Halloween event guest post--historical paranormal author Susan Macatee

Good evening, my dear guests. I see you've returned. How wonderful! What's that? The ghosts? Oh, don't mind them. After what happened last year I decided it would probably be best to employ and extra regiment of guards. Most of them are soldiers, yes, it's true...Civil War, and the Revolutionary war to tell by their resumes. Don't mind them. So long as you don't have anything stake-like with you, they should leave you alone. Now then, my first guest is a dear girl who knows a little something about Civil War soldiers. Turns out she's a friend to us vampire kind to. So, please do welcome Ms. Susan Macatee whose come here to chat with me today. Come sit by me, Susan, and tell me and my guests a bit about yourself.
Susan Macatee writes American Civil War romance, some with a paranormal twist. From time travels to vampire tales, her stories are always full of love and adventure. She’s spent many years as a Civil War civilian reenactor with the 28th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment. She's a wife, mother of three grown sons, and has recently become a grandmother. Outside of spending time with family, she spends her free time watching favorite old movies, and inhaling books.

Mistress: Very interesting, dear. *sigh* I must admit, I have a soft spot for the Union boys. Now for the questions. What inspired your novel Sweet Redemption?

Susan Macatee: Sweet Redemption was inspired by a number of things. First of all, the story is set in 1862 at Fredericksburg, where a major Civil War battle was fought. The real life story of Joshua Chamberlain, who fought for the Union in this battle, had an influence in the opening of my story when the hero is pinned down on a dark, cold field, by Confederate fire. The other influences were the historical vampire novels of the late Dawn Thompson, as well as my love of vampires in general, dating back to my grade school days when I rushed home to watch the soap, ‘Dark Shadows’. Since then, I’d always wanted to write a vampire story. Combining it with the history of the Civil War was my way of personalizing the age-old place of vampires in literature.

Mistress: That was a great show. Now these are the fun questions. Tell me your favorites. Which do you prefer: All Hallow’s Eve or All Saint’s Day?

Susan: All Hallow’s Eve, of course.

Mistress: A girl after my own heart! Favorite scary movie?

Susan: Psycho

Mistress: Oh, good choice! Favorite leading man: Dr. Frankenstein, or Dracula?

Susan: Dracula

Mistress: I must agree. He was such a gentleman, you have no idea. Shame what that awful Bram Stoker did to him. ;) Next question: Pick your poison: Candy corn or chocolate?

 Susan: chocolate

Mistress: What are you going to dress up as for Halloween this year?

Susan: Since I’m now a grandma, I won’t be dressing up, but will be standing at my door giving out candy and taking pics of my granddaughter in her first Halloween costume. She’ll be a year old on November 8th.

Mistress: Oh, now. That is a good reason not to dress up as anything scary. (Of course, if you wanted to borrow anything from my closet, I wouldn't mind. :)) *shuffles through cards* If you could be in any classic horror novel, or story, which would it be?

Susan: I’m a big Edgar Allen Poe fan, so ‘The Raven’ would be my choice.

Mistress: Excellent choice. Poe was another gentleman. Very fine man, in my opinion. Please give us a taste of your work.

On a cold December night, Union infantry captain, Jonathan Hackett, is pinned down on the Fredericksburg battlefield trying to escape Confederate fire. But a creature of the night, more dangerous than any enemy soldier, stalks him. Jon must fight for his life as well as his soul. Maddie Emery has lost everything dear to her. Her husband and parents have passed on and her brothers are off fighting in the Confederate Army. She’s alone, trying single-handedly to hold onto her family’s farm, when a Yankee soldier collapses across her stoop. Maddie and Jon soon form a bond of love and tender desire. But when Jon begins to exhibit signs of becoming the creature he fears most, is their love enough to fight off the evil of a centuries old vampire bent on destroying them?

Excerpt:
At first she held her lips firm, then opened allowing him to explore the velvety insides of her mouth. Encouraged, he leaned into her, and she yielded beneath him, sighing softly as she reclined on the settee. He pulled the pins, releasing her hair into a silken veil trailing over her bodice. He cupped one of her lush breasts through the fabric of her gown, and she moaned in response. Encouraged, he adjusted his body over hers, his arousal growing.
She gazed up at him, eyes half-closed in passion. He focused on her throat and the steadily beating pulse. He pushed a strand of hair back and fixated on the soft, white skin, gaze drawn to the pulse point. His lips grazed the spot, the beat and scent driving him mad. He had the overwhelming urge to bite. His mouth distended.
An image of what Arnwolf had done to him in the barn, made him jerk back. His heart pounded as he traced his finger along his teeth. Two sharp, pointed fangs had taken the place of his canines. He rose from the settee and howled, backing away.
Mrs. Emery stared at him.
He turned away, so she wouldn’t see. What had he become?

Oh my! That sounds fantastic! I want to meet this man if we ever get a chance... Folks, Sweet Redemption is available on Kindle http://www.amazon.com/Sweet-Redemption-ebook/dp/B0056ICETQ/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1313157188&sr=1-7

Halloween event--guest post: romance author Mackenzie Crowne

*Night Mistress peeks into crystal ball* Oh good. I think the werewolf clans are distracting the villagers. *sigh* It’s about time we got a chance to breathe. It will be a refreshing change, don’t you think? A little peace and quiet, hopefully for the rest of this event.

Our next victim–

*Juli pokes Mistress* Be nice.

Mistress: Very well. Our next guest, Mackenzie Crowne, writes a little about weres. I think she tamed them on the way in. Mackenzie, thank you so much for that charm you cast. *sighs relief* Come sit by the fire, dear, and tell us a little about yourself and your work.

author Mackenzie Crowne
Author Mackenzie Crowne: I’m a wife, mother, and grandmother. My husband and I were blessed with two rambunctious little boys who we managed to raise into wonderful men without any disfiguring mishaps. Dirt bikes and ESPN are the order around our house, and life at the ‘Testosterone Ranch’ more closely resembles one of today’s wacky reality shows, than yesterday’s Leave It To Beaver.

Mistress: What does these days? Of course, the old days I remember would make Beaver weep. There was this time when the villagers wanted to… What? *sigh* Oh, very well. The Minion’s telling me I was rude to interrupt. (as if she knows anything about manners. My apologies, dear Mac. So tell us about your love of writing? When did that start?

Mackenzie: My love of books, specifically the romance genre, has been a lifelong affair, both as a reader and a writer. A bout with breast cancer sharpened my resolve to see my stories shared with others. As of today, I am a five-year survivor, living my dream.

Mistress: Congratulations on five years! Tell us a little about your work. What inspired your novel Gift of the Realm?

Mackenzie: My husband and I were driving on a dirt road in the middle of the mountains and another vehicle must have crested a hill in the distance because suddenly a beam of light shot up into the night sky. I thought, wow, that looks like a doorway into another dimension. It disappeared almost immediately, but my imagination was already engaged. I can’t possibly explain the convoluted trip from doorway to a fairy mound beneath a ring of stones in Ireland, but the journey produced Gift of the Realm.

Mistress: Now for the fun questions: Which are your favorites? All Hallow’s Eve or All Saint’s Day?

Mackenzie: Hallow’s Eve definitely. Halloween makes it possible for a weenie like me to embrace the lighter side of spooky.

Mistress: Aw, we won’t tell, will we folks? So, maybe this next question doesn’t apply do you have any favorite scary movies? Or should I say, how do you feel about them?

Mackenzie: I HATE scary movies. I remember watching Psycho when I was a little girl. For a year afterwards, I was scared to go upstairs, so I would make my little sister go first. ;-)

Mistress: Some siblings do make good sacrifices. ;) Why are the minions protesting now? *sigh* Please, I am trying to conduct a serious discussion here. *shakes head* Don’t mind them, dear. I’m torturing them as soon as you head home for the night. ;) Who do you like better: Dr. Frankenstein, or Dracula?

Mackenzie: Dracula. He’s such a snazzy dresser. Gotta love a guy in a tux.

Mistress: Candy corn or chocolate?

Mackenzie: Chocolate. Candy corn is nasty!

Mistress: So I’ve been told. What are you going to dress up as for Halloween this year?

Mackenzie: I’ll be pulling out my standard devil’s horns to pass out candy to the little angels who ring my bell.

Mistress: I hope no angry villagers show up at your door! ;) If you could be in any classic horror novel, or story (such as Dracula, Frankenstein, Carmilla, Turn of the Screw, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Tell-Tale Heart? The Raven?), which would it be?

 Mackenzie: Hmm. Weenie remember?

 Mistress: Oh, you are not!

Mackenzie: Horror novels are even worse than movies. Can I choose Young Frankenstein instead?

Mistress: Definitely! I’ll tell you a secret: That’s a favorite around here too. Every once in a while my minions quote it. ;) Back to the subject at hand: Please give us a taste of your work.

Gift of the Realm

Beneath the fairie mound of Dunhaven’s Door, two dreamers meet their destiny… After a decade of trying to outrun her debilitating dreams, Keely returns to Ireland to face the ancient ring of stones and the man haunting them. Within the stones, she embraces her fairie heritage and her mystical gifts. But can she trust the handsome Halfling who shares her dreams and holds her heart? When Keely reappears in his life, Colin’s fairie blood threatens to gain the upper hand. Compelled to assist the lovely Halfling, he agrees to help her break the three-hundred-year-old curse on their families, but he’ll do it on his terms—as a black wolf. Together, two Halflings can stand against any power, but only love can break the bonds of bitterness. Will Colin’s arrogant plan to outwit the King of the Fairies doom Keely for eternity? Or is their love enough to break the curse?

Mistress: Sounds very romantic! Where can our guests find you on that evil little realm called the Web?

Mackenzie: I love making new friends. Stop on by and visit me @ http://mackenziecrowne.com/wp/ https://www.facebook.com/MackenzieCrowne https://twitter.com/MacCrowne

You can find Gift of the Realm @ http://www.thewildrosepress.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=177_139&products_id=4826 or http://www.amazon.com/Gift-of-the-Realm-ebook/dp/B007XU2BBG/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1335621060&sr=1-2

Thanks for being with us, Mackenzie. We wish you all the best of luck with the book and hope to see you back here again sometime! ;) I might even see if I can get Dracula to visit the next time. post signature

Halloween with YA author Paige Cuccuro (guest post)

Hello folks. Another Halloween. Is that why all the traffic from the local peasants? *Mistress closes curtains* I hope so. They do make my minions nervous. Oh, well. Never mind. Welcome to our yearly open house. The first guest we have for you is a talented author of young adult fiction. Paige Cuccaro welcome. We haven't had any "young" adults running around the castle for a long time, though...maybe our just turned 100 year old minions count? No? Oh, well. Why don't you tell us a little about yourself? Night Mistress: First off, tell us a little about yourself and your work.

Paige Cuccaro: Okay, well, my name is Paige Cuccaro. I live in Ohio with my husband, and three daughters. I didn’t start out wanting to be a writer, although I’ve always enjoyed writing. Once I started though, I knew it was something I’d never stop doing. I write paranormal romance and urban fantasy. Under my penname, Alison Paige, I also write paranormal erotica, but there’s almost always a bit of the otherworldly in my writing.

*Mistress preens* : Otherworldly is good. What inspired Commencement?

Paige: I am totally fascinated with biblical angels and Enoch, (who contributed to the bible and was said to be related to Noah,) retells an amazing account of angels taking wives, having children the bible calls nephilim and describes as giants. I’ve done endless research, more to satisfy my own curiosity and the writer in me just started saying, “What if?” What if the angels were still taking wives and having children, but over the eons had figured out a way to make their children seem just as normal as any human? What if these children, these nephilim, were living among us not even realizing the true supernatural power they possessed? Commencement (and the entire Hellsbane series) grew out of that premise. Depending on your beliefs it could all be very possible…and I love that!

Night Mistress: Sounds interesting! Now for some fun questions: All Hallow’s Eve or All Saint’s Day?

Paige: All Hallow’s Eve

Night Mistress: Favorite scary movie?

Paige: Poltergeist

Night Mistress: Frankenstein, or Dracula?

 Paige: Dracula!

Night Mistress: Candy corn or chocolate?

Paige: Chocolate

Night Mistress: Note to Minions, more chocolate next year. ; ) What are you going to dress up as for Halloween this year?

Paige: I’m going with the classics. I’m vamping out this year!

Night Mistress: A fine choice if I do say so myself! :) If you could be in any classic horror novel, or story (such as Dracula, Frankenstein, Carmilla, Turn of the Screw, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Tell-Tale Heart? The Raven?), which would it be?

Paige: It would be cool to be in Dracula! I just love Bram Stoker’s time period.

Mistress: It was quite nice, though really, I have to tell you, I prefer indoor plumbing and air conditioning. You have no idea how drafty those old castles got! ;) Now then, Paige, dear, please give us a taste of your work.

Hell hath no fury like a woman’s scorn for frat guys…

Emma Jane Hellsbane knows something evil is worming its way through her college campus—she can feel it. Literally. Her freakish ability to feel other people’s emotions as though they were her own has always been monumentally awkward, and it’s easier for her to just pretend it doesn’t exist. But this time her paranormal ability just might help her save lives.

Emma Jane’s fairly certain that whatever the hateful, egomaniacal, Godlike thing is, it’s set up shop inside her boyfriend, the frat boy/soccer star Justin. And if she doesn’t figure a way to get it out of him soon, Justin’s soul will be the appetizer to the main course—the whole student body. Problem is, the big baddy is granting sinister wishes, and with each one the risks grow higher and the phrase Be careful what you wish for becomes a real-life dire warning. Of course for Emma, what feels like it could be the end is in fact just the beginning…

Excerpt:

He exhaled through his nose, making his nostrils flare. His forehead wrinkled, then he turned back to the computer. “Salt.”

“Huh?”

“Supernaturals don’t like salt. It’s a known fact,” he said, typing as he talked. The kid had skills. “Next

time you go over to the frat-sty, sprinkle salt around. If there’s something otherworldly being held there, you’ll know it.”

“Seriously? I’m supposed to throw salt all over the place? They’ll think I’m nuts.”

“What, it’s a secret?” His quiet snicker shook his shoulders.

“Har-har.”

He sobered. “Not all over the place, Einstein. Sprinkle it on things. Stuff that could hold a spirit: boxes, cups, bowls, books, anything old.”

“Salt.” I tried to picture myself tip-toeing around the Kappa Omega fraternity house with one of the

plastic salt shakers the guys had swiped from Mickey D’s.

Oh, this was so not going to be fun.

“Sea salt,” Mihir said, head down, fingers flying over his keyboard, “works better.”

“Right.” Of course it does. “What are you doing with all that typing and clicking?”

“Fixing grades.”

“No you’re not. Tell me you are not hacked into the school’s computer.” I sat up straight, swallowing hard against my suddenly dry throat. I knew computer hacking was the pastime of most hormone-crazed kids these days, but walking on the wrong side of the law, virtually or not, gave me the willies.

He glanced over his shoulder at me, looking very young and mischievous. Then he winked and turned back to the computer. “Relax, Emma, they can’t trace me. I’m too good. Besides, I’m just fixing what some other numb-nut screwed up. At the rate those IT dips the school hired are moving, they won’t isolate the virus till next year. I’ll have it fixed in another hour or two tops.”

“Virus? Is that what made everyone’s grades show as Fs?”

“Yep.”

“Oh. Well then, carry on.” I pushed to my feet and took the three steps to the other side of the dorm

room to stand behind his desk chair. “The dean said he’d postpone commencement next week until they can figure out which students really failed and which were just hacked. That would definitely suck. My family’s way too psyched about coming. Telling them the thing’s postponed would be…scary.”

“You know it. My parents almost had a cow over the grades. I told them the Fs weren’t real, but they’re paranoid it’ll somehow keep me from getting into med school. Boo-hoo. Right?”

Mihir didn’t really want to be a doctor. He wanted to be Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Like I said…he’s fifteen.

Mihir swung his gaze, wagged his brows. “Hey, while I’m in here, what’ll ya give me for an A in advanced physics?”

“Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that B. I earned it.” Okay, it was a B minus, but it was all mine. I hated math, and just because I’d skipped some grades in high school didn’t make college courses cake for me.

I reached over and mussed his hair, then left to begin my search for sea salt…and sleazy hidden spirits.

This was insane.

Review: The Druid by Suzanne G. Rogers

The Druid (Dani and the Immortals)
by
Suzanne G. Rogers (review copy provided for me by Suzanne.)

When a modern-day shieldmaiden is kidnapped and taken to Asgard, she becomes enmeshed in an intrigue between immortals. Worse, after a magical artifact goes missing, Dani gets the blame.  Although she’s expelled from Asgard, she undertakes a secret quest to recover the artifact, braving rogue trolls, dark elves, and underworld criminals. Ultimately, however, she’ll have to defy Odin himself.

In Fantasy author S.G. Rogers’ spring release, The Druid, she tells of a young woman who’s fallen for an author Emrys Drew—or more specifically, a character in his book who happens to be an elf prince. Prince Rein. When the author brings his coat to Dani’s dry cleaning establishment, she can’t help but have a little fun. She tries on the coat . . . and finds herself bashed over the head and kidnapped to Asgard.

Here, she finds the hero of her beloved novel is in fact, a real person—erm, elf—and that the author she’s so enamored of . . . didn’t exactly make up everything he wrote. Nor is he merely a human. Here, they know Emrys Drew simply as the Druid. And he’s anything but a favored personage among the gods of Asgard. A a mysterious Immortal is out for the Druid’s blood and poor Dani gets in the way.

Dani can’t help but defend him, even though she finds her regard of the elf prince growing. Can she go back home? Can she smooth the ruffled immortal feathers, or will Emrys die despite her best efforts? You’ll have to read to find out! You can read more about the novel here.

The Druid is yet another fabulous—and fun—fantasy tale from author S. G. Rogers. Fans of fantasy epics like the Chronicles of Narnia will enjoy this story, I'm sure. I know I did. If you’d like to give it a try it’s available at, Amazon

S.G. did a little guest post here, sometime ago, talking about this book. If you missed it and would like to read some background on The Druid, it's up here.
