New review for House of Dark Envy

Hi everyone. I hope you're doing well. I am writing my fingers off and will have a new book for you soon! Literally fingers off. I ended up hurting again Friday and Saturday and had to take a few days away (so no typing blog posts for me!).

I also got whacked with a little sideline research that I have no idea what I'm going to do with except that it's one of those things that may or may not be only cool to me. What, if anything, the ole muse makes out of it, only time will tell.

Grr... But the book is in it's final final pre-flight check round, and I hope to have it done... before or after July 4th.

In the meantime, I've found a great review for House of Dark Envy that I wanted to share with you.

From Twitch at Night Owl Reviews:

"I found the story between the pages to be a great read. I cannot help but like the history lessons in some of the story lines. I had no clue how the story or mystery was going to end. Overall there are great twists and turns...I would actually love to read more from this author." ~ Twitch

Cool, huh? Thanks, Twitch and everyone at Night Owl Reviews. :)

Folks, if you've read, and enjoyed the book, please leave a review at Amazon (or on your blog, or both). More are always welcome!

Saturday snaps, updates, and reading.

Sorry I have disappeared this week, guys.I've been working on three things at once and having some computer glitches. I will have a new site out shortly, and possibly a new blog link. I've also been working on a new story and reading. I've recently finished reading a new story by Jolene Dawe called Spirit Touched. It's awesome. :) You can see my little review for it on the new blog here.

And since y'all liked my picture from last week, here's another. A pretty magnolia (I think it's a magnolia), from another recent walk. I hope you like it.

Spirit Touched by Jolene Dawe

Spirit Touched by Jolene Dawe

Spirit Touched
by
Jolene Dawe

Spirit Touched: A Calenya Summoner’s Tale by Jolene Dawe is an intense Dystopian tale of a priestess left to continue the work after the gods have abandoned her people. Calenya Summoner has been brought up into this world after its “End”. The gods have left the people to deal on their own with the strange, dangerous creatures of the night.

Some have even come to worship these nasty beings as if they were the gods themselves. Calenya knows better. She  and her brethren are the only ones with the knowledge and training to use the magic which keeps these beings at bay.

But there are some who have other ideas of how to cope, by making deals with darkness. When Calenya finds a potential Summoner about to be used as a sacrifice, can she save him? You’ll have to read to find out.

Synopsis:
The world ended long ago, and most of the gods have left. Nightmares stalk the earth, and mortal creatures eke out a living the best they can, in small pockets scattered across the landscape. Only a small number of people, blessed by what few gods remain, stand between the creatures of the day and the monsters that plague the night.
Caleyna hoped for an uneventful patrol: walk the old roads, check in on villages, provide help where it was needed, and report in. Instead, there’s a swarm advancing on unsuspecting villagers, a fellow Summoner in need, and worse, her shadow has gone missing . . .

I enjoyed Spirit Touched, and couldn’t wait to find out what happened next! If I had one criticism *ducks* it was that I wanted more. 30 pages wasn’t enough of Calenya. (*gimmegimme*!) I hope that Ms. Dawe will continue the series soon-like because I’d certainly like to read the next installment in Calenya’s story! If you like dark, dystopian fantasy, especially those stories with a pagan bent, I think you will enjoy this story. If you’d like to check it out, it’s available at Amazon.

And…you can check out more about Jolene’s work at her site: https://naiadis.wordpress.com/

Brenda Strange Supernatural Mysteries series returns

So my friend and fellow author Patty G. Henderson has a new book out in her Brenda Strange Supernatural Mysteries series. I read the latest installment, PEG 'O MY HEART, recently and loved it. Brenda acquires an old-time radio and when she switches it on, an old song from the forties begins playing.
Only, as she switches through the dials, it seems to be the only song that plays and at the end, the same DJ says the same thing every time. "Dedicated to Peg".

Meanwhile, she learns that the station the radio is locked to is one that burned down at least fifty years ago! What is going on here? That's what Brenda needs to find out...before the haunted radio hypnotizes her.

I've been  a fan of Brenda Strange for a long time, and I found this to be a fine edition to the series--I'm even excited for the next. ;) Meanwhile, as the banner above says, Patty is donating a portion of the proceeds of the sale of PEG 'O MY HEART to Blind Cat Rescue inc. So if you decide to check it out, you're not only getting a good read, but also doing some good for the world. All good, no? If you'd like to check it out, PEG 'O MY HEART is available in Ebook and Paperback at Amazon.

Weekend news and reviews

Wow, is it Saturday already? This week has flown by and I've spent it...writing. (What else, oh. Well, letting my back rest [ouch!] and knitting, but that's a different post). I've  already got my first 10,000 words in for the year. Been working very hard on the sequel to Druid Warrior's Heart, while awaiting revisions for another, (and letting Mourning Dove Locket's revisions percolate). In the meantime, I found some nice reviews for Passion's Sacred Dance and Druid Warrior's Heart so I thought I'd share them. :)

This one came in earlier in the month.  The reviewer said, of DWH: “Her work is masterfully woven and absolutely delightful.”

She also had this to say about Passion's Sacred Dance:

I couldn’t put this book down. If you like breathtaking, spellbinding, intrigue, compelling characters. This is your book and you will be looking forward to many more as I am. ” Debi Allen, Amazon

Shucks! Thank you, Debi! That's so sweet. :)

And of Druid Warrior's Heart this came in from Tony.
"Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns...This could also make another great true/false historical romance movie, or mini TV series."

Wow. Wouldn't that be great? (Hey, a gal can dream)

And last but not least, this one came in yesterday for Druid Warrior's Heart at Tome Tender. Thank you, Dii!

A great start to the year. Thank you all! I've been reading a couple good books, myself: this Victorian Romance By Suzanne G. Rogers and this vampire novel, and this fantasy romance novel by Jolene Dawe. Oh, yeah. And the new Moorcock novel, when I'm not doing all that other stuff. (I don't read much, do I? ;)) Meanwhile, I'm going back to er... work. :) Have a great weekend!

I Am Legend review--#‎Octoberfrights‬ #giveaway #zombieapocalypse

I_am_legend_teaserSo every time I think of Halloween this subject comes up. What books and movies can I talk about? Well, I realize I haven't done a review in a while. So, I pulled out my favorite of the last few years: I Am Legend. Yeah, yeah. I've heard a lot of people grumble about this movie, but I loved it. So! I thought why not. I'll probably review Vincent Price's 1964 movie version, The Last Man on Earth, later, so stay tuned.
The premise of Will Smith's version of I Am Legend, the movie is  pretty much the same. Sort of.

I Am Legend starts out with a newscaster interviewing a doctor (played by Emma Thompson) announcing the cure for Cancer has been found. YAA!!!

Well, not so fast. Three years later, we're shown a New York City that's completely abandoned and in ruins, overrun by wild animals, flora and fauna. Turns out, that so-called cure launched a virus that wiped out 90% of the world's population. Only 10% survive and, as far as our main character Dr. Neville knows, only one person has survived. Himself. The others have all turned into twisted, animalistic creatures, more zombie than human. Not to give any spoilers away but he works tirelessly to create a cure for this virus and distracts himself as he can, doing everything from working out, to watching every movie the local video stores have to offer (yes, this movie was made in 2007--before the collapse of the video stores!) and listening to cds, and scouting for supplies. On said-missions around NY Neville hopes to find survivors, but all he finds...are the infected. And
animal-er-zombie-like they see him as a possible food source. EEP!

Those scenes, particularly when he must go into a dark building where the zombies (or Darkseekers, as the movie calls them) are quite harrowing. The world itself, or what it has become with only one man left walking around tending to it, actually seems *snark* less far-fetched than most End of the World set pieces. But the story itself is just riveting in my opinion. Fans of Richard Mattheson's novel complained because the movie is different from the book, and those differences are probably why it got so many bad reviews. However,  I think Will Smith and crew did a fine job and despite the differences, I loved it. The message is just great, it's the end of the world as we know it, but we'll survive, we'll fix it, and be just fine.

*And yes, in case you're wondering, both I Am Legend/Last Man on Earth did have an influence on the little zombie story I'm giving away: Bicycle Requiem. Click here to find and fill out the Rafflecopter for said-giveaway.

Games of Chance, a fantasy novel by William L. Hahn

Games of Chance by William L. HahnGAMES OF CHANCE

by

William L. Hahn

In GAMES OF CHANCE, fantasy author William L. Hahn introduces readers to a fascinating fantasy world, where chaos is about to change everything. Solemn Justice, a young wizard, joins a band of gypsies after his father's death, before finding himself on the wrong side of the law with his fate in the hands of a scholar elf; Treaman the Woodsman and his group of explorers seek adventure and find monsters instead, a King reluctantly allows his son to become ambassador to their enemies. All lead up to what very well may be the fight of their lives. With nothing less than hope as the spoils of war.

In GAMES OF CHANCE, William L. Hahn has penned an exciting epic fantasy tale of magic, myth, and mayhem that I enjoyed very much. I think it's the perfect story for fans of Tolkien and Game of Thrones. Do check it out! If you'd like to add it to your Kindles/nooks what have you, GAMES OF CHANCE is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords and in paperback. Enjoy!

And don't miss William's guest post, below. :) Enjoy!

Friday News and Reviews

News, well...There's not much news to report. I've been working on revising a novel for release, I hope in another month, but we shall see. Also, as you can see, I've had lots of fun hosting guests. I hope you haven't missed any of them. In the meantime,  another review popped up for Changeling's Crown:

"Changeling’s Crown by Juli D. Revezzo is a delightfully light fantasy romance filled with humor, an endearing heroine and a darkly fascinating hero....Fun, fast, filled with light humor, a taste of darkness and just the right touch of magic, kind of makes you forget that Ianthe DID have a job to do!"~ Di, Tome Tender

Thank you, Di! I'm pleased you enjoyed CHANGELING'S CROWN.

CHANGELINGS CROWNWhen Ianthe began her career as a faery godmother, she stumbled so badly that Snow White will probably never speak to her again.

After a long suspension, she's finally been given a chance to redeem herself...but everything on this latest assignment is going wrong.

But why?

Worse, she definitely doesn't need an attractive mortal man distracting her from her duties. Of course, needs and wants are two different things.

Briak has had his eye on Ianthe for a very, very long time, but he's been waiting for just the right moment to make his move.

Despite the fact all hell's about to break loose on his watch, he can't resist the opportunity to insert himself into her earthly assignment. Can he convince Ianthe of her true calling and thereby win her heart? Or will his subterfuge ultimately cost him her love?

Available at: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and in paperback. The ebook is a l'il ole $1.49. Enjoy and have a great weekend.

Review: Queen of the Hill by Genevieve Jack

As promised, here is my review of QUEEN OF THE HILL by Genevieve Jack.

QUEEN OF THE HILL

by Genevieve Jack

*Review copy given to me by Ms. Jack and Bewitching Book Tours.

Queen of the Hill, by Genevieve Jack, Paranormal romance, Knight Games seriesIn Genevieve Jack’s, QUEEN OF THE HILL, Grateful Knight has finally earned a little downtime, since her last battle with the vampire queen Bathory. Her own knight, Caretaker, Rick, has proposed and Grateful is gleefully (or not) planning her wedding. You’d think that would be enough stress for any gal, but then she and Rick receive a call about a murder at their friend’s business. And he’s gone missing. There’s evidence of another in his room, but the cops can’t pinpoint the third party. Nor does Grateful feel she can trust his second in command....

Things go from bad to worse when Tabetha, though she exudes a polite manner, makes it clear to Grateful that she wants not only her caretaker, but her territory. Unheard of! If that’s not enough to make the somewhat high-strung Grateful nervous, Tabetha and Rick seem to have a history that might come back to bite him. What else can it do when Rick’s in her debt for a spell that didn’t quite go the way he hoped? And somehow, Tabetha even has drawn Grateful’s friend Logan into her web.

With her distracted fiancé, a friend tied up with her enemy, a territory to run, a missing vampire, and vampire war brewing, not to mention a wedding to plan, what’s a girl to do? Will Grateful and Rick make it to the altar—alive?

You’ll have to read to find out!

I thoroughly enjoyed QUEEN OF THE HILL. Grateful is a fun little witch, even if she exudes snark now and again. I also loved her familiar, Poe. What’s not to love about a raven who can share his wisdom, even if he needs a doggie door to get inside the witch’s house? QUEEN OF THE HILL continues Genevieve Jack’s wonderful Knight Games series, but worry not. If you have not delved into it before, I think you can start here with no problem. The series continues in Ms. Jack’s new release, MOTHER MAY I, so if you’d like to check the series out, now is the time.

You can find QUEEN OF THE HILL (and the entire series) at Amazon, Kobo, Smashwords, and Itunes.

If you'd like to add QUEEN OF THE HILL to your Good Reads lists, you can do so here.

For more on the series, you can check out her site at: http://www.genevievejack.com/ and don't miss my interview with her and the lovely Grateful, below. ;) Thank you to Ms. Jack and Bewitching Book Tours for allowing me this review copy.

Christmas nails

Another holiday inspired me to try another round of nail art. For my first set, last week, I started with basic stripes in Christmas colors.
The red, green, and silver work well together I think...

Then I realized, they do look very close to the Italian flag. Not a downside as I am from an Italian heritage, but I must say it wasn't exactly my original intent. And it was, I must confess, a bit of a mess. The tape tore off some of the polish and I had to fill in the gaps. Feh. Oh, well. I'm happy with the way it came out. This is Sephora by O.P.I in "A Color that Can't be Tamed" (the silver);  Sinful Colors in Gogo Girl; and the green is a mixture of a Sinful Colors shade of green, and Pure Ice in Saddle Me Up. That brand is one of my favorites.

Are you doing any special nail art for the holiday?

Review: Journey of the Magi by Barbara Edwards

cover art by Debbie Taylor
JOURNEY of the MAGI

by

Barbara Edwards

(Published by The Wild Rose Press)

My review copy purchased at Amazon

JOURNEY OF THE MAGI by Barbara Edwards tells a slightly different Christmas tale than you might be thinking, just on a glance at the title. In this story, widowed Noel Martin shows up in a Minnesota diner seeking shelter from a winter storm. The diner’s owner, Dan Longstreet, offers she and her children a meal and a place to sleep that night. Noel piques Dan’s interest and when she asks for a job, he gives her one.

Noel has promised to get her children home to Connecticut for Christmas, and so doesn’t plan on staying in town more than a week. But something about Dan warms the widow inside and she finds herself falling in love with him. When a snowplow driver wrecks her car, she has no choice but to stay longer. Christmas is nigh, will Noel decide to accept the gift of Dan’s love, or will she keep to her plan and head off for her home, as she planned?

In JOURNEY OF THE MAGI, Barbara Edwards has penned a short, sweet Christmas novella of family and romance that moves along at a nice clip. I think fans of holiday romances will enjoy it. I know I did.

If you’d like to add Journey of the Magi to your holiday reading list, it’s available for ebook readers at The Wild Rose Press, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Itunes, Kobo, and All Romance Ebooks.

Teal blue!

Teal mani using Milani Nail Lacquer in "Mint Candy" (that's the teal) and Sinful Colors in a shade called Nova. With a top coat of "Super Dry"  (It's touted to be a cheaper version of Siche Vite) with wrapped tips.

This was for Paint it All The Colours'  Ovarian Cancer Awareness month... Well, better late than never.

That's pretty much the day I did them. But a shower later and it doesn't look so good.

This is the top coat in question.

So, yeah, try looking that one up online *sheesh*. So, the search goes on....

nails experiment--Sinful Dream On

So I always love a pretty nail color. One of my favorite colors is purple. So when I ran across Sinful Colors' Dream On I couldn't resist. When I got it home and tried it on I found out it was a matte finish.

Pretty. But since I don't have a matte top coat that pretty matte finish goes quickly by the wayside.  And with a topcoat (Sally Hansen No Chip--a more expensive polish I don't usually buy anything over $4 because it's too expensive) it looks like this:

Um, sort of. Two different cameras, and yet it's not as purple as it looks in real life. It's way more purple than that.

However, here it is after one day's wear, this is after a shower, and doing the dishes, and other things that involve washing hands--because in real life, folks my hands end up in water--and typing of course.

Remember this is with Sally Hansen's "No Chip" acrylic top coat. Less than 12 hours later. And yes, before you ask, I do do the nail wrap thing for all it does any good.

Um, so yeah. Another Polish Fail....No I had no opportunity to check the reviews on this where I got it. (There was no internet access where I was in NC) So there goes my last stretch of faith in Sally Hansen, too... However I will say the top coat worked better with some of my other polish flavors. Just not this particular one.

Passion for Vengeance by Patty G. Henderson.

Passion for Vengeance by Patty G. Henderson

Patty G. Henderson’s new Gothic Romance, Passion for Vengeance tells a tale of a family torn apart. Jane Havens,  has watched her father the illustrious Colonel Havens die, and her brother Cole slip into alcoholism, while her youngest brother Henry still needs a firm hand. She’s done all she could with the boy but needs help. When Miss Emma Stiles arrives on her doorstep, she thinks she’s found a savior in a fine dress.

There is an instant—and forbidden—attraction between the two women, but Emma comes with baggage of her own. Not all of it able to contain a wardrobe. She is a woman with a haunted past, and apparently, a grudge. She has a strange proclivity for dancing under the stars, a love for Absinthe, and also has a very odd talent. Known as sin eating she can take a person’s sin on herself, thereby erasing the dead person’s deeds and sending them off to meet their maker with a clean soul.

Because of this she feels she owes a debt to society. But her own soul isn’t completely spotless to begin with. Jane’s old, dear nursemaid thinks she knows why, especially given all the evidence against Miss Stiles. Truly, did any of the strange accidents that begin befalling the Havens family begin until Miss Stiles arrived?

Impossible! How could the woman Jane loves have anything to do with all these things?

How can she? I can’t tell. You’ll have to read Passion For Vengeance yourself. Patty’s latest Gothic is sure to please fans of lesbian romance, as well as the old Gothic Romances of the 60s and 70s. If you’d like to check it out, it’s available at Amazon for Kindle and paperback and in epub from Barnes and Noble.

The Ice Captain's Daughter by S.G. Rogers

The Ice Captain's Daughter.
 by Suzanne G. Rogers
(This book was a personal purchase)

In Best selling author Suzanne G. Rogers’ newest release, The Ice Captain’s Daughter, an historical romance, when eighteen year old Miss Jillian Roring is accosted on her way to her first “Season” in London, MacKenzie Logan comes to her aid. Learning that she is far from home, he offers the beleaguered young lady one of his guest rooms. But when Jillian’s aunt and Uncle learn she’s spent the night alone with the reputed rogue Logan, they insist the couple marry to cover up any resulting scandal.   Jillian herself is anything but blemish-free, being the daughter of the famed Ice Captain. How could Logan accept her when all London looks down on her for that? How could her family accept the scandalous Logan, when rumors swirl about the break-up of his last love affair?

But already taken with her charms, Logan agrees to the betrothal. Jillian, on the other hand, isn’t so sure this is the best of decisions, declines and goes home with her aunt and uncle. Besides, the more she learns of Logan, the more unsure Jillian becomes, Rumor is he left his ex-girlfriend to chase women, and she’s heard he and his friends have made bets on who will capture her heart first!

Well, you know how rumor is…Maybe one of the gossipers still has it out for ole Logan. For his part, Logan won’t be discouraged so easily, until Jillian can learn the truth and decide for herself. As for her attackers…where did they get off to? And what happened to Jillian’s maid, who the thief sent home to fetch her uncle and aunt? The one they say never arrived? You’ll have to read to find out.

You know, I love Ms. Rogers' stuff. This is no different. Her Regency Romance debut, The Ice Captain’s Daughter is a delightful Young Adult novella, well-researched and with some surprising elements. Coupled with Rogers’ signature hint of humor, I think her new title lends something to the sometimes stuffy genre of Regency Romance, that may hook a few younger readers to the genre. If you enjoy sweet, lighthearted romance, Suzanne G. Rogers’ The Ice Captain’s Daughter you’ll find it, as I did, for sale currently at Amazon for Kindle, for $.99.

I hear tell Ms. Rogers’ is about to release a follow-up to this delightful tale, so now would be the time to check it out.

Spirit of the Mountain by Paty Jager and sale

cover art by Nicola Martinez
Spirit of the Mountain
by
Paty Jager
(I received my review copy from author for an honest review)

I could've sworn I posted this review, but I guess not. So!

Award-winning western Romance author Paty Jager has taken a turn into fantasy romance with her latest series. The initial title in the series, Spirit of the Mountain, tells of daughter of the Nimiipuu chieftain, Wren, as she seeks and finds her weyekin (her guardian spirit), who appears to Wren as a white wolf. But the destiny her guide lays out for her isn’t one she expected or can necessarily stomach, for the Creator has dictated that she be married into an enemy tribe—the feared Blackleg tribe—who have in times past, wreaked much havoc on the peaceful Nimiipuu.

When on a stroll through her beloved mountain’s paths, Wren runs across a lovely white wolf, and thinking it her weyekin come to guide her again, begins pouring out her troubles to it, an impartial listener. But this is no guide, yet it is no ordinary wolf either. No, for it is actually the Spirit of the Mountain, Himiin. The form and duty he’s taken, though he’s proud to do it, has been given to him as a punishment by the Creator, for a death he caused a while back. So it shocks him that Wren would think to stay in his presence, let alone build a friendship with him.

Himiin’s brother and sister council and cajole him, but it’s no use. He feels he must warn her, that all might not be as it seems. He takes human form and the maiden falls as hard for him, as he has for her. Risking one passionate night, and possibly, both their futures. But how can he, a spirit, possibly build a life with Wren, a human, when his first duty is to the mountain and the Nimiipuu, and Wren’s first duty is to build peace between her tribe, and the Blackleg, through marriage to one of the schemers? And how will the Nimiipuu react when they find out the maiden they bargained for, well, isn’t quite as intact as they’d hoped? With an evil spirit on their side, will the Blackleg succeed in destroying the Nimiipuu as they wish?

You’ll have to read to find out.

Spirit of the Mountain (my reading copy of which came from Ms. Jager) gives readers a setting not usually seen in paranormal romance. Paty Jager put a lot of research into this book, and the narrative shows it in the lush settings and mannerisms of her characters. The lore and legends of these people were particularly interesting and the spirits, an interesting bunch. The only drawback to the story was the odd words and names used, but if you’re a longtime reader of fantasy and science fiction, it shouldn’t be too hard to get the hang of. There’s also a pronunciation guide on Ms. Jager’s site if one should need it. Historical notes are also included that point out the history of animosity between these two tribes. Interesting stuff!
All in all, Ms. Jager builds a clever fantasy, here, that will be touched upon again in her forthcoming follow-up, Spirit of the Lake (due out in May from The Wild Rose Press). In the meantime, if you’d like to check out Spirit of the Mountain, it is available in Ebook and paperback from The Wild Rose Press, or Barnesandnoble.com.

By the way it is going on sale for $.99 Friday (today) and stays on sale through the 30th. Enjoy!

(My review copy received from the author for honest review)

Tournament of Chance is the story of a young woman, Heather, who dreams of becoming royalty. What she doesn't expect is the biases the monarchy hold against the common folk like her, until she learns King Chance's archery tournament, the one she dreams of winning, is rigged. King Chance really has no intention of ever letting a commoner win, despite the promises he's made. Heather doesn't know that her loss will spark a revolution, and that her whole life will be spent trying to stop that revolution. Nor that it will lead her to her true love, and her biggest loss.

Because of a mishap in an enchanted cavern, her life becomes chaotic then, and thrust through time, her life is lived in bits and pieces that will have her trying to piece it back together. Her decisions will affect the entire course of her world's history.

I just finished this novel this week and enjoyed it very much. It has some very funny moments (like the one I posted earlier this week) and some that left me in tears. My honest review is that I've read so much of Ms. Rogers' work I can't help but look forward to each new title. I've come to love her work and lament she can't write faster! *laughs* So maybe I'm a little biased, but this one well, it left me in tears and cheering for Heather all the same.
