New releases

Okay, this is going to be short and sweet. A fangirl moment, if you will.....

Lisa Shearin's new book in the Raine series comes out today. Con and Conjure. Rob Thurman has a contest running for signed copies of her series. To enter, see his blog here. And he says something interesting that seems to go against most conventionlal wisdom "If you can, please help Lisa out and wait until the official date of release or that first week to buy. It helps authors tremendously with our rankings and sometimes, baby, rankings is all we have."

Interesting, I think because most of the writers I know/have read riffing on this topic claim pre-orders are more important.... just something I found interesting. Anyway, congrats, Lisa on the new release. :) This is a fantastic little series. It's available of course at Amazon and other places like that. :)

Paty Jager's new spirit

cover art by Nicola Martinez
Spirit of the Mountain
by Paty Jager
published by the Faery Rose line of The Wild Rose Press.
My review copy was provided by Ms. Jager herself *waves* (Thanks, Paty!)

Award-winning western Romance author Paty Jager has taken a turn into fantasy romance with her latest series. Set in her home state of Oregon in the mid-18th century, Spirit of the Mountain tells of daughter of the Nimiipuu chieftain, Wren, as she seeks and finds her weyekin (her guardian spirit), who appears to Wren as a white wolf. But the destiny her guide lays out for her isn’t one she expected or can necessarily stomach, for the Creator has dictated that she be married into an enemy tribe—the feared Blackleg tribe—who have in times past, wreaked much havoc on the peaceful Nimiipuu.

When on a stroll through her beloved mountain’s paths, Wren runs across a lovely white wolf, and thinking it her weyekin come to guide her again, begins pouring out her troubles to it, an impartial listener. But this is no guide, yet it is no ordinary wolf either. No, for it is actually the Spirit of the Mountain, Himiin. The form and duty he’s taken, though he’s proud to do it, has been given to him as a punishment by the Creator, for a death he caused a while back. So it shocks him that Wren would think to stay in his presence, let alone build a friendship with him.

Himiin’s brother and sister council and cajole him, but it’s no use. He feels he must warn her, that all might not be as it seems. He takes human form and the maiden falls as hard for him, as he has for her. Risking one passionate night, and possibly, both their futures. But how can he, a spirit, possibly build a life with Wren, a human, when his first duty is to the mountain and the Nimiipuu, and Wren’s first duty is to build peace between her tribe, and the Blackleg, through marriage to one of the schemers? And how will the Nimiipuu react when they find out the maiden they bargained for, well, isn’t quite as intact as they’d hoped? With an evil spirit on their side, will the Blackleg succeed in destroying the Nimiipuu as they wish?

You’ll have to read to find out.

Spirit of the Mountain (my reading copy of which came from Ms. Jager) gives readers a setting not usually seen in paranormal romance. Paty Jager put a lot of research into this book, and the narrative shows it in the lush settings and mannerisms of her characters. The lore and legends of her home state, and of these native peoples were particularly interesting and the spirits, an interesting bunch. The only drawback to the story was the odd words and names used, but if you’re a longtime reader of fantasy and science fiction, it shouldn’t be too hard to get the hang of. There’s also a pronunciation guide on Ms. Jager’s site if one should need it. Historical notes are also included that point out the history of animosity between these two tribes. Interesting stuff!

My grade for this one? I loved her voice, I loved Himinn and I always enjoy learning something new, so I have to give this one a

All in all, Ms. Jager builds a clever fantasy, here, that will be touched upon again in her forthcoming follow-up, Spirit of the Lake (due out in May from The Wild Rose Press). In the meantime, if you’d like to check out Spirit of the Mountain, it is available in Ebook and paperback from The Wild Rose Press, or Barnesandnoble.com.

A treasure of a lord and lady

cover art: Harlequin Enterprises, LTD
In the Laird's Bed
by Joanne Rock
Publisher: Harlequin
my reading copy provided by author Joanne Rock

In Harlequin Romance Author Joanne Rock’s latest Medieval title, In the Laird’s Bed, the author continues the story of Cristiana Domhnaill and Duncan the Brave. Five years ago, they were engaged, and split when Duncan’s brother Malcolm raped Cristiana’s sister, leaving her pregnant. Now, Duncan’s come back in search, not necessarily of a wife, but of gold. Cristiana suspects something’s amiss but due to the wicked storm in which he arrives, Christian charity won’t allow her to leave he and his men to suffer. So she opens the castle gates.

Good news for him, as it gives him a chance to find the legendary Viking treasure, bad news for Cristiana who has been hiding her sister’s five-year-old daughter within the Domhnaill walls. If he finds the girl, Cristiana is sure he’ll claim her in his brother’s name. Or at the very least he might try to claim the Domhnaill lands when he finds out her father has taken ill. She can’t have that.

But maybe Duncan’s not a complete dishonorable wretch, as it seems Duncan is falling for her again, and the feeling is mutual. She’s further put at ease by the fact that the two brothers aren’t on the best of terms. But what if Malcolm comes calling to claim what’s his? And will Edwina take her child back? If these things happen, and with a missing, fabled gold yet to find, who will Duncan side with: Cristiana, or Leah’s parents? Or will he eschew it all in the quest to win back Cristiana's heart?

You’ll have to read to find out. I have to admit, I have never failed to enjoy Joanne Rock's stories, and this one, In the Laird' Bed, has been no different. Ms. Rock’s characters are well drawn and the toddler Leah, was a charming little lass, her Medieval Scottish world is vivid, and the love scenes, of course, very hot, as is Joanne Rock’s trademark. Ms. Rock provided me with my reading copy (and thanks go out to her) but if you’d like a copy, you can either find it online at Harlequin’s website, or at barnesandnoble.com, or Amazon.

For me, yes, this was another one I loved so... my grade for it?

So if you love Medieval romances, do check it out. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the adventure!

If you'd like to learn more about the talented Ms. Joanne Rock, see her website here.

Friday 56 March 11

Based on the meme begun by Frida's Voice

So yes, I finally remembered to do this again. So here's a nifty quote.

From Joanne Rock's latest Harlequin Historical: In the Laird's Bed. (which I should be reviewing in its entirity very soon. :))

Pg. 56 "You have generously offered me a portion of some mysterious treasure at the end of your time with us." There were a few gasps of surprise and a few cynical laughs. "But in the spirit of the holiday, good sir, we ask that you share some hint of what you seek before then? Your hunt can be our entertainment."

This book's still available at amazon and Barnes and Noble
Enjoy. So what's your line this week? :)

Sorry I haven't posted recently folks. I have a review coming for the other blog, but I've been up to my ears in rewrites and just haven't had a chance to sit down and finish reading more than the shorts I get from epublishers now and then (thank God for them or I'd have no quick stuff to review). But I am still here, and have an Ellora's Cave review to write. It'll be up soon. Promise. In the meantime, I hope ya'll are doing well. Twimom227, did I see it was your birthday this past weekend??? Happy birthday!! (Guess what, I had one recently too. :)) Anyway, so stuff is coming, just...slowly. *hugs*
