My 10 favorite movies inspired by books #bloggersblast #writerconfessions

Here's the next in the blog prompt list I'm following.

What are my favorite movies inspired by books?

This could be a long list so I think I'll just try to come up with 10. If I can even manage that, we'll see. because Hollywood does tend to butcher and change novels, when they get hold of them, don't they?

1.Vanity Fair (2004).

This is the theatrical version of William Makepeace Thackery's novel, Vanity Fair, and though the screenwriter changed a lot, the essence of Becky and crew is still pretty much in tact.

2. Fellowship of the Ring
3. The Two Towers
4. Return of the King.

Let's face it, Peter Jackson did an awesome job with these movies. Yes, he left out the epilogue, yes there were other changes but all in all these three movies are fantastic.

5. True Grit (2010)
Ditto. While some of the best lines aren't there--or the best lines are in the movie, but not in Charles Portis' novel, it's a faithful-ish reproduction of  his book.

6. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

The movie doesn't cover everything that happens in Ann Brashares' novel, but it does a pretty good job of translating it to screen.

7. Cold Mountain (2003)

There are a few scenes that got changed, that in my mind, were actually done better in the book, but I enjoy this movie (and its book) immensely.

8. Queen of the Damned.

*I know,I know. Anne Rice hated this version but ...I think they did an okay job with it. It could've been much worse, and maybe I like it better because of the bar being lowered so far with the travesty that is Interview with the Vampire (apologies to Brad Pitt).

9. Silence of the Lambs
(Again, it's been a while since I read the novel but I seem to recall the
screenwriter did a pretty good job with it).

10. House of Mirth.
As mentioned yesterday, I lovelove Selden, and ...it was nice to see him finally on screen. It was a little more abbreviated than I wish it was (from what I remember. It's been a while since I read the book), but I think it was fairly well-done.

11. To the Lighthouse
It sort of follows what happens in the novel. I don't want to say it follows the plot because TTL is more complicated than that. It doesn't have a plot, really. But the film version takes an idea: a boy wanting to go to a lighthouse, a mother wanting the best for her children, and focuses on those, more than...the stream of consciousness form in which Woolf wrote the novel. But they did okay considering how hard it might've been to translate her words to theatrical film. Don't believe me? Watch the movie, and listen to the way Professor Mount reads the opening of the novel here.

I'd love to put Cloud Atlas on this list, but unfortunately, as many times as I've watched the movie (10?) I haven't yet (*ducks*) had a chance to read the book. My husband did and he approves, so...there? I'm also currently reading Tess of the D'Urbervilles, which had a movie back in the '70s (that I first knew about via cable); alas, I've never seen. I'm sure I'm going to want to now, despite the spoilers I found looking it up! *grr*
And those are mine. What are your favorite book-inspired movies?
