A week off--and the giveaway ends #Sundayblogs #BloggersBlast

Meme hosted by Kimberley of Caffeinated Book Reviews

Hello everyone! I hope you had a nice week. We did here. What went on? Not much, really. I think my brain still had some recharging to do after releasing my newest book Frigga's Lost Army. But I managed to get some blog guest posts out, so that's something, right?

Plus, I got a little sidetracked researching mythology, so I've been reading more than...well, blogging.

In recent news, my giveaway of the LADY OF THE TAROT audiobook has ended and....I had trouble with the rafflecopter. First, it tried to end the giveaway three days ago  *smacks*. Luckily, I reset it with no trouble (note to self for the next time this happens). But when I went to pick the winners,  it insisted I use random. Okay, I got 1, got 2... and for the third?  It chose me.

Hello, Mr. Rafflecopter. Meet my little friend.

But all's well now. I just had to pick the third by hand.

So the winners are Rachel Cash, Nicole B, and Linda T.

I'll email you ladies, asap.

And if you didn't win, I still hope you'll check LADY OF THE TAROT out. :) It's awesome, but then, I know. I'm biased. *eg*

So what, if any, books did I procure this week?

None. Huh. Was too busy growling at *cough* you know who*cough* to be able to get in there to purchase anything. (Although I did peruse a book at the store that might go on the to be read pile. One Myths of the Greeks and Romans, by Michael Grant. Although the personage I was interested in, I read the entries last night, but it might be nice to have it on the shelf for later reference. Oh! I did pick up FIRES OF VESUVIUS by Mary Beard from the library. Yes, I've already started it,  why do you ask? :)

I did manage to pick up a new tarot deck, too. *rubs hands gleefully* Well, will. I'm waiting for it to come in the mail.

I am about to finish reading a novel I've had on the "slowly picking through" pile. I hope to have a review up sometime soon. I've got, maybe 20 pages to go.

Blogs from the past week...well, I didn't finish the blogs I had in mind, but there were a few:

the post about the Multi-author Book Fair
And I shared the first snippet from my novel Frigga's Lost Army

The others, I'm going to have to schedule for the coming week so be on the look out.

And... I think that's it for me, this week, otherwise it will be Monday before I get this "Sunday" post out! I hope y'all have a good week.

(or if it doesn't show up, you'll find it at the link here.)

The story I'm giving away is a secondary world fantasy about a spoiled brat prince who gets himself into some trouble and comes to the village witch for help. :))

For you Antique Magic fans, I don't want to say much and jinx myself, but something unexpected (to me, anyway) is brewing for my witches. Have a good weekend and a great Halloween!

ALL THE WOUNDS IN SHADOW – Excerpt #1

by Anise Eden

In my dream, only the crabs’ lives were in jeopardy. Mom and I chose a spot on the pier that was shaded by a nearby oak, hoping for some relief from the humid heat. The buzzing and clicking of crickets and cicadas swelled as the summer afternoon ripened.

“Hold it perfectly still, Catie,” Mom whispered. “We want them to think it’s just a strange-looking plant.”
“I’m trying.” But after an hour, my arm ached from holding the crab net steady. “Maybe the bait isn’t rotten enough to attract them.”
Mom jiggled the string with the chicken neck tied to the end, making it dance just beneath the water’s surface. “Should I pull it out so you can check it?”
“Ew, gross!” I grimaced. “No thanks. I believe you.”
Suddenly, her whole body tensed. “Look, there’s one!”
The water was green and nearly opaque with algae. Staring down, I could just make out the ghostly limbs of a blue crab swimming up toward the bait.
“Wait until he’s really absorbed in what he’s doing and then scoop him up,” she murmured. “Not too quickly, though. You don’t want to scare him.”
“Right.” Once the crab started attacking the chicken neck, I slid the net beneath him and slowly lifted it to the surface.
“You got him!” Mom jumped to her feet. “Pull him out, and let’s have a look!”
“He feels really heavy!” We exchanged smiles of victory as I raised the dripping net up to eye level.
“Oh, no,” Mom said. “It’s beautiful, a great catch. But we have to throw it back.”
“Don’t say that!” I moaned. “Why?”
“It’s a female. It’s poisonous.”
I examined the crab. She was right: it had a full, rounded apron. With a sigh, I tossed the crab back into the water. “Females aren’t poisonous, Mom, just illegal to catch. You know that.”
“Whatever you say.” Mom walked over to the edge of the pier and turned around to face me. “I have to go now. Don’t follow me.” Before I could even grasp what she was doing, she had folded her arms across her chest, closed her eyes, and tilted her stiffened body backwards into the water.
“Mom!” I leapt forward, reaching the edge of the pier just as she hit the surface with a sharp splash. Remembering my lifeguard training, I got down on my belly, lay on the wooden planks, and thrust my arm into the water. But she was already out of reach.
I grabbed the crab net and plunged the handle down towards her, but she kept her arms folded, eyes closed. “Mom, grab the handle!” I cried out, but she kept sinking. Within seconds she was nothing more than a whitish blur.
“Don’t worry! I’m coming!” Screw lifeguard training, I thought as I kicked off my shoes and prepared to go in after her. But just as I was about to dive, something dragged me backwards by the waist.
I looked down to find a man’s arm wrapped around me—a man’s arm in a blue suit jacket. A familiar voice said, “Oh no you don’t.”
“Ben, let go of me!” I struggled to free myself from his hold. Then I realized that I was yelling out loud, awake and in bed, thrashing about and wrestling with the python of sheets tangled around me. My cell phone beeped and vibrated along the surface of the bedside table as the alarm went off. Meanwhile, my heart pounded in my throat. In my mind’s eye, all I could see was my mother sinking further and further into the river.
Goddammit, I thought, vigorously rubbing the tears from my eyes. Would my dreams ever stop transforming into nightmares—reminders that I had failed to see that my mother was in crisis, that I had failed to save her[AE1] ?
I strained to hear Ben bounding up the stairs to see what the yelling was about, but there was only silence. Had I only cried out in my dream? “Ben?” I called, loudly enough for him to hear me if he was awake. Still no response.
So he was still asleep. That was odd. Ben told me he’d never lost the early-riser habit he had developed in the Marine Corps. I turned off my cell phone alarm, put on my robe and slippers, and padded down the stairs. But he wasn’t on the sofa, where I’d left him the night before. In fact, he was nowhere.
I scanned the first floor of my tiny row house and found a note he’d left on the coffee table. “Had to go in early. See you at work. Bring a bag packed for a few days.”
Well, that’s cryptic, I thought as a bud of irritation formed. I flopped down on the couch and breathed slowly, trying to bring my heart rate back down to normal after the dream I’d had. “Bring a bag packed for a few days.” But packed for what? Given how focused he was on my training, I somehow doubted that Ben was planning a romantic getaway.
I tried Ben’s cell. No answer. I tried Pete’s cell. Again, no answer. Whatever was happening at the office, it must have been keeping them both occupied.
At least I had another way to find out what was going on with Ben. I sat cross-legged on the couch. With my hands resting on my knees, I closed my eyes and took a few slow, deep breaths. Then I pictured the filament of light that connected my heart to Ben’s, and focused my mind.
In an instant, the psychic portal between us opened. As my consciousness reached out and touched his, I fell back against the couch, struck by the intensity of his emotions. He was worried about something or someone, and there was a definite sense of urgency. Still, there was no actual fear. That told me that while some kind of crisis was going on, at least Ben was safe.
Then his feelings for me crashed through the portal, flooding me. Whatever else he was dealing with, I was on his mind. Once again I was overwhelmed by the strength of his feelings. Although I knew the portal only flowed one way, I tried to send my own feelings back in his direction. I pulled my consciousness back into my body and opened my eyes.
My gaze immediately settled upon my right hand, and the exquisite ring Ben had given me the day before. The gold band was carved to look like two birds in flight, holding a luminous round piece of Scottish agate with their beaks and the tips of their wings. He’d wanted to give me something concrete to remind me of how he felt about me when he wasn’t there, to reassure me when I had worries or doubts. A soft warmth bloomed in my chest as I twirled the ring slowly around my finger, admiring its craftsmanship. We’d agreed that I would decide when to tell people that the ring was from him—and that we were dating. In the meantime, we were keeping both things a secret. I wasn’t quite ready to go public with our new relationship, and Ben didn’t want me to feel any pressure.
As I went upstairs and laid my suitcase open on the bed, I thought about my disturbing dream. My mother’s fall into the water was obviously a reference to her suicide three months before. But the poisonous female crab? And Ben stopping me from saving someone’s life? I knew he didn’t like it when I put myself in danger, but he’d never just let someone drown.
Then again, maybe there’s nothing to decipher, I told myself. Sometimes a dream is just a dream. I tried to content myself with that thought as I showered, dressed, and packed in a hurry. I was anxious to get to the office and find out where we were going—and what crisis had made Ben leave that morning without so much as giving me a kiss good-bye.

[AE1]Added this paragraph because without this context, I think readers who haven’t read the first book will be left scratching their heads about a lot of Cate’s emotional reactions to things later in the book.

Excerpt

 “What are
you doing?” I manage to get out around my laughs. She tenses at my words and
then tilts her head back to fix me with a glare, her eyes blazing with
irritation.

“I’m
sleeping in the bath like I said I would. Why, what did you think I was doing?
Teaching myself to swim?”

“I
know what you’re doing. I think that’s obvious. What I meant was why are you doing this?” I step into the
room and move in front of her so she doesn’t have to crane her neck to see me.

“You
know why.”

“You’re
not sleeping in here, Stripes.”

“Watch
me.”

I
cross my arms. There’s no way I’m going back to bed and allowing her to sleep
in a bath. The only problem is that it’s hard to maintain a frustrated
expression when everything about the situation is so damn funny. “Be back in a
second.”

She
mumbles something that sounds like “I’m not going anywhere” to my back as I
rush out of the bathroom. Rummaging in my drawer, I find what I’m looking for
then I’m back in the room with Neve in seconds.

Before
she can react, I have a camera in front of me.

“Smile,”
I tease, only it causes her glower to darken. Three lines appear on her
forehead as her face screws up.

“Delete
that now.”

“Nope.
Get out of the bath and I might let you.”

“I’m
not getting out. I told you I’m sleeping here.”

“Why
all the drama? We’ve slept in the same bed for ages now. It’s not a big deal.”
She rolls over, showing me her back, and ignores me. “Stripes, get out of the
bath.”

“Night,
Blake.”

If
she thinks I’m going to give up that easy, she’s got another surprise coming.
She should know by now that I don’t give up and people don’t say no to me. I
put the camera on the counter by the sink, needing both of my hands.

Carefully,
so as not to reveal my intentions, I lean over the bath and line up my hands.
With one swift motion, I grip her tightly, heaving her out of the tub and
throwing her over my shoulder as she screams, “Put me down, Blake!”

“I
told you, you’re not sleeping in a bath. Now shut up and stop hitting my back.”
My light and jovial words only serve to make her flail around even more. I
manage to pin her legs, but I’m powerless to do anything to stop her hands pounding
against my back. It’s not enough to hurt, that’s not her intention, but the
squirming is becoming increasingly frustrating.

When
I reach the bed, I drag her back over my shoulder and dump her on the mattress.
She bounces, not able to hide the laughter on her face while she stares at me
and hiccups. This is how I like to see her, carefree and happy. It’s rare
nowadays that I catch a glimpse of Neve when she’s truly happy, but in this
moment there isn’t a strained muscle in her body. It’s natural, and I can’t
stop myself from watching her. I’m still amazed that I’m the one who can bring
out her joy and it baffles me that she’s allowed herself to be mine.

We
remain gazing at each other with ridiculous grins for a minute. When I’m sure
she isn’t going to run, I move around to my of the bed side. Her head follows
me, and when I go to climb in beside her, she rolls over. She throws her arms
and legs out wide, taking up the entire mattress.

You’re in the bath then.” She points at
the door with the hand furthest away from me, a devilish twinkle in her eyes.
It takes me a while to respond. The sight of her body stretched out in her
skimpy pyjamas makes my throat dry, and I have to consciously remind myself to
swallow. My gaze focuses on her pale skin, which is exposed by her shirt riding
up and the top of her shorts lowering as a result of her actions.

“I
don’t think so.” My voice comes out more breathless than I expect as I watch
her spread out in front of me.

“Well,
you’re not sleeping in here with me.”

“My
bed, my rules.” I place one knee on the mattress and climb on. My arms support
most of my weight so my body is directly above hers. “So, I can either sleep on
the left … or on top of you.” My voice drops into a murmur and she gulps, her
lips parting as I hover over her. “Take your pick, Stripes.”

Remembering Raven by Lacey EdwardsChapter One

“Now remember to contact me if you need me,” Raven LeClaire said to her latest reading client.

“I so appreciate that, Ms. Raven,” Aimee said effusively as they hugged. “It just makes me feel so much better knowing that you’re here for me!”

“I want to be here for you, Aimee,” Raven replied. “Now you go get busy with what you need to do. Don’t be afraid. You will be able to pull this off with no problem.”

Raven walked Aimee to the front door of the shop and gave her a final encouraging smile. Then she watched the young woman as she walked with a determined gait down the busy sidewalk through the throng of people.

Yes, Aimee can do this as long she keeps up her determination.

Finally turning away from the window, she walked back to join her friend and business partner Allegra Canelle at the front counter.

“So, were you able to help her?” Allegra asked.

“Yeah, I think so,” Raven nodded. “As long as she keeps her determined spirit, she will prove to her boss that she is more than ready for this promotion over that newer guy working at the firm. Aimee’s doing all the right things so far. She just needs to push it a little harder. That guy she’s up against for promotion really isn’t ready to take on all of this responsibility. Sometimes that good old boys network still raises its ugly head. But she can beat it.”

“That’s good to hear,” Allegra smiled. “Anytime you are right in a reading, our business skyrockets.”

“Well, you know what they say about word of mouth advertising,” Raven laughed. “I suppose you are heading out with your mystery man tonight?”

“Of course,” Allegra said as she tossed her mane of auburn hair coyly. “I can’t explain it, Raven. But I have such a connection with this guy! He makes me feel everything that all of those bodice ripper romances talk about.”

“Really,” Raven stated dubiously. “You have said that in the past, you know.”

“Yes, yes,” Allegra said dismissively. “I’m well aware of how I have behaved with men in the past. But I’m telling you, Raven, this guy is truly different.”

“Well, then, I can’t wait to meet the man that has turned my friend around when it comes to serious romances.”

“You will meet him, I promise,” Allegra said as she raised her hand as if swearing what she said to be the truth.

“Can’t you at least tell me his name?” Raven inquired.

“I suppose that telling you his first name wouldn’t hurt anything,” Allegra said hesitantly. “Ok, his name is Philippe.”

“Wow,” Raven said as she raised an eyebrow. “That’s quite a fancy name he has!”

“Don’t you start!” Allegra exclaimed. “You were the one that wanted to know his name!”

“I know, I know,” Raven laughed. “I was just teasing you. It really is a very nice name.”

“Well, that’s all the information you’re getting on him for now.”

“So tell me,” Raven leaned into to Allegra. “Does he dress French?”

“Stop it!” Allegra exclaimed as she swatted a hand at Raven.

There was no way to know how long this discussion would have lasted if the little bell above the shop door had not tinkled just then to announce the arrival of a customer. They both turned to greet the new arrival and saw that it was Sabine LaPointe, the lovely new client that had come to see Raven only a few short weeks ago.

She looked just as lovely as she had the first time Raven had done a reading for her. Her dark hair was once more in long braid that hung provocatively over one shoulder and her gorgeous golden brown eyes were still just as compelling. There was something different about her that Raven sensed immediately.

“Sabine!” she exclaimed. “How wonderful to see you!”

“Thank you, Raven,” Sabine replied smiling. “I was wondering if you would have time to read for me today.”

“Of course! In fact, I’ve got some free time right now if you would like!”

Raven wasn’t sure if she imagined the look of relief that crossed Sabine’s face but she chose to pretend she had not noticed.

“Yes, please,” Sabine said. “Now would be perfect!”

“Come this way, then,” Raven said as she led her to reading alcove.

Once there, she invited Sabine to sit as she lowered the drape to afford them some privacy. Then she joined her and started to shuffle the Tarot cards.

“You look as if you’re doing quite well,” Raven said as she shuffled. “Are there any particular questions or concerns that you would like to address today?”

Sabine seemed to think about her answer before delivering it.

“I took your advice, Raven,” she finally said. “I accepted the modeling job and it has been going very well so far. They’re really keeping me busy and the money is amazing! I’ve never had so much fun working. I almost feel guilty calling it work.”

Raven smiled broadly.

“I’m so happy to hear that, Sabine! See? The cards were right! Now, let’s see what they have to say about things for you today.”

Turning over the first card, Raven smiled.

“Three of Cups,” she announced. “You’ve had plenty of celebrating to do since you were here last!”

“Yes!” Sabine eagerly agreed. “I definitely have! As I said, the modeling job is perfect and, well, there have been other developments, too.”

“Oh really?” Raven teased slightly. “Well, let’s just have a look!”

Turning over another card, she smiled even brighter.

“The Sun says that you are happy in all areas of your life currently,” Raven said. “This must mean that you dealt with the new man situation. He’s going along with you on the new job, then.”

Sabine nodded somewhat shyly.

“Yes, I was worried at first that he wouldn’t support me in it, but now he seems to be fine about it all.”

“Then I am relieved for you, Sabine,” Raven said even though she was starting to feel a little shiver of apprehension.

Turning over another card, she frowned slightly.

“The Devil,” she said. “This is your card of obstacles or potentials. In this case, it might be either or both. You see, the Devil shows temptation that is bad for you. It also shows you breaking free of some type of negative bonds that have been holding you back. The advice to keep the bad from happening to you is in the next card which is the High Priestess. This card shows that you have excellent intuition and that you are aware that someone important to you has many secrets that he is keeping from you.”

“You said ‘he’. Does that mean Henri is the one keeping secrets from me?” Sabine asked worriedly.

“He very well could be, Sabine,” Raven replied. “But we knew all along that he might not be the best man for you.”

“What else do you see, Raven?” she asked.

Raven turned over another card. It was the Eight of Swords.

“The Eight of Swords tells us that you have the ability still to escape the trap that might be approaching you. But you must pay attention to your intuition. It will never steer you wrong,” Raven said.

She reached across the table and laid her hand on Sabine’s.

“You already know in your heart that something is not right,” she said intently. “You don’t have to admit to me. But you must admit it to yourself.”

“No, no,” Sabine said somewhat frantically. “I do want to tell you. I just don’t want it to be true.”

“Then, if you feel that you want to share something with me, please do.”

“Well, you know I told you that Henri has been very supportive of me in my modeling,” she began.

Raven nodded, encouraging her to continue.

Sabine took a deep breath.

“I’ve just had this feeling that he only became so cooperative when he saw how much money that I was making. I’m afraid that…that he’s been…. stealing from me.”

Raven briefly closed her eyes.

“Ok,” she said softly. “Sabine, you already know the truth and what you need to do. There is no reason to put it off now. You have this amazing career in front of you! Don’t let this piece of garbage tear you down! Stealing from you? No. You must end things, but you must not do it alone.”

“What do you mean?” Sabine inquired with a slight tremble in her voice.

“I mean have some people very nearby when you end things with Henri. I fear that he may be dangerous. Actually, when is your next out of town modeling assignment?”

“I’m to leave on Friday,” Sabine replied. “It’s for a shoot in Holland.”

“Then that’s perfect!” Raven exclaimed. “If he already knows that you’re going, then you will have the ideal opportunity to end things with him. Make sure you are not alone with him. How long will you be gone?”

“I’m not exactly sure,” she said. “At least a couple of weeks, maybe a little longer. It is a shoot for several projects. The photographer is the same one for all of them and just felt that it would save on time to do them all at once.”

“Does Henri know where you are going?”

“Not precisely,” Sabine said. “Just that I am going to Holland.”

“Ok, that’s good then. Still, I would feel a lot better if you were to keep someone with you at all times. Do you understand?”

“Yeah, I do,” Sabine sighed. “I just hate feeling like I have to be afraid of someone that I have begun to have feelings for, you know?”

“I do understand, sweetheart,” Raven said as she tried to comfort Sabine. “But the right man will come along for you and it will not be that far in the future.”

The rest of the reading was rather ordinary and, except for that niggling little feeling of apprehension, it went well. Raven hugged Sabine and walked her to the door of the shop. She continued to watch her as she walked away. When she returned to straighten up the reading table, she drew one more card on impulse regarding Sabine.

It was the Ten of Swords.

Sometimes the ghosts from your past…are real.

Moira Flynn is arrested for attacking a door-to-door solicitor with a knife. She claims a voice told her the man was intent on assaulting her. The trouble is, she was the only one that heard that voice. Moira strikes a plea bargain and is sent to a psychiatric hospital for voluntary treatment. Dr. Richard Cassano is hesitant to treat her as schizophrenic, as she does not show the standard symptoms. As their sessions progress, Moira confesses there are two voices—and they aren’t voices in her head, but the voices of ghosts. Are they imaginary? Or are they actual spirits, attached to her for reasons of their own? As Moira’s doctor uncovers more of her past, he begins to realize that her ghosts are real.
