Holiday Nails

So, I hope y'all had a merry Christmas. We did here. I did some editing and some writing (almost finished a story I've been working for a year--yahoo!) I had some time to noodle around with my nail art brush before heading off to dinner and this is what resulted. This is two shades from Sinful Colors: Red is called "Go-go girl", the white is called Snow Me White (and it's a bit old so it's kinda taken on the consistency of White-Out. Go figure. ) The black is also Sinful Colors, it's from their Nail Art line and it's called (I think) Time Off.
Whatever. :) I think it came out pretty good for all that I don't have the steadiest of hands. Did you do any Christmas themed nail art this Christmas?

Uncommon Christmas

So I thought in writing my uncommon Christmas story, Murder Upon a Midnight Clear, what would be the most likely things to go along with it. Well, for me, my other love (as you must know by now) is music. I go for the unusual sometimes so I thought I might share some usual Christmas themed songs with you.

Pat Benatar:

So, yes, start you off with something pretty. Ready for the weird? Here we go!

Yule Shoot Your Eye Out by Fall Out Boy

December is for Cynics by the Matches made me laugh

This one too: blink-182 - I Won't Be Home For Christmas

Alice Cooper's version of Santa Claus is coming to Town...

;) Okay, well, maybe they tie more into my antagonist than my heroes, in Murder Upon a Midnight Clear, but...For holiday parties and mood setting when watching Bad Santa, who can go wrong with these? ;) Enjoy, ya'll!

Susan Macatee’s new historical romance

The Physician’s Irish Lady is the new historical romance novella by author Susan Macatee. Here she introduces Keara Fagan who has just arrived in America after a stint as an indentured servant in Australia. On a train to York, Philadelphia, Keara chances to faint at the feet of gallant Dr. Elliot James.

Sworn to care for the sick, Elliot can think of nothing better than to offer her a meal and shelter in his own home. But her background haunts her, and though Keara finds herself falling for Elliot, she can’t bring herself to tell him the whole truth.

The Physician’s Irish Lady is a sweet tale of two strangers meeting on a train, of the wish to do good going a little awry and yet….True love wins out in the end. Though I do wish it could’ve been a little longer–maybe because I’ve always enjoyed Susan Macatee‘s stories–I think, fans of Historical Romance, will find The Physician’s Irish Lady just as charming as I! If you’d like to check it out, the book is exclusively available at Amazon until 1/22/14 when it will be available at all e-retailers and The Wild Rose Press.

Disclosure: I got my copy of this book from Amazon.

Keara Fagan is falsely accused of insurrection against the British and sentenced to indentured servitude in Australia. The Irish native escapes on a ship bound for America with no money and the clothes on her back. Now, she must stay on the run while trying to survive in a strange land.

As Dr. Elliot James travels by train from Philadelphia to York, a young woman faints at his feet. He's sworn, as a physician, to aid the sick and injured, but fears this woman needs more than medical help. Enchanted by her beauty and touched by her dignity, he buys her a meal and offers her a place to stay in his small Pennsylvania town.

But a mysterious Irishman pursues her to the idyllic town surrounded by scenic farmland. Is he the abusive husband come to claim his runaway wife, or someone more sinister?

If you've never read her work, give it a try. I've become a fan. ;)

Linda Joyce–Introducing Biloxi Dutrey and Nick Trahan in Bayou Bound

I'm pleased to have my friend, fellow author from The Wild Rose Press, Linda Joyce, here to celebrate the cover art forthcoming release of her new book, Bayou Bound. Linda, thanks for coming.

Linda Joyce: Hi there! I am a self-appointed ambassador of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans. It’s a place steeped in magic...and may be little voodoo, too. Here’s a song that I especially love and it will set the stage for what I have next for you.

It doesn’t matter if you’re down in New Orleans, in Asia, Europe or where... Waiting for an email to pop up in your inbox is like waiting for the top of a roller coaster ride where each chug of the cars takes you higher. The thrill literally comes after you reach the top. Anticipation can be a cruel friend.

I’ve been waiting for THE email that would deliver my next book cover. Anticipation sent me to stress eating--popcorn every night. A cover release, just like a book release requires the patience of a saint. But Lord knows, I’m not one.

But it’s here now! The cover reveal for Bayou Bound, the second book in the Fleur de Lis series.

Bayou Bound by Linda Joyce, contemporary romance, Fleur de Lis series, available at Amazon
Introducing Biloxi Dutrey and Nick Trahan in Bayou Bound.

Biloxi Dutrey grounds her jet-setting photography career and returns to Mississippi when she learns her family home, Fleur De Lis, is headed for financial ruin. She plans to save it by scooping up the job of Keeper. But that means breaking tradition, and her family isn't cooperating.

Veterinarian Nick Trahan is new in town and wants folks to stop matchmaking. He won't settle for just a pretty face. He wants the perfect woman, one who believes in family and commitment—the exact opposite of his parents.

Nick rescues Biloxi during a raging storm, but the squall is tame compared to the tempest between them. Soon they experience the backlash from the long-standing feud between their families. If Biloxi surrenders her dreams for Fleur de Lis and toes the line with tradition, will she also be forced to give up on "forever love" due to the hate their families still harbor?

Release date is still unknown, but soon, very soon. Stay tuned for news of the release. I’ll be giving away lots of books!

In the meantime, if you’re behind in the story, Branna and James are waiting for you in Bayou Born.

Happy Reading!

Nice cover, dear Linda! Good luck with it, and all you do!

Chat with Hyla from Terri Rochenski’s Eye of the Soul

I walked into a local pub recently and who should I find there? well, I suppose you're never going to believe it. You know how pubs are, usually filled with questing Neanderthal heroes or adventurous wizards? Well, this time who should I happen upon but a woman on a mission from god--Hyla, the star of  Eye of the Soul--and her faithful scribe, Terri Rochenski? I know, such a sweet pair to find in such a place. I simply had to find out what their story was!

Good evening, ladies, thanks so much for joining us. Hyla, I know how important your mission is so I won't keep you long,  all right?

Hyla, you're in the middle of an epic journey. If you could've avoided it, what would you be today, you think?

Hyla: Doubtless I would still be on our island home of Taran, finishing my apprenticeship to became a Healer. I would also be alone, never having had the chance to make true friends outside my people.

Oh, well. Maybe it was a good thing this happened then? But.... we all know stuff happens, so just to be a little evil, I have to ask, what do you hope not to find at the Pool of Souls?

Hyla: I’m heading to the Pool of Souls for a reason – to find the one Native who can help our people – and gods forbid I find disappointment instead.

Yeah, I can see how that would kinda ruin your day.  What do you wish Terri hadn't revealed about you?

Hyla: My Talent, my curse. Few know what plagues me, what keeps me from making friends, for it makes me an outcast among my people.

What's your favorite bedtime story?

Hyla: I’ve never been told a bedtime story. I was orphaned upon birth, and Soroca, the woman who became my guardian, had no time – or desire – to amuse me with more than harsh words.

Awww...I'm sorry. That's so sad.  (I have this friend Terri, maybe she can help you out with that. I hear she weaves a mean bedtime story! ;)) Let's try for a happier question: Jadon or Conlin? ;)

Hyla: I’ve dreamed of love and children, but such a life is not possible because of my curse. As for the two mens’ personalities, Jadon is a womanizer and full of himself, and Conlin … I don’t know him as well, but he seems sweet and caring.

(*Takes Hyla aside* Given the two, Hyla, a bit of advice: go for the sweet and caring guy. Believe me, you might be saving yourself a  whole lot of trouble!)

Now, Ms. Terri, as Hyla's creator, I couldn't leave you out. So I have a few questions for you,  a) What inspired the Pool of Souls series?

Terri Rochenski: A trying of my own faith, patience, and identity a few years back. For the full story, you’ll need to stalk my guest posts during the EotS tour.  ;)

(The full tour list is on Terri's site here:  if you'd like to follow along, folks.)

And secondly, now that  Eye of the Soul is out, what's next for you and Hyla?

Terri:  Book #2, Secret of the Souls, is due out in Oct. of 2014. Being preoccupied with a pregnancy and now newborn, the final few chapters that need written have taken a back seat! After the completion of this manuscript, Hyla’s story comes to an end.

That should be Hyla's first thought as her people are chained and imprisoned for no imaginable reason.

Instead, Hyla finds herself traveling through a land void of Natives, with human soldiers pillaging in desperate pursuit of her, and in search of the mystical Pool of Souls—home to the one man who can save her people.

Or so she believes.

Led by her faith in the deity Fadir, Hyla is met along her journey by Jadon—a human male and fierce King's warrior, and his childhood best friend Conlin—one of the few Natives aware of his Fadir-given Talents.

Protected by Jadon, guided by Conlin, and with an unfailing belief in the purpose of her pilgrimage, Hyla carries on.

Like her, though, another searches for the Pool, and should he gain access first, everyone she loves, and everything she knows, could be lost.

Cursing her arthritic fingers, Miri squeezed out a rag and draped it over the human man’s hot forehead.

“I’ve seen a lot more harvests than you, old goat,” she muttered, lifting his eyelids. “I’m thinking you’ll never catch up either. Doubt you last another half-moon’s phase.”

Miri pushed to her feet and stretched her hunched back. A heavy sigh slipped past her wrinkled lips as she glanced around the sick house. Keeping the night watch wasn’t too bad—she’d volunteered often since her old bones wouldn’t allow much sleep.

“Joints wasted, hearing all but gone …” Miri yanked on the long white braid lying over her shoulder. “I’m the old goat.”

She shuffled down the aisle, woolen kirtle swishing in the silence. A cool, autumn breeze rustled the crimson leaves of the magnolia and palm fronds overhead, drawing her gaze upward. Violet streaks lit the pre-dawn sky.A dog barked, yipped, and fell silent.

Miri peered across the village green to the thatched buildings beyond. A shadow passed between two cottages. Another three hurried toward the neighboring dwelling.

“Sight fading or my mind, too?” Miri rubbed her watery eyes, blinked, and leaned forward. Light flickered through the palm trees behind the outlying homes.

The flames drew closer, weaving between the trunks.

Humans from the mainland? Miri’s hand clutched at her throat. Soldiers. Fadir have mercy.

The men crept through the village, taking up positions at every doorway. Two brutes, more horse-like in size than human, approached the sick house.

Sputtering torch held high, the first strode forward, dark eyes intent upon Miri. A green surcoat covered broad shoulders and fell to his thighs. The golden wheat sheaf of the city of Varosh adorned his chest.

Cold sweat beaded upon Miri’s brow. Breath burst from her lungs, and she moved back, clutching the door jam.

The second soldier stepped closer, chains and shackles clanking in his hand. He stopped two paces away from Miri, and a smile stretched his stubbled cheeks, revealing rotted teeth. “Good morning pointy-ears.”

Miri stared, heartbeat thundering in her ears. She’d been called worse in her eighty-three birth passings but never with such malice.

A single cry rang out across the village, and doors crashed inward. Screams rent the air.

“Don’t fight Native woman,” rotten-teeth sneered, shackles outstretched.

“W-why?” Miri whispered, taking a step backward.

A scowl narrowed his gaze, and his fist shot forward.

Bursts of light and pain exploded through Miri as she crumpled to the floor.

Miri’s people huddled on the village green as fall’s pale sun crested the trees. Cold metal had been clasped around their necks and ankles. Many trembled in the cool air, little more than night clothes covering their nakedness. Miri held to her braid with a white-knuckled grip, her head and its egg-sized bump throbbing in time with her pulse.

A handful of other battered Natives who had attempted flight were the last to join them, the soldiers tossing them forward like sacks of potatoes.

Sounds great doesn't it? She's included a giveaway of a signed paperback, signed bookmark, a notebook, and pen, folks so, go here to participate in the Rafflecopter Giveaway:

Thanks for being here today, Ladies! Hyla, I wish you the best on your quest, and Terri, the best with  Eye of the Soul (and  with your forthcoming WiP). About Terri:

Terri started writing stories in the 8th grade, when a little gnome whispered in her brain. Gundi’s Great Adventure never hit the best seller list, but it started a long love affair with the fantasy genre.

Today she enjoys an escape to Middle Earth during the rare ‘me’ moments her two young daughters allow. When not potty training or kissing boo-boos, she can be found on her back patio in the boondocks of New Hampshire, book or pencil in hand.

Thanks, Terri, for being with us today and good luck with Eye of the Soul!

nails experiment--Sinful Dream On

So I always love a pretty nail color. One of my favorite colors is purple. So when I ran across Sinful Colors' Dream On I couldn't resist. When I got it home and tried it on I found out it was a matte finish.

Pretty. But since I don't have a matte top coat that pretty matte finish goes quickly by the wayside.  And with a topcoat (Sally Hansen No Chip--a more expensive polish I don't usually buy anything over $4 because it's too expensive) it looks like this:

Um, sort of. Two different cameras, and yet it's not as purple as it looks in real life. It's way more purple than that.

However, here it is after one day's wear, this is after a shower, and doing the dishes, and other things that involve washing hands--because in real life, folks my hands end up in water--and typing of course.

Remember this is with Sally Hansen's "No Chip" acrylic top coat. Less than 12 hours later. And yes, before you ask, I do do the nail wrap thing for all it does any good.

Um, so yeah. Another Polish Fail....No I had no opportunity to check the reviews on this where I got it. (There was no internet access where I was in NC) So there goes my last stretch of faith in Sally Hansen, too... However I will say the top coat worked better with some of my other polish flavors. Just not this particular one.

Interview with Jillian Roring, the heroine of The Ice Captain’s Daughter

Tooling around London today, I had the pleasure to have tea with a sweet young lady who I’m sure many of you have heard of her before: Jillian Roring. She’s the daughter of the infamous Ice Captain. Well, you know how the London gossips can be so I thought, while I was able to have her as a captive audience, I’d get the real scoop. Here’s what she (and her pal author Suzanne G. Rogers) told me…

Hi Jillian! Thanks for being here. I know you’ve had a heck of a time recently, so I appreciate it.

Jillian Roring: Yes, thank you, Miss Revezzo. I have had a rather adventuresome time of it, but fortunately my scar is now barely visible at all.

Glad to hear you’re doing better. Why don’t you tell us how it all started? You were heading to your very first Season in London, but something sidetracked those plans, I hear?

Jillian: My story seems unbelievable to me, as I sit here in this warm, comfortable drawing room, but my carriage was actually waylaid by a highwayman! I could scarcely believe it, since it’s 1899 and highwaymen rarely appear anymore.

Shocking, you’re right! Who woulda thought? Thank God for Mackenzie Logan! Speaking of the gentleman, what’d you really think of Mackenzie when he first showed up? Seems to me you’re a resourceful girl. You almost had that brigand in hand.

Jillian: I’m not a sea captain’s daughter for nothing! I was determined to escape the lout, and almost did… until he grabbed the back of my skirt and held me fast. The blackguard was pulling back toward the woods when Mr. Logan appeared with a shotgun. Although Mr. Logan looked a bit like a wooly bear at that point, I was ever so glad to see him.

Awww….he’s more teddy bear than wooly bear, I’m sure! What’d you think when you first heard the rumors of Mackenzie’s philandering?

Jillian: The rumors rather put me off, to be completely honest. Although I must admit, after Mr. Logan had shaved off his beard and changed his clothes, I could scarcely stop looking at him.

Oh yeah. I mean who wouldn’t? He’s so cute!!! Now for a wicked question: If you could go and choose any of his friends, which would it be?

Jillian: Mr. Hawkins, who is Mr. Logan’s particular friend and neighbor, is a gentlemanly sort of man, and pleasant company. Please don’t tell anyone, but my feelings for him could never be quite so warm as they are for Mr. Logan.

Your secret’s safe with…oops! I guess not! Sorry. At any rate, you’re no stranger to the papers are you? The gossip about your father for instance, the Ice Captain, is quite intriguing, tell us the truth, is he as infamous as he seems?

Jillian: I’m given to understand from my Aunt Letty, that the ladies were simply mad for him during the Season he met my mother. His fair coloring and handsome good looks have something to do with it! Plus, I think there’s something about a sea captain that sets the imagination on fire.

Oh, I agree. Finally, the papers have been buzzing about you two lately, care to divulge any future plans between you and Mackenzie?

Jillian: Oh, Miss Revezzo! Despite my regard for you, I beg you not to force a confidence.

Oh all right. I won’t twist your arm.

Jillian: I am determined, however, not to marry unless it is to a man who adores me as much as my father adored my mother.

Honestly, I agree. That is the best way to go. ;) So we’ll just hope it’s with Mackenzie. Dreamy gentleman that he is. And one for your creatrix: S.G. dear what are we really looking forward to in Jillian and Mackenzie’s future? Can you give us a hint? And for those who haven’t read The Ice Captain’s Daughter, care to give us a little taste?

S.G. Rogers: It’s so hard for young ladies and gentlemen in London society, especially when they aren’t prepared for interference from gossips and rivals… most especially from scheming former fiancées such as Sophia Watkins! Here’s a small preview, so you can see what I mean for yourself:

“Your papa…he’s the Ice Captain, is he not?” Sophia asked.

Jillian smiled. The nickname never failed to delight her. “Yes.”

“You might not want to mention that to anyone else.”

“Why not?”

Sophia wrinkled her pert nose. “I’m sure he’s a very good sort of man but importing ice is an awful lot like being in trade.”

Shocked, Jillian didn’t know how to respond. Sophia mistook her expression for fear.

“Oh, don’t worry. We’re friends, so your secret is safe with me.”

“I thank you, truly, but I don’t have anything to conceal as far as my father is concerned.”

Sophie gave Jillian a pretty little pout, as if she were a small child who’d just been caught doing something naughty. “Please don’t be vexed with me. Mama says I blurt out truths in an unvarnished fashion and it’s frightfully rude.

Sophia sounds like a complete…erm, not very nice person! I’m sure, Jillian, you will get the upper hand eventually! Thanks for spending some time with me today.

Folks, I hope you enjoyed this interview as much as I! Here’s just a tad more about Jillian’s story.

The daughter of a wealthy ice merchant, Miss Jillian Roring intends to marry for love. En route to her first Season in London, however, a failed kidnapping sends her into the arms of the most jaded bachelor in England. When Logan and Jillian unwittingly violate the rigid rules of propriety in Victorian-era England, he is obliged to make her an offer of marriage. Because she aspires to be more than an obligation, Jillian refuses the match. Logan follows her to London to woo her properly, but his scheming ex-fiancée has other plans.

Can Logan convince Jillian that his love for her is real or will the cruel gossip and sharp tongues of London society tear their budding relationship apart?

If you’d like to check out Jillian’s story it’s available for Kindle at Amazon and Smashwords for other ereaders, and for more of Suzanne G. Rogers’ fine works you can check out her website at:

Passion for Vengeance by Patty G. Henderson

Patty G. Henderson’s new Gothic Romance, Passion for Vengeance tells a tale of a family torn apart. Jane Havens,  has watched her father the illustrious Colonel Havens die, and her brother Cole slip into alcoholism, while her youngest brother Henry still needs a firm hand. She’s done all she could with the boy but needs help. When Miss Emma Stiles arrives on her doorstep, she thinks she’s found a savior in a fine dress.

There is an instant—and forbidden—attraction between the two women, but Emma comes with baggage of her own. Not all of it able to contain a wardrobe. She is a woman with a haunted past, and apparently, a grudge. She has a strange proclivity for dancing under the stars, a love for Absinthe, and also has a very odd talent. Known as sin eating she can take a person’s sin on herself, thereby erasing the dead person’s deeds and sending them off to meet their maker with a clean soul.

Because of this she feels she owes a debt to society. But her own soul isn’t completely spotless to begin with. Jane’s old, dear nursemaid thinks she knows why, especially given all the evidence against Miss Stiles. Truly, did any of the strange accidents that begin befalling the Havens family begin until Miss Stiles arrived?

Impossible! How could the woman Jane loves have anything to do with all these things?

How can she? I can’t tell. You’ll have to read Passion For Vengeance yourself. Patty’s latest Gothic is sure to please fans of lesbian romance, as well as the old Gothic Romances of the 60s and 70s. Okay, so I’m trying not to **squee** and toot my own horn too much, but heck. These are my tribal grounds and I’m going to party if I want to! Why, you ask? I have a new book out! My very first on a traditional publisher track, and I’m am pleased to announce….

Want a  little taste of the story? Okay:

Unless Stacy Macken can stave off her creditors, she may lose her renowned history center. Yet she knows in her heart that the center is sacred and what a catastrophe losing it would be. How much of a catastrophe, she hasn't a clue.

Until Aaron Fielding arrives with his tales of magical guardians and the Tuatha dé Danann, sworn warriors from Celtic legend who protect humanity from a wicked enemy seeking their destruction.

Is the end of the world imminent? What can she, a modern woman and her warrior lover, possibly have to offer when a long-prophesied druidic mythic battle explodes around them?

Bonus: Includes brand new flash fiction piece, "About A Warrior"
Yes, I tied in the gods I love.  So, there it is. This book was several years in the making, maybe a few decades if you count how long I’ve scribbled essays and short stories about my beloved Celtic Gods. But this is it: the secret I’ve been half-sitting on lo these past few years. Did I mention it’s out on AMAZON? This is for those with Kindle only (or some form of the Kindle app).

Now, scuze me while I go lock myself in ye ole fairy fort. The guards and muses and I have another book to write!

The Ice Captain's Daughter by S.G. Rogers

The Ice Captain's Daughter.
 by Suzanne G. Rogers
(This book was a personal purchase)

In Best selling author Suzanne G. Rogers’ newest release, The Ice Captain’s Daughter, an historical romance, when eighteen year old Miss Jillian Roring is accosted on her way to her first “Season” in London, MacKenzie Logan comes to her aid. Learning that she is far from home, he offers the beleaguered young lady one of his guest rooms. But when Jillian’s aunt and Uncle learn she’s spent the night alone with the reputed rogue Logan, they insist the couple marry to cover up any resulting scandal.   Jillian herself is anything but blemish-free, being the daughter of the famed Ice Captain. How could Logan accept her when all London looks down on her for that? How could her family accept the scandalous Logan, when rumors swirl about the break-up of his last love affair?

But already taken with her charms, Logan agrees to the betrothal. Jillian, on the other hand, isn’t so sure this is the best of decisions, declines and goes home with her aunt and uncle. Besides, the more she learns of Logan, the more unsure Jillian becomes, Rumor is he left his ex-girlfriend to chase women, and she’s heard he and his friends have made bets on who will capture her heart first!

Well, you know how rumor is…Maybe one of the gossipers still has it out for ole Logan. For his part, Logan won’t be discouraged so easily, until Jillian can learn the truth and decide for herself. As for her attackers…where did they get off to? And what happened to Jillian’s maid, who the thief sent home to fetch her uncle and aunt? The one they say never arrived? You’ll have to read to find out.

You know, I love Ms. Rogers' stuff. This is no different. Her Regency Romance debut, The Ice Captain’s Daughter is a delightful Young Adult novella, well-researched and with some surprising elements. Coupled with Rogers’ signature hint of humor, I think her new title lends something to the sometimes stuffy genre of Regency Romance, that may hook a few younger readers to the genre. If you enjoy sweet, lighthearted romance, Suzanne G. Rogers’ The Ice Captain’s Daughter you’ll find it, as I did, for sale currently at Amazon for Kindle, for $.99.

I hear tell Ms. Rogers’ is about to release a follow-up to this delightful tale, so now would be the time to check it out.

Juli D. Revezzo has written the Victorian romance novel WATCHMAKER'S HEART. Check it out at Amazon.

Spirit of the Mountain by Paty Jager and sale

cover art by Nicola Martinez
Spirit of the Mountain
Paty Jager
(I received my review copy from author for an honest review)

I could've sworn I posted this review, but I guess not. So!

Award-winning western Romance author Paty Jager has taken a turn into fantasy romance with her latest series. The initial title in the series, Spirit of the Mountain, tells of daughter of the Nimiipuu chieftain, Wren, as she seeks and finds her weyekin (her guardian spirit), who appears to Wren as a white wolf. But the destiny her guide lays out for her isn’t one she expected or can necessarily stomach, for the Creator has dictated that she be married into an enemy tribe—the feared Blackleg tribe—who have in times past, wreaked much havoc on the peaceful Nimiipuu.

When on a stroll through her beloved mountain’s paths, Wren runs across a lovely white wolf, and thinking it her weyekin come to guide her again, begins pouring out her troubles to it, an impartial listener. But this is no guide, yet it is no ordinary wolf either. No, for it is actually the Spirit of the Mountain, Himiin. The form and duty he’s taken, though he’s proud to do it, has been given to him as a punishment by the Creator, for a death he caused a while back. So it shocks him that Wren would think to stay in his presence, let alone build a friendship with him.

Himiin’s brother and sister council and cajole him, but it’s no use. He feels he must warn her, that all might not be as it seems. He takes human form and the maiden falls as hard for him, as he has for her. Risking one passionate night, and possibly, both their futures. But how can he, a spirit, possibly build a life with Wren, a human, when his first duty is to the mountain and the Nimiipuu, and Wren’s first duty is to build peace between her tribe, and the Blackleg, through marriage to one of the schemers? And how will the Nimiipuu react when they find out the maiden they bargained for, well, isn’t quite as intact as they’d hoped? With an evil spirit on their side, will the Blackleg succeed in destroying the Nimiipuu as they wish?

You’ll have to read to find out.

Spirit of the Mountain (my reading copy of which came from Ms. Jager) gives readers a setting not usually seen in paranormal romance. Paty Jager put a lot of research into this book, and the narrative shows it in the lush settings and mannerisms of her characters. The lore and legends of these people were particularly interesting and the spirits, an interesting bunch. The only drawback to the story was the odd words and names used, but if you’re a longtime reader of fantasy and science fiction, it shouldn’t be too hard to get the hang of. There’s also a pronunciation guide on Ms. Jager’s site if one should need it. Historical notes are also included that point out the history of animosity between these two tribes. Interesting stuff!
All in all, Ms. Jager builds a clever fantasy, here, that will be touched upon again in her forthcoming follow-up, Spirit of the Lake (due out in May from The Wild Rose Press). In the meantime, if you’d like to check out Spirit of the Mountain, it is available in Ebook and paperback from The Wild Rose Press, or

By the way it is going on sale for $.99 Friday (today) and stays on sale through the 30th. Enjoy!

I guess you've noticed, other than books, I'm writing about all sorts of things here now. The nail stuff will probably not last, even though I do still paint them. You don't really want to hear about that (although,...I did start using this more natural nail polish lately called  Mineral

I'll probably resort to doing the pagan blog prompts here as well as some others. Speaking of the pagan blog prompts...

Happy Beltaine to all my pagan friends! Are y’all having a good day? Mine? Meh. I set up my altar, went to pour my libation…

and saw…rain!

As you know, I’ve said it before, I have an odd way of thinking about the holidays, especially since so many of the traditional 8 Sabbats (or 4, if you follow the Insular Celtic festival calendar which for the laymen here is the four major sabbats–Imbolc, Beltaine, Lughnasadh and Samhain) sort of blur in my neck of the woods. Anyway, the Irish considered May 1st the first day of early summer, or a second spring, and lit bonfires in honor of the strengthening sun. Well, *gasp* here in good ole south Florida, we’re already sweltering. Our summer usual consists of two things: Heat and rain. Thought you could get away from it because it’s only May 1st?

Nope! The gods had other plans. It rained like the dickens the last 24 hours. And I earlier saw a poor little frog hopping across my back yard in search of…well I assume he was in search of shelter, poor thing!

I suppose if one were to believe the Old Wives Tales about rain on wedding days (love being the other theme of Beltaine) this might be a bad sign, but you know, I was married the day after a major deluge in my hometown (and yes, it rained that night too) and hubs and I have been going strong for 20 years. :) So, rain’s not always a bad thing, just so long as it doesn’t cave in a roof or knock down a tree limb. Or, you know, flood the backyard. So, to those, my friends, celebrating early summer, blessed be!

May you all have a soft, productive spring.

Q and A with romance author Brynna Curry

Good morning, my friends. *Headdesk* I've been so busy this week, do forgive me. I forgot to tell you all I have an author guest on my main blog:  author Brynna Curry, author of Paranormal romance and romantic suspense, is my guest.

Please welcome Brynna Curry. Author of sweet and steamy romances, she is a full-time mom and wife, a southern girl, ;) a contest judge occasionally, a part-time reviewer for the You Gotta Read Reviews site, review editor for Apollo’s Lyre, and the creator of the Elemental Magic series. She’s taken time out of her very busy schedule to chat with us this week.

Thanks for being here, Brynna, why don’t you start by telling my readers a little about yourself?

Brynna Curry
Brynna Curry: I was born in Russellville, Alabama, but we moved around all over the south. Always the new kid, I was smart, but very shy and didn’t make friends easily. We finally landed in Haleyville, Alabama, after my parents divorced, where I graduated high school. I married my high school sweetheart Jackie and we settled in the rural area of Haleyville near Bear Creek (where he was from) with our son and two daughters.

I write paranormal romance and romantic suspense and the dense forests and rolling countryside make a great back drop for my work. It’s a quiet life here. Always very green in the summer with all the trees on the property and this time of year changing leaves are something not to be missed. It also means all sorts of critters and snakes to deal with too. Deer, bobcats, raccoons and possum are a regular sight around here.

What can you share about your Elemental Magic series with our readers who may not be familiar with it?

Brynna: Elemental Magic follows the Corrigans, a family of Irish hereditary witches who unknowingly are the key to unlocking an ancient curse.

What inspired the series?

Brynna: I had a weird dream the night before I started writing Earth Enchanted. In that shadowy realm of sleep, I saw Briella Farrell, the healer who cast the spell in the beginning of Earth Enchanted. Sadly, this scene was cut in editing which made for a lot of confusion at first, but I was able to add bits and pieces throughout the other books until readers were finally able to discover what actually happened to make Arianne do the things she did. That dream inspired three of the books in the series. To Take up the Sword and Fire’s Ice were fan inspired.

Fan inspired? How awesome! :) Now that Fire’s Ice is out, what can curious fans expect from you next?

Brynna: Fire marks the end of Elemental Magic but not my time with those characters. I have three series planned and in progress. The Shadows of Seven series will follow the Corrigan’s children, beginning with Allaina’s story. Highland Magic will follow Devin and Arianne’s (Fire’s Ice) children Vaughn, Cian, and Grayson. In order to keep the timeline consistent within the story world, HM will pick up after the last Shadow book. You can read more about these wips here.

A third unrelated series, Triple Star Ranch, makes my return to contemporary romantic suspense with Tempting Taylor. While Seven takes place all over the country and in the near future, Triple Star is set in Shady Creek, Alabama, a fictional town which mirrors the rural town where I live.

If you weren’t a writer, what career might you have pursued instead?

Brynna: I would want to be a federal agent or a police detective. Weird, huh?

It’s definitely a more action-packed career than writing, I’d think. :) But it ties right into your Romantic suspense titles, I’ve no doubt.  Do you have any advice for aspiring Romance authors?

Brynna: Read everything you can find in the genre you want to write. See what sells and not just in print. Starting out with e-books can be a great way to gain a fan base and network with others who love to write. Take your time with your manuscript and polish it to a shine. Find a good critique partner and always do your research. Have patience and a thick skin. Never stop trying to learn something new and always pay it forward. Be that person who reaches out to help others.

Good advice, and not just in writing. Thanks so much for spending your time with us, Brynna. Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers before we go? Can you give us a taste of your work?

Ultimate power, or endless love?

Born the son of a Scottish laird a thousand years ago, but now trapped by his cousin’s spell, Devin McLoch has seen countless battles and death. The erstwhile thief has turned away from darker pursuits to lead a life of peace, protecting those he loves and considers part of his clan. However, there is one woman he can never forget, who must be given a chance to change, to accept her heart and his.

Arianne Farrell is just as dangerous and intoxicating as her power. Imprisoned in an ancient stone dance more than a thousand years ago, her only chance at freedom from the spell is through love—a love she denied. When Devin asks for her aid to save another from imminent death, she realizes there is more at stake than just her freedom or her heart.

WARNING: Two stubborn sexy wizards using magic with no bounds, scorching love scenes, and happy ever after. Ever play with fire?

Excerpt #2 – General audience

Arianne felt Devin’s power ripple on the wind, buffeting against hers as he crossed the threshold of the standing stones. He didn’t bother with the ceremony of asking permission to cross the circle. His eyes skimmed over her, heating her skin with just his gaze.

“You came.” Oh, how she wanted to run into his arms and cling to him. Why was he just standing there?

He frowned and crossed his arms over a wide muscled chest hidden in a black shirt. “I need your help, Ari.”

There was a sense of urgency in his step and desperation in his voice when he spoke. He hadn’t come for her. Nothing he could have said would have surprised her more. “I beg your pardon?”

“I don’t have time for games, Ari. I need your help.”

“The child is ill? Allaina told me.”

“She visits me. I’ve been teaching her about healing herbs.”

“I see. That makes things easier. Do you know what a phoenix is?”

“I am looking at one. An extraordinarily powerful witch with fire magic. I may not be as skilled as my sister was, but I know a great many things Brie never took the time to learn about lore and truth in myth.”

“Raine Roarke is a phoenix. She’s three and her powers are emerging early. Allie and I can’t bind them any longer and she’s too young to control them on her own.”

“Allie said as much.” Her heart jerked hard in her chest. Her niece, Sorca, had been only half that age when she had last seen her. Regardless of the hate she felt for her sister, she hadn’t been able to scorn the child, and loved her dearly. “The fevers have started?”

She saw the grief in his eyes, the ache he felt for the child and her parents. How could she turn him down? Perhaps the truth would be kinder than a lie that wouldn’t come true. “The child will die, then. What can I do that you cannot?”

“You can drain her excess magic. Link with her as you did to steal Briella’s powers.”

“I had reasons for what I did. And you would be the resident expert on the subject of thievery.” She bristled.

“I’m not trying to judge you. My past isn’t the issue here and neither is yours. Would it work?”

“I suppose, but it would be a temporary solution at best.”

“And more than anyone else can do to help her right now.”

“You are forgetting one vital truth. I cannot leave the circle. My sister’s beloved demon saw to that. I would have to go to the child. And even then, the link might not save her and could kill both of us.”

“Agree to help Raine and I will free you from your prison.”

“And then what? Send me back here after a taste of what I’ve lost?”

“No. That would be beyond cruel. I think you’d find Scotland much more pleasant.”

“Where in Scotland?”

“I want you to stay with me at Glen McLoch, Ari. I want you with me. There is a circle scorched in fire and blood surrounding the castle. As long as you are within that line, you’ll be free to do as you please if your actions don’t harm others.”

“So I’d merely exchange one prison for another, then.”

“Until another way is found.”

“I turned down your offer once.”

“I would give everything I have, do whatever in my power to save that child, Ari. Understand? Whatever you want, it is yours. Anything.”

“Dangerous words, lover.”

“I mean them. I don’t give my word lightly.”

“The Corrigans fear me because of the legend. They might turn you away if you show up with me on their doorstep. “She turned her back on him, crossed her arms to stave off a shiver. She was afraid. Afraid of how they would treat her. And how would she be able to give him up when it was time for her to return? There would be no happily-ever-afters for her.

Devin’s hands rested lightly on her bare shoulders. Rough, not smooth or pampered. “No one will harm you, Ari. I protect what is mine.”

Turning under his hands, Ari touched his cheek and looked deep into those tawny eyes. Searching them for the answer, she asked, “And am I yours, then?”

He smiled. “You’ve always been mine.”

Excerpt #1 – (Steamy)

Dark, rich chocolate colored bedding echoed the tile framing the fireplace. Dainty furniture, curved legs and soft cushions, yet the poster bed was large and sturdy. She’d seen it before while she visited his dreams. Definitely Devin’s room. And remembering didn’t help the ache snaking through her body.

Walking into the en suite, the first thing to catch her eyes was the floor-to-ceiling mirror covering one wall. Arianne studied her reflection. Her long, dark curls were mussed and tangled around a pale face. Her lips were pink and just a bit swollen from Devin’s kiss. The only thing she wore was a long white shirt. Sniffing the collar, she smelled the crisp, clean fragrance clinging to the material. His shirt, not conjured. Devin didn’t wear cologne, but the scent of his soap always stayed with her. He must have changed her clothes. What else had she missed?

Because I love you. Men were ever a puzzle. Still, hadn’t she known? The dreams they shared had changed over time, slow and sweet instead of hot and fierce. A softness came over his face each night she visited his sleep, the same one she had seen this morning. Just that look was enough to have her quaking inside.

She found a bottle of bubble bath on the side of the tub. Thanks to Devin’s dreams and Allie’s influence, she had knowledge of modern conveniences such as indoor plumbing. Turning the faucet on hot, Arianne poured two capfuls under the stream and let the water run until the big round tub filled. Reluctantly, she unfastened the shirt buttons and let the material fall away to the floor. Slipping into the frothy bubbles, she sighed and let the reality of her situation sink in.

I am finally out of that wretched circle. True enough, but she was still in a prison of sorts. One with running water, walls, food that didn’t taste like air, and a sexy male witch bent on driving her to frustration. Not so bad, all things considered.

Being trapped in the stone dance didn’t mean she hadn’t noticed changes in the world around her for a thousand years. She tipped her feet out of the water, waved toward them, and turned her toenails a bright fiery red. Allie brought her little things from the modern world. Mostly books filled with sweet love stories; more than a few of them brought a blush to her cheeks. What would Ryan think of his daughter’s taste in novels? Better not to head down that road. Allie had dreams of being a writer like her aunt and uncle. If what she liked to read was any indication, she’d write hot. Very hot. Speaking of hot, a soft tapping sounded at the door. Her maddening laird had returned.

“Okay in there?” His voice sounded hesitant. “Breakfast is ready.”

Time to ruffle the phoenix’s feathers a bit. “There is no need to be shy, Devin. You can come in.”

The sound of splashing water rippled past his ears. Temptress.

Knowing Ari was just on the other side of the door, naked and wet, willing to succumb to every fantasy he could imagine, was a torment in itself. All he had to do was accept her sultry invitation and toss aside his plan. But she deserved a sweet slide into love, not the wild, mad rush of pleasure he craved. One palm rested on the door of its own volition, ready to comply. Not yet. Now, if only his traitorous body would listen to his heart. “That depends, sweetheart.”

“Oh?” she called out from the other side. “On what?”

Devin chuckled at the line, but he just couldn’t resist teasing her. “What are you wearing?”

She laughed. “Bubbles. Lots of bubbles. Share them with me.”

He saw it so clearly. Ari’s creamy skin peeking through the frothy bubbles. Open, welcoming. Need clawed under the skin, screamed at him. Why the hell not? Feeling a quiver of desire vibrate through his body, he called her bluff. “And what would you have me do with those bubbles? Hmm, Ari?”

“Oh, I am sure you could think of something. Something deliciously wicked. I have shared your dreams. I know your fantasies, Devin.”

Oh, you have no idea. His mind made up, Devin opened the door.

She lay in his huge garden tub, feet propped up on the rim, eyes closed, waterfall of black hair piled on top of her head. A soft smile graced her face. So she was enjoying their teasing banter. “Have you changed your mind and decided to join me?”

“Maybe.” No reason he couldn’t push them both to the edge. Pulling the t-shirt over his head, Devin tossed it into the corner. He laid his cellphone on the sink–out of danger–kneeled by the edge of the tub and dipped one hand into cooling water, using his magic to heat it.

“Mmm. Nice.”

He let his voice drop to a whisper as he leaned close to her ear. “I want to slick my hands over every inch of your skin until you shiver from the heat.” His fingers found the back of her knee in the water and trailed higher along the inside of her thigh. “And then…”

A soft “Devin” slipped from her lips as Arianne’s eyes flew open. “And then…”
