Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology ... inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Although its literary origins are sometimes associated with the cyberpunk genre, steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power.Steampunk most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them. ~Wikipedia
Ie. in layman's speak, a past that never existed sprinkled liberally with gadgets that weren't invented yet! (like *gasp* robots, computers, and cars--and sometimes--*faints* space flight).
See: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (setting? 1898) where we have.....
Yep. A car (with very futuristic-looking hubcaps!)
Anyone that says "you can't have anachronisms in steampunk" isn't paying attention. That's the whole fun of steampunk. Otherwise, you might as well just throw all the research in and call what you're doing "historical fiction".
Steampunk!
