(make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!) Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!   For today's Teaser Tuesday, I'm doing something a little different, and featuring a brand new author I--almost literally--just met. :) She's a nice gal, and her debut novel looks interesting. I hope you find it so too.

The Promise
“Let’s see what we have here,” he murmured, fumbling with the clasp until it sprang open.  He arched a brow and looked up at her with a question in his eyes.

“I removed the portraits for my daughter.  They were her great-grandparents.”

“Your grandparents then?”

“Not precisely.”  Jane wondered if he was always so nosey.  She tried again without success to pull it from his grasp.  He was being rude and she was getting a little irritated.  She decided to wrap things up and try her luck at Hancock’s.
“Are you interested in the piece or not, sir?”

He ignored her question.  “It would be more valuable were the portraits included.  Enamel miniatures are highly valued by collectors.  Would you consider selling those as well?”

“I would not,” Jane said firmly.

“May I?” the clerk asked as he tried to raise the necklace over her head.

Jane stepped back and the locket fell from his hands.  “I’d rather not.”

“To provide you with an accurate offer I must first weigh the gold and measure the stones,” he pressed.

“Please remove it.”

The atmosphere in the shop suddenly took on a strange tension.  Jane could see the wheels turning in his head.  From the corner of her eye she observed the guard slowly moving closer.  The clerk reached out his hand, palm down, in a calming gesture.

“Please forgive me; that was rude.  It is a lovely piece and I’m confident my manager will be eager to acquire it.  Allow me to summon him.  He is experienced enough to determine your locket’s value with a visual assessment alone.”  The clerk glanced at the guard and a silent message passed between them.  “Please wait here, Miss Gray.”

The clerk walked through a wide hall behind the glass center counter and stopped in front of a well-dressed man she assumed to be the manager.  He had been watching her closely from the moment she entered.  The men whispered back and forth, furtively glancing at her several times.  They seemed agitated.  Jane’s anxiety level soared.

She darted a wary glance at the guard.  The friendly wink had been replaced with a steely stare.  He seemed ready to pounce on her.

The manager went into a side room, reappearing seconds later with a sheet of paper.  He showed it to the clerk who nodded gravely.  Both men began to walk toward her with studied nonchalance as if trying not to alarm her.

Every instinct told her to make a break for it.  She backed away.  The guard took another step toward her just as the manager shouted, “Hans, seize that woman!”

At that moment two elderly ladies entered, stepping in front of Hans.  He lurched sideways to avoid a collision.  Jane feinted left and ducked past the women, then ran out the open door into traffic.  She wove between the crush of pedestrians, produce carts, and horse-drawn carriages, then darted down an alley, heavy footsteps pounding close behind her.  Too terrified to look back, she ran for her life, tacking between empty crates and garbage to emerge on the other side of the block.  Her bonnet came untied and spiraled into the wind.

Shouts of, “Stop!  Thief!” followed her block after block.  Her heart hammered painfully and her lungs burned as she gasped for air.  Not until she was completely certain she was no longer being followed, did she slow to a walk.  On the way back to Sugarmann’s she struggled to calm herself, considering and discarding several possible explanations for what had happened.

Sounds intriguing, eh? Here’s the book blurb.

When pastry chef Jane Gray tries to sell a locket to an upscale Victorian boutique, she becomes the unlikely subject of a massive police hunt and fodder for London’s salacious tabloid press; secrets unravel, lies are exposed, and Jane finds the last thing she expected… love.Jane works tirelessly to provide a good life for her adopted daughter Pip, but her peaceful, predictable existence is shattered when the Duke of Rutledge demands custody of his niece. Charming and handsome, the duke’s younger brother Finn spends his leisure time between the sheets of London’s most beautiful, wanton women. The seasoned rake is perplexed by his growing attraction to demure, virtuous Jane… definitely not his usual type.If she were any other woman, he would simply make her his mistress. Instead, he is forced to consider more honorable means of achieving his desires. While eagerly plotting her submission, he fabricates excuses to spend time with her. It soon becomes evident there’s more to Jane than meets the eye, and Finn longs to possess the passionate, sensual woman hidden beneath her modest facade. When a scandal rag threatens to print false stories about the duke and his “love child,” Finn offers marriage under the guise of protection, but his true motives are less altruistic. Jane’s marriage draws the attention of a madman from her past. When his beloved wife is threatened, Finn enters London’s dangerous underworld in a heart-stopping race to save the woman and child who have become his whole world.

Wicked Wednesday--Seeking A Scribe

Wednesday again? My how time flies. So...well, here's my weekly post. Ready? Good.

Rules: First you grab our Wicked Wednesday pic. Then you grab a book. Turn to page 28. Take the first sentence. And then you post it in your site with a link back to WW28.  This week, I'm reading Seeking A Scribe: Enchanted Bookstore Legend One by Marsha A. Moore.

This is a Kindle book, so...sorry. I'm not sure about page numbers. It's 7% through so, page 28, maybe?

Lyra paused, unsure if she should ask how the store changed locations.
"And will the store be on Elm or Main, or somewhere else?" Silence followed. She held her breath.

Finally he cleared his throat. "I didn't realize you were having difficulties locating the store. Um, I don't know where it will be tomorrow. I realize how strange this must seem, but I'll help you understand when you're here. Truly, there are answers which will make sense. I apologize for the inconvenience. I really hope you'll come."

"Yes. Around nine," she stammered.

They exchanged goodbyes and Lyra stared at the phone as if she'd heard something impossible. He knew the store changed locations, but Tessa hadn't seemed to notice. Did it actually move? More than that, his voice echoed in her mind; she'd heard that exact cadence and tone before. She had to know more about that man....

If Seeking A Scribe: Enchanted Bookstore Legend One sounds interesting to you, it's available at: Amazon.

Patty G. Henderson’s Bag of Souls

The Brenda Strange Files: “The Bag of Souls”
An Unsolved Brenda Strange Case
by Patty G. Henderson
review copy acquired by personal purchase

Award-winning supernatural mystery author Patty G. Henderson revisits our favorite P.I. sending Brenda to Milport, Maine to see an old friend of hers. Dana and her partner Cheryl have a very odd tale to tell our dear Brenda. Paranormal activity, they say in their letter. It’s enough to entice Brenda to brave the late fall chill.

The women tell her they’ve found a bag hanging in their tree. When they removed it, they found it empty. Suddenly they began experiencing strange nightmares, they’ve heard noises they can’t explain. Dana even claims she fears something is trying to possess her. They fear something even worse is on the horizon.
Intrigued, Brenda agrees to stay with them for a night.

What happens during the night? You’ll have to read to find out. The Brenda Strange Files: “The Bag of Souls” An Unsolved Brenda Strange Case is a short little entry in the Brenda Strange Supernatural Mysteries—and one very creepy one! As usual, Patty G. Henderson has done an excellent job, evoking a sense of mystery into even the most mundane of situations. Her handling of the supernatural elements is one to be admired. If you’ve never read any Brenda Strange books before this just might be an excellent introduction, and for fans, it’s an intriguing little nibble. Do check it out. It’s available at Amazon for Kindle*.
