Tournament of Chance by S.G. Rogers

Tournament of Chance
Suzanne G. Rogers

(My review copy received from the author for honest review)

Tournament of Chance is the story of a young woman, Heather, who dreams of becoming royalty. What she doesn't expect is the biases the monarchy hold against the common folk like her, until she learns King Chance's archery tournament, the one she dreams of winning, is rigged. King Chance really has no intention of ever letting a commoner win, despite the promises he's made. Heather doesn't know that her loss will spark a revolution, and that her whole life will be spent trying to stop that revolution. Nor that it will lead her to her true love, and her biggest loss.

Because of a mishap in an enchanted cavern, her life becomes chaotic then, and thrust through time, her life is lived in bits and pieces that will have her trying to piece it back together. Her decisions will affect the entire course of her world's history.

I just finished this novel this week and enjoyed it very much. It has some very funny moments (like the one I posted earlier this week) and some that left me in tears. My honest review is that I've read so much of Ms. Rogers' work I can't help but look forward to each new title. I've come to love her work and lament she can't write faster! *laughs* So maybe I'm a little biased, but this one well, it left me in tears and cheering for Heather all the same.

Would you like to know what happens? If so, Tournament of Chance is available at Amazon.

Tuesday Teaser--Tournament of Chance by S.G. Rogers

This is from Suzanne G. Rogers' latest release, Tournament of Chance

This is my teaser for the day (review forthcoming).

“Swim to that cave.”

As she swam into the mouth of the cave, Heather took care to avoid an enormous, barnacle-encrusted ship’s anchor lodged to one side. Although the surf was relatively calm, she was relieved to reach solid ground. Exhausted, she climbed onto the flat rocks at the cave opening, shed her boots and collapsed in the late afternoon sun. Joe kicked off his boots, then removed his shirt and twisted it to squeeze out the excess moisture. If Heather had been alone, she would have done the same.

“Are we safe here? Won’t the king’s guards follow us?” she asked.

“Nah,” he replied. “They don’t want to run into my little friend.”

“Who do you mean?”

“You’ll see.” Joe turned his head toward the cave, cupped his hands over his mouth and yelled, “Hey, Lizard Lips!”

Something stirred in the depths of the cave. Despite her fatigue, Heather jumped to her feet in alarm. As she peered into the darkness, she saw an enormous creature undulating in her direction. Lunging for her boot, she pulled her hunting knife from its hidden sheath and took a fighting stance. Joe’s laughter was disconcerting.

“Relax. Shimmer won’t hurt you as long as you’re with me.”

The creature emerging from the darkness was a huge black dragon, large enough to dwarf her family’s stone cottage back home. Heather blanched. The dragon ignored her, and bent his head down toward Joe.

“Hello, Your Highness. Is this female my dinner?” the dragon said.

Heather bristled with fear, but she wasn’t going into that gullet without a fight. Barefooted and soaking wet, she brandished the knife in her hand.

“Just who’re you calling dinner?”

*g* Poor Heather!

If you'd like to try Tournament of Chance, it's available from Amazon, I hope you enjoy it!

Review: Mistletoe and Montana by Anna Small

Mistletoe& Montana
Mistletoe & Montana
Anna Small
(ARC provided for review)

In Anna Small’s new tale Mistletoe & Montana, Divorcee Joely Burbank takes her children to visit their father, Ben, in Montana for the Christmas holidays. She hopes to fly right back to LA, but a snowstorm dashes those plans. Instead, she ends up spending the holiday with her ex-husband. Ben’s a retired football player and seems as aloof as ever. She’d rather just take the next bus back—at the very least to retrieve the presents she left behind. How was she to know Mother Nature had other plans?

How can Joely remain under the same roof with him when all they seem to do is fight? This visit seems the time to air out all their grievances, or not as the first time she and Ben are together …they kiss.

Seems the children aren’t the only ones who’d like to see them get back together. But there’s a lot of bad history to comb through first. Will Christmas help Joely and Ben put the past behind them? You’ll have to read to find out!

I enjoyed this new title from the author of Taking a Chance on Forever and Tame the Wild Wind. It was short, yes, but I could feel the icy chill in the winter air just reading it (and no, being here in Florida it was warm the days I read it)! Anna did a good job recreating a northern winter and the tug of wishing for what might have been between Joely and Ben. If you like contemporary sweet, holiday romances, you might too. If you’d like to try it out, Anna’s Mistletoe & Montana is available at Amazon for the Kindle.

Thanksgiving belated

There is no sincerer love than the love of food. ~George Bernard Shaw

You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink. ~G. K. Chesterton

What we’re really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving? ~Erma Bombeck, “No One Diets on Thanksgiving,” 26 November 1981

Give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way. ~Native American Saying

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope you all had much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. I’m thankful for…you, my friends and family.

review: Seeking A Scribe by Marsha A. Moore

In fantasy romance author Marsha A. Moore’s popular novel Seeking a Scribe, Lyra, a world-weary teacher moves back home to take care of her dying aunt. As she settles into her new home, she encounters an interesting bookstore. When she goes back for a second visit, however, she notices the store doesn’t seem to be in the same location. Once inside she encounters Cullen, a handsome gentleman, and one she’s sure she’s met before. She’s right, and he has in his possession a special book she hasn’t seen since her childhood.

He’s also got a tale to tell, one of a world where a dark dragon holds the land’s inhabitants on the edge of war. Lyra alone can stop him, but to do so she’s got to traverse this land, and write a book about her adventure—and have someone read and approve it. And she only has a limited amount of time. In the midst of all that, she’s distracted by the handsome Cullen and her budding feelings for him.

Marsha A. Moore has built Seeking a Scribe into a much more complex tale than I can explain in this short amount of space, so you’ll have to read it for yourself to get the full story. I certainly enjoyed it and I think fans of traditional fantasy and fantasy romance will as well.

In the interest of full disclosure, Marsha A. Moore is a good friend of mine, we've had lunch together on many occasions and I heard all about the book even before she'd finished writing it. I even got to see various versions of Marsha's covers, which she designed and painted herself. :) When the book released I went out and bought my copy and if you've followed my reading for any length of time, you know it takes me a while to get through books. That doesn't mean Seeking a Scribe is slow, it's not. All in all it's an intriguing story and I look forward to delving into the follow up novels. If you’d like to check it out, it’s available for Kindle at Amazon.

Tuesday Teaser--Home by Calisa Rhose

(A Meme by Should Be Reading…)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
 • Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
 • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
 • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My choice for this week is an historical romance I’ve been reading.
Home by Calisa Rhose.

I can't say which page this is as it's an, it's about halfway through:

“Ma was bugging me about something.”
Ah, Mrs. C. Did he think that explained everything? She nodded. “How is Mrs. C.?”
“Insistent when she wants her way.” Sam smiled ruefully. “Sorry, guess that doesn’t say much. She…lost something, and wants me to find it.”
“Oh.” Her mind? Poppy instantly felt guilty for the thought and looked to see if Sam had somehow heard her, but he sat staring at a line of ants streaming up a nearby oak tree. “Any luck? I s’pose not, if she’s still wanting it found.”

What is it Sam’s mom wants him to find? You’ll have to read Home to find out.

What could a gypsy and a Vietnam veteran have in common? Silvertown’s outcast, Poppy Tippen, has loved football hero Sam “The Force” Callahan forever. But he never seemed to know she was alive. Now he’s home from the war and she suddenly finds herself comforting him from the demons of “that damn war.” Is his attention merely an escape from the haunting nightmares? Or does she hold the interest of the only man she’s ever truly loved? Sam Callahan’s only solace from the war nightmares wrecking his life comes in the unlikely form of a gypsy girl with stigmas of her own. He’s known Poppy his entire life, but there’s something different about her now. Something special he desperately wants to hold on to. Can he convince her she’s the only thing he needs to put the past behind him?

If you’d like to give it a try HOME it's available at The Wild Rose Press, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble.
