimes, you’ll hear people refer to this being the time of the harvest, so try to harvest the good life’s given you this year, and like any good farmer, throw the gunk on the dung heap.

Also, giving yourself a break isn’t a bad idea. Stop. Breathe, and repeat. Shut off the Internet if necessary, get a cup of spiced tea, pick a good book,  (of course, I have a *cough* thought on some titles for you ;)), and hunker down. Hey, if you like you can even put on some fall like music. (Vivaldi has a symphony for that! And Loreena McKennit's Mummer's Dance and All Hallow's Eve is always good).  If you like, you can bake some apples, or apple pie. Or if you want to pamper yourself,  pick an autumnal color of nail polish and paint your fingers and toes! :) But whatever you do,  don’t lose your cool over stupid shit. Let the aggravation go. Take a breather, be nice to each other.

That’s what I intend to do. Breathe, let it go, repeat.

May your autumn harvest be full of happiness, warm sweaters, (or light jackets if it suits), and magic!

Review: Vigil for the Bulls (The Poseidon Liturgical Year Project part 1) by Jolene Dawe.

cover art for Vigil of The Bulls by Jolene Dawe, pagan essays, Greek Mythology
Vigil of the Bulls by Jolene Dawe covers the author’s struggle to integrate in some way another aspect of the Greek god Poseidon that one doesn’t hear spoken of often: his care for bulls. These days, people don’t think of them except as comic caricatures, (I’m thinking of the Bugs Bunny cartoon) or as the violent creatures publicized during the Running of the Bulls in Pamploma, Spain. Dawe takes a more sympathetic look at their ritual use, and in building (or rebuilding) her own devotion from scraps and pieces of mythology and literature, equates Poseidon’s care of their deaths as a form of devotion and, as she puts it, Holy Grief.

I must admit, I am more familiar with Mithras’ connection to bulls than Poseidon’s so I enjoyed learning about this subject. The book was a little on the short side, but if you’re interested in modern pagan worship of Poseidon, or looking for a thoughtful read on building a modern pagan ritual system, this is the book for you. I realize this was a short and sweet review, but I recommend the book for pagan readers and even if you're just a little curious about bull mythology, so do check it out! It's available on Amazon.
